Diddy's ex-assistant spills details on near-gunfight with Suge Knight

With three guns on his lap, Sean "Diddy" Combs ordered his driver to "motherfucking go" as they lit out for a Los Angeles diner — itching to confront longtime rival Suge Knight, Combs' ex-personal assistant testified Tuesday.
David James, Combs' then-personal assistant, described the dramatic 2008 ordeal — in which an early morning cheeseburger run nearly escalated the notorious East Coast-West Coast rap feud— while on the stand at Combs' federal sex-trafficking trial.
"It was the first time I realized my life was in danger," James told the Manhattan jury during his second day of testimony.
Knight, the Death Row Records cofounder, had been spotted at Mel's Drive-In diner some 20 minutes prior, James testified. It was James who drove Combs and one of the hip-hop tycoon's trusted security guards back to the diner, guns at the ready.
"I remember complete silence" during the 10-minute drive from Combs' Hollywood Hills home to the diner, James testified, adding, "I remember thinking there are three guns and three people in this car" should anything happen.
James, who said he served as Combs' personal assistant from 2007 to 2009, told the jury that by the time Combs got to the diner, Knight had already left.
"We didn't see any black Escalades or black SUVs" in the lot by the time they returned, James said, referring to the four cars he said Knight had been traveling with.
In the end, Combs just went home.
"We eventually drove back to his house in Hollywood Hills," James told the jury.
James said that Combs' human resources director tried to talk him into continuing to work for the rapper's Bad Boy companies. She offered him a job with the Sean John fashion line, or in marketing, he said.
"I told her no," he testified. "I just wanted to get out."
Last week, Combs' ex-girlfriend — star prosecution witness Cassie Ventura — described the Combs-Knight incident from her vantage point, back at the rapper's home.
On Tuesday, James described it from his own perspective, telling jurors what he heard and saw from behind the wheel.
It was 4 a.m., and Combs wanted cheeseburgers after a late-night recording session at his rented Hollywood Hills mansion.
James and one of Combs' security guards, Damian "D-Roc" Butler, were sent to Mel's, a popular all-night diner.
"I drove the staff truck, a silver Lincoln Navigator," James testified.
James had just pulled the Navigator into a parking spot at Mel's when Butler saw Knight at the wheel of an Escalade parked a few spots over.
"That's motherfucking Suge Knight!" Butler said, according to James.
James testified that the security guard walked up to Knight's car and said, "What's up? It's me D-Roc, Biggie's boy," referring to rapper Notorious B.I.G.
"Oh, what are you doing in my city?" Knight asked Butler, who replied, "I'm just here getting money, you know how it is," James testified.
"I know what it is," Knight responded.
The two men shook hands, and parted ways.
But as James and Butler were placing their order inside Mel's, they saw someone pass a gun to Knight — and saw four SUVs drive into position at different corners of the parking lot, James testified.
"We gotta' fucking go," Butler said, and they sped back to Combs' home, James testified.
Knight, who is serving a 28-year prison sentence in connection to a fatal 2015 hit-and-run, has recently commented on Combs' criminal case in interviews. An attorney for Knight did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Outside of Combs' home that early morning, James told jurors he saw Combs arguing with Ventura.
"She was telling him not to go. She was very upset," James said of Ventura.
Ventura said there was a 'freak-off' right before the incident
In her testimony last week about the situation, Ventura said that she had been involved in one of Combs' "freak off" sex performances at the time.
"I just remember we were kind of, like, just chilling at this point and D-Roc came in and he said that Suge was down at Mel's diner, which was just right down the hill," Ventura had testified. "And they quickly packed up and drove down there."
Ventura said she got upset.
"I was crying. I was screaming, like, please don't do anything stupid. I just was really nervous for them," Ventura testified. "I didn't know what it meant, what they were going to do."
Ventura testified that Combs and the other men put on black clothes, covered up their heads, went into a safe, and grabbed guns.
"And next thing I knew, they were in the SUV," she said.
They returned to the house in about half an hour, Ventura testified.
Prosecutors say that for two decades, Combs led a "criminal enterprise" that involved the sex trafficking of Ventura and another woman. Combs is accused of coercing those women, plus two additional women, into sex through a pattern of threats, manipulation, and violence.
Combs and his associates also committed other crimes, including forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, drug offenses, and obstruction of justice, prosecutors allege.
