Smack The Pony comedy troupe reunite over 20 YEARS after their Channel 4 series ended
Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips are reviving their comic sketches for the Edinburgh Fringe festival at the Gilded Balloon this summer.
The three comedians say they have lots of new ideas for skits and can't wait to reunite 24 years after the show came off air.
In a statement, the trio said: 'This is slightly surreal because it's 24 years since we finished. We're not old comedy, we now qualify as vintage, which is cool. Is it?'
'Because we always talk sketch ideas when we get together, on some level it's almost as if 'Smack the Pony' never really stopped - that it just kept going in some parallel universe.
'So it feels like Gilded Balloon is some kind of portal and we'll be popping into catch up with Series 26. We're very grateful to have this chance to hang out and take the p*** out of ourselves again - we've missed it!'
Their show, titled Back in the Saddle, will also feature broadcaster Kirsty Wark and will be a look back at the TV series with classic sketches revisited as well as their new material.
Smack The Pony - which was created by Victoria Pile, who also wrote surreal hospital sitcom Green Wing - ran on Channel 4 for three series from 1999 to 2002, and concluded with two specials broadcast over Christmas 2002 and New Year 2003.
Back in 2019, 'Two Doors Down' actress Doon, 62, revealed in an interview with The i newspaper that the trio had written a host of fresh sketches for a potential TV comeback but executives were not interested in bringing back 'Smack The Pony'.
She said: 'It's just been really difficult. We've pitched to a few places and it's not happening.
'I don't know whether it's [because it's] older women but it's not happening, which is, to me, astonishing. You think, how funny does it have to be? With the brand?'
Doon, Fiona, 60, and Sally, 54, previously reunited for a sketch for Red Nose Day in 2017. Chris McCausland is not returning for a second series of his talk show.
The Chris McCausland Show ran on ITV for 11 episodes and saw the stand-up comedian interview an array of celebrity guests, including Paul Whitehouse, Rob Beckett, Pixie Lott and more.
The comic's publicist has released a statement revealing that Chris, 47, made the decision to walk away from the programme to pursue other projects.
The 2024 Strictly Come Dancing winner has been inundated with work offers since becoming the first blind contestant to take home the Glitterball Trophy on the BBC One ballroom show.
The publicist told comedy news website Chortle: 'It was Chris who stepped away from this show.
It was a great experience but he's looking at other opportunities and there have been a lot of offers since 'Strictly'.'
Chris' next confirmed project is a BBC Two documentary which will focus on how technology has changed the way he has been able to continue his life after losing his sight by age 22 due to the genetic condition retinitis pigmentosa.
Seeing Into The Future will show Chris visiting Silicon Valley and investigating the latest technology helping people with blindness and severe sight issues.
Chris will also be releasing his memoir later this year. Announcing the book in January 2025, he said: 'I thought 'Strictly' was terrifying but my book has a release date and I haven't started writing it yet.

Harry Clark has broken silence on his Celebrity SAS axing with a stinging swipe at the Channel 4 show - after being booted off for 'lying and cheating'. The former British Army engineer, 24, was one of the famous faces taking part in the current series of the popular Channel 4 show. The course proved too much for the likes of S Club's Hannah Spearritt, TV personality Louie Spence, and Love Islanders Chloe Burrows and Tasha Ghouri. Another two have left, including the star - who won The Traitors in 2024 - who decided to do 10 burpees after being instructed by Billy Billingham and Jason Fox to do 20. Earlier this week it was revealed that Harry was booted from the course during episode four by furious staff after being caught cutting corners. Speaking to The Sun about his shocking departure, Harry said: 'Obviously I was so disheartened and so annoyed, but at the same time in the back of my head I was like, "but it's all right though because I've made that switch, I'm here to stay". 'I did exactly what I would do in the military. And that's what annoyed me so much because it was like I just hit that switch, but they'd kicked me off for it. 'So it was like, well then how can I prove to you now that I've changed? 'But then at the same time, when I look back on it and I've matured a lot now, they've probably done me a favour because I know that the next big stage was the interrogation phase.' The reality star went on to admit that he 'hated' the experience. 'I didn't like the experience that much, personally, it made me angry at them and myself that I wanted to get better,' he added. 'I felt like they didn't like me. I absolutely hated it while I was there. I just want people to be able to look at me now and think that is a completely different person.' Alongside Rebecca Loos, he was put in charge of a team for a gruelling race involving hauling a heavy dinghy. But as ex-Special Forces instructors Mark 'Billy' Billingham, Jason 'Foxy' Fox, Rudy Reyes, and Chris Oliver watched on, Harry appeared to avoid his share of the workload. His lack of effort left former football hardman Adebayo 'The Beast' Akinfenwa taking on the bulk of the weight – triggering a flare-up of his long-term knee injury. In pain and out of energy, Adebayo had no choice but to withdraw from the show entirely. Earlier in the show Jason Fox could be heard saying: 'If we get an indication that a recruit isn't pulling their weight, we will find out' so when back at camp, Harry was hauled in for a no-nonsense grilling. When confronted over failing to complete an earlier set of burpees, the staff accused him of lying straight to their faces. 'Are you f***ing trying to pull the wool over my eyes?!' Chris raged, before adding the star was treating him 'like an idiot'. Moments later, the ex army corporal was marched out in front of the rest of the recruits, and admitted that he had 'cut corners' and not completed all the burpees. Mark then shouted: 'No, you lied, you cut corners, I asked you three times about honesty and integrity, and what did you do?' Harry replied: 'I lied, staff.' His dismissal was immediate, with the DS ordering him to hand over his armband and leave, while his stunned co-stars looked on.

As Scott chatted to them about joining the show, Chris admitted: "My wife said 'when was the last time you put yourself out of comfort zone and put fear into you?' "It's daunting and great to test yourself, but I've got two left feet." Meanwhile La Voix - real name Chris Dennis - confessed that despite an extensive performing career, she is not known for being a dancing Queen. The first name to be announced for the 2025 series was Gladiators star Nitro - real name Harry Aikines Aryeetey - who took in the Christmas Special last year. He was quickly followed by Love Island winner Dani Dyer, Doctor Who star Alex Kingston and former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Representing soapland this year is EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, who plays Suki Panesar. The sixth celebrity to be confirmed was YouTube star George Clarke. The Sun was first to confirm La Voix had signed up for Strictly, with a show insider saying: "Producers already trialled having a drag artist on the show in the form of Tayce who actually won the Christmas Special last year with Kai Widdrington. 'La Voix is a bit more of an old-school entertainer who's a little closer to the traditional Strictly audience in terms of style and vibe. 'It's just another example of the Strictly execs constantly pushing at the boundaries and making changes that the show's audiences then have to adapt to.'
