Smack The Pony comedy troupe reunite over 20 YEARS after their Channel 4 series ended
The Smack The Pony comedy troupe are reuniting – more than 20 years after their comedy series ended on Channel 4.
Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips are reviving their comic sketches for the Edinburgh Fringe festival at the Gilded Balloon this summer.
The three comedians say they have lots of new ideas for skits and can't wait to reunite 24 years after the show came off air.
In a statement, the trio said: 'This is slightly surreal because it's 24 years since we finished. We're not old comedy, we now qualify as vintage, which is cool. Is it?'
'Because we always talk sketch ideas when we get together, on some level it's almost as if 'Smack the Pony' never really stopped - that it just kept going in some parallel universe.
'So it feels like Gilded Balloon is some kind of portal and we'll be popping into catch up with Series 26. We're very grateful to have this chance to hang out and take the p*** out of ourselves again - we've missed it!'
Their show, titled Back in the Saddle, will also feature broadcaster Kirsty Wark and will be a look back at the TV series with classic sketches revisited as well as their new material.
Smack The Pony - which was created by Victoria Pile, who also wrote surreal hospital sitcom Green Wing - ran on Channel 4 for three series from 1999 to 2002, and concluded with two specials broadcast over Christmas 2002 and New Year 2003.
Back in 2019, 'Two Doors Down' actress Doon, 62, revealed in an interview with The i newspaper that the trio had written a host of fresh sketches for a potential TV comeback but executives were not interested in bringing back 'Smack The Pony'.
She said: 'It's just been really difficult. We've pitched to a few places and it's not happening.
'I don't know whether it's [because it's] older women but it's not happening, which is, to me, astonishing. You think, how funny does it have to be? With the brand?'
Doon, Fiona, 60, and Sally, 54, previously reunited for a sketch for Red Nose Day in 2017. Chris McCausland is not returning for a second series of his talk show.
The Chris McCausland Show ran on ITV for 11 episodes and saw the stand-up comedian interview an array of celebrity guests, including Paul Whitehouse, Rob Beckett, Pixie Lott and more.
The comic's publicist has released a statement revealing that Chris, 47, made the decision to walk away from the programme to pursue other projects.
The 2024 Strictly Come Dancing winner has been inundated with work offers since becoming the first blind contestant to take home the Glitterball Trophy on the BBC One ballroom show.
The publicist told comedy news website Chortle: 'It was Chris who stepped away from this show.
It was a great experience but he's looking at other opportunities and there have been a lot of offers since 'Strictly'.'
Chris' next confirmed project is a BBC Two documentary which will focus on how technology has changed the way he has been able to continue his life after losing his sight by age 22 due to the genetic condition retinitis pigmentosa.
Seeing Into The Future will show Chris visiting Silicon Valley and investigating the latest technology helping people with blindness and severe sight issues.
Chris will also be releasing his memoir later this year. Announcing the book in January 2025, he said: 'I thought 'Strictly' was terrifying but my book has a release date and I haven't started writing it yet.

TV sports presenter Lee McKenzie has spoke out after being targeted by online trolls who made 'horrific' comments about her weight. McKenzie is a regularly presenter on both Channel 4 and the BBC and has worked on a variety of sports including F1, rugby and equestrian. The 47-year-old made an appearance for the broadcaster's coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix - in which Oscar Piastri claimed his fifth victory of the season - on Sunday. However, McKenzie's return was met by online trolls who commented on her physical appearance on the day and now the Channel 4 presenter has revealed that she had been struggling with 'health issues' in recent weeks. Taking to Facebook, she wrote: 'I've been thinking about whether I should post this but I will as it's not just about me, it's for all women and men too. 'Last month I went into hospital for an operation and I've been struggling with some health issues for a while now. 'As you see on here I'm a private person and I post about my work, not too much about life outside of work. I don't need or want attention or validation. 'But the comments about my appearance and weight at the Spanish Grand Prix have been horrific. I've had to turn off comments on my social media. It's worth saying they came from women and men alike. 'If you don't like what someone wears or looks like on television, feel free to think about it but why send it to them? Why contact someone to be deliberately rude? 'I'm a journalist and I'm good at my job and I'm furious that this affects me. But it does and there will be people out there getting similar abuse that are not as strong as me. Don't do it. Stirling family overcome setback on TV property show to find perfect home
A Stirling family overcame a house-hunting setback on a popular TV property show to find their dream home. Mum-and-daughter duo Lorraine and Emma starred on Location, Location, Location on Channel 4 on Wednesday night. Hosts Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp were tasked with finding the pair a home in the city on a budget of £275,000. The pair had been living with Lorraine's parents after she separated from her partner, but were looking for a place of their own. They identified Bridge of Allan as their ideal area to be close to family, but were open to trying other areas. Lorraine and Emma wanted something open-plan with a 'decent-sized' kitchen, a sociable space, good storage and transport links. They also hoped to find a three-bedroom home so that Meg, Lorraine's other daughter, could live with them when she returned from Australia. The house hunt started in Cambusbarron on the outskirts of the city. Phil showed the pair a three-bedroom terraced house that was on the market for offers over £234,000. Emma, a law student, said it was 'perfect' for two people, while Lorraine said it ticked a lot of boxes. However, they wanted more space and storage. Next, they viewed a nearby flat. This property, described as 'stunning' by the family, was under their budget with an asking price of offers over £189,000. It had more space, an open-plan kitchen and living room area and plenty of cupboard space. However, as it only had two bedrooms, Lorraine and Emma were unsure. Kirstie, meanwhile, picked out a three-bedroom period maisonette in the city centre for the duo to view. This was a project property and was on sale for offers over £195,000. However, Lorraine and Emma said they felt it needed too much work. The final property they viewed, a three-bedroom cottage in Torbrex, went down a storm with the pair. Located opposite The Inn at Torbrex, the property already had two offers by the time they viewed it. The duo decided to make an offer but were left 'disappointed' when their bid of £260,000 was not enough to secure the property, despite its asking price of offers over £245,000. However, Location, Location, Location revealed how just a few weeks later, Lorraine and Emma bought a three-bedroom townhouse on the outskirts of Stirling for £255,000. This left them with enough money to do some work on the house before they moved in. There was also a family reunion, as Meg returned from Australia to join them in their new home.