If convicted on the sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges against him, Combs could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Fact Check: Jim Carrey didn't testify at Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial

Claim: Comedian Jim Carrey testified at rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs' sex-trafficking trial in May 2025. Rating: A rumor that circulated online beginning in late May 2025 claimed actor Jim Carrey testified at rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs' sex-trafficking trial in New York. For example, on May 29, a manager of the Black Is Best YouTube channel posted a video titled (archived), "1 MINUTE AGO: Jim Carrey Testifies In Court On Day 12 Of Diddy Trial." The clip alleged that at a 2006 party Combs "forced" Carrey to strip naked and step into a bath filled with cold tomato sauce. The video received over 344,000 views as of this writing. The thumbnail image included a cartoon-like inset picture, much like an artificial-intelligence (AI) tool might generate, showing a shirtless Combs behind a shirtless Carrey, along with a caption suggesting sexual activity. On the same day, a manager of the WhatIsMyStarWorth YouTube channel also posted a video reading (archived), "1 MINUTE AGO: Jim Carrey 'I Took a Bath with Diddy to Get Famous' This Flipped the Courtroom..." According to the clip, Carrey allegedly testified, "I took a bath with 'Diddy' to get famous." That video earned over 206,000 views. The thumbnail image displayed a photo of Combs and Carrey wearing bathrobes and displayed the caption, "I felt helpless." Users on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived) and TikTok (archived) shared this rumor as well. However, both YouTube videos, as well as other YouTube clips about the rumor, featured text descriptions with a disclaimer about fictional content. That disclaimer, only visible upon clicking "more" to expand the description to its full length, read, "Disclaimer: This content is fictional and intended for entertainment purposes only. No verified court evidence or official statements confirm these claims." Also, searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo found no news media outlets reporting any news of Carrey as a witness testifying at Combs' trial. As a result, we've rated the claim false. Snopes contacted a representative for Carrey to ask for comment about the matter and will update this story if we receive more information. The two aforementioned YouTube creators, as well as others, promoted false information about Combs' background and trial. They continued a long line of videos featuring AI-generated editing, scripting and voice narration. The clips included authentic photos alongside fabricated rumors about celebrities' involvement with Combs, seemingly all for YouTube advertising revenue. Combs faces charges including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution, all centered on so-called "freak-off" parties — alleged sexual marathons involving drug use and coercion. Combs pleaded not guilty; if convicted, he faces a minimum prison sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison. Bill Maher acknowledges Diddy is violent — but minimizes his victim's abuse

'Real Time' host Bill Maher's comments about Sean 'Diddy' Combs' federal sex trafficking trial essentially blame his most well-known victim for her abuse. Speaking of Cassandra 'Cassie' Ventura, an artist who was signed to Combs' label and was his on-again, off-again girlfriend for 11 years, Maher said on his show Friday that 'the rule should be: if you're being abused, you gotta leave right away.' Ventura testified last month that the 55-year-old founder of Bad Boy Entertainment forced her to help organize and participate in sordid drug-fueled sex parties that he called 'freak offs' and left her with black eyes and busted lips. She was one of the first witnesses prosecutors called as they attempt to prove to a jury that Combs is guilty of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution. As shocking and as disgusting as Maher's comment is, he isn't the only prominent man who's made it his duty — at some point between her November 2023 lawsuit against Combs and now — to try to pick apart her story. Hotel surveillance video published by CNN in 2024 that prompted Combs to admit he'd abused Ventura should have ended the skepticism that followed her November 2023 lawsuit that included allegations of such abuse. But some skeptics simply absorbed that evidence and kept on with comments suggesting prosecutors are overcharging Combs. After Ventura testified, DJ Vlad said on X that 'Diddy is definitely guilty of the domestic violence part. But Cassie was a willing participant in a lot of the other things they're charging him with and giving her immunity over.' Replying to DJ Vlad, the rapper Boosie replied, 'SHE JUST AS GUILTY SHE ENJOYED IT.' Ventura, who signed a contract with Bad Boy Records when she was 19, said she was 22 and Combs was 39 when he first proposed 'freak offs' to her. Despite knowing he had a girlfriend, she testified she initially participated in his sexual requests to make him happy. 