'Bring Back Rohit And Kohli': Legends Asked To Make Retirement U-Turns After Record Defeat
Last Updated:
Indian team is being criticised for their listless show in Leeds losing a Test despite scoring five centuries in the contest.
India's new era after the retirement of senior cricketers has started with a defeat to England in Leeds. A listless show from the bowlers saw the Shubman Gill-captained India fail to defend 371 at Headingley to concede a 0-1 lead to England in their five-match Test series on Tuesday.
The defeat will rankle he visitors for some time given they ended up conceding the advantage several times to England starting from their batting collapse in the first innings. They were bowled out for 471 after being 430/3 at one stage in the first dig. Similar collapse followed in the second innings as they slumped to 364-all out from 333/3.
Their fears over the bowlers barring Jasprit Bumrah not making an impact came true as well. Bumrah overcame some shoddy fielding to pick up a five-wicket haul in the first innings and somehow managed to get India a slim six-run lead despite little to no support from his fellow pacers.
And then there was the small matter of as many as eight catches being dropped by Indian fielders during the course of the Test with Yashasvi Jaiswal guilty of grassing half of them.
And this right after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Users on social media were severe in their criticism of the performance with few even wondering if it's not too late to ask Rohit and Kohli to come out of Test retirements.
This is why having seniors in the team is a must because youngsters will listen to players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, or even Ajinkya Rahane, transition doesnt mean an entirely new team pic.twitter.com/Xo4Dc67pcw — Shah (@Iamshah0000) June 24, 2025

IND vs ENG: 'It is going to sting' — Rishabh Pant reacts after heartbreaking loss at Headingley
Rishabh Pant of India (Photo by) Even as England pulled off a remarkable five-wicket win in the opening Test at Headingley, India's Rishabh Pant walked away with a record that will go down in history. In a bittersweet moment, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, an extraordinary feat that stood out in an otherwise forgettable outing for India. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant posted on X after the loss: "It is going to sting us for a while but we BELIEVE in bouncing back stronger." The message reflected both the pain and the resolve within the Indian camp after letting a golden opportunity slip away. Pant was India's heartbeat with the bat throughout the match. After scoring a fluent 134 in the first innings, the southpaw returned on Day 4 under immense pressure and counterattacked his way to 118 in the second, bringing up his second century of the match in just 130 balls. With this, he entered an elite club of Indian batters—Gavaskar, Dravid, Kohli, among others who've notched tons in both innings of a Test. More impressively, Pant became only the second wicketkeeper in Test historyafter Zimbabwe's Andy Flower in 2001—to achieve this feat. India Outplayed at Headingley | England Go 1-0 Up in the Series | IND vs ENG 1st Test His attacking style was once again on full display, particularly against young spinner Shoaib Bashir, whom Pant swept, reverse-swept, and charged at with unflinching intent. He also surpassed MS Dhoni to become the highest run-scoring Indian wicketkeeper in Tests on English soil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India had posted 471 and 364, and set England a daunting target of 371. But Ben Duckett 's explosive 149, Root's calm 53*, and a late flourish from Jamie Smith proved too much. Despite the heartbreak, Pant's heroics gave India a fighting chance and reminded the world of his rising stature in the Test arena. Now with four Tests to go, India will look to bounce back, and if Pant's words and form are any indication, they'll do it with fire. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