'Using Cassie's youth as a blanket excuse for the choices she made during her decade-long relationship with Diddy is problematic because it removes the necessary element of accountability,' the rapper Willie D wrote in a Facebook post. He described Ventura as a 'savvy home-wrecking opportunist' and added, 'Yes, Diddy was abusive and should have been punished for it, but let's not pretend Cassie didn't cash in after every black eye… with designer bags and tropical getaways.' Taken together, the comments suggest that Ventura — while being abused — still had full agency and could give her full consent. In February 2024, after Combs had given Ventura money to settle her lawsuit — but before the hotel surveillance tape had been released or federal investigators had searched Combs' homes — retired boxer Floyd Mayweather said on a podcast: 'My take on it is: it's not my business. I don't think it's right at all and I don't condone it. Even if that happened to my daughter, I would be hurt but that's a choice that my daughter made.' Former football player Ryan Clark, a host of that podcast, responded correctly when he said, 'we have to be very careful' and said that when women make allegations like Ventura's, 'if those things are true, that wasn't a decision they made; that's something that was done to them.' In spelling out his new rule that abused women should leave immediately, Maher said, 'Now, I completely understand why, in the past, women often did not do that.' But he says things have changed since the #METOO movement, conveniently ignoring that Ventura's relationship with Combs preceded that movement. That said, the reason that abuse often kept women trapped in relationships then is the reason abuse often keeps women trapped in relationships now. Besides, multiple people have given testimony in Combs' trial that suggests fear of crossing him. 'At some point I felt I didn't have much of a choice, I didn't know what 'No' could turn into.' Furthermore, she testified that Combs threatened to release video of those encounters to publicly humiliate her. Capricorn Clark, a former aide to Combs who testified that Combs once threatened to kill her, said she saw Combs kick Ventura at '100% full force.' A former personal assistant of Combs' identified only by the pseudonym 'Mia' not only testified that Combs' regularly attacked Ventura, but she also testified that he sexually assaulted her and said that if either she or Ventura did something without his permission, the responses could be 'unpredictable and terrifying.' 'There's nothing here,' Ray J told Piers Morgan in a May 27 interview. 'I think they made their point. Whatever they were trying to make, your point is made. Now let Diddy out. Free Diddy!' It is disappointing that as evidence of Combs' mistreatment of Ventura has been mounting that so many men with platforms have attempted to minimize the abuse or the effects of the abuse. But it's not surprising given that we continue to see a similar support for the perpetrator and indifference for the victim after the rapper Tory Lanez shot fellow rapper Meghan Thee Stallion in the foot and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Last month, for example, after the rapper whose legal name is Daystar Peterson was stabbed in prison, Drake shared a petition calling on California Gov. Gavin Newsom to free him. These arguments for Tory Lanez over Megan Thee Stallion and for Diddy over Cassie disregard women's bodily autonomy and suggest that physical violence inflicted upon women isn't so serious that it should lead to men being punished. Some of Combs' defenders may believe themselves to be merely supporting someone they know through their hardships, but support comes with holding people accountable for their wrongdoing. 'Diddy is a bad dude — really bad,' Maher said before describing him as 'a violent sick f---' who deserves to be locked up. Maher is all about new rules. But a new one for him and other men expressing hurtful misogyny should be that if you acknowledge that a man is sick and violent, you don't get to question the choices victims under his control made. Fact Check: Adam Sandler didn't testify against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, honestly

Claim: Actor Adam Sandler testified against Sean 'Diddy' Combs on or around May 30, 2025, during the rapper's sex-trafficking trial in New York City. Rating: In late May 2025, a claim (archived) circulated online that actor Adam Sandler testified against Sean "Diddy" Combs on or around May 30, 2025, during the rapper's sex-trafficking trial in New York City. One YouTube video, titled "1 MINUTE AGO: Adam Sandler Testifies In Court On Day 14 Of Diddy Trial," had more than 374,000 views at the time of this writing. The rumor also appeared on Facebook (archived), X (archived) and TikTok (archived) and Snopes readers searched our site to find out if it was true. However, the claim that Sandler testified against Combs in the music mogul's criminal trial was false. Court reports from entertainment and news outlets on May 30 — day 13 of the trial, when video narrations in the above posts said Sandler testified — made no mention of the actor. Sandler also did not feature in Getty Images photos or court sketches on this date. Day 14 of the trial, when some video titles and descriptions said the testimony took place, was on June 2, 2025, several days after the videos were published. A Google search also produced no evidence that Sandler testified at the trial. Snopes reached out to representatives for Sandler to ask if the actor had or would testify in the trial against Combs. We await their reply. The claim spread via numerous (archived) YouTube videos labeled "Altered or synthetic content." The videos also included disclaimers that they were for "entertainment and educational purposes only," both indicators that the content was fictional. One video (archived) that did not include the "altered or synthetic content" label (but did include the "entertainment and educational purposes only" disclaimer) falsely credited its claims to Inner City Press, an outlet that covers the Southern District Court of New York where Combs' trial was being held. This is not the first time we have debunked a claim falsely attributed to Inner City Press. We previously fact-checked its involvement in false reports that Usher had testified at Combs' trial. Combs faces multiple charges that include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Snopes has also previously investigated whether Wendy Williams and Samuel L. Jackson testified at the rapper's ongoing trial. 7 Diddy Trial Photos & High Res Pictures - Getty Images.
