Watch: Lionel Messi's assist splits defence wide open and leads to a goal… for the opposition team

Indian Express08-07-2025
Just when you thought that even Lionel Messi mush have his limitations, he manages to surprise you. The latest piece of trickery from the puny magician with a permanent spell on the football was providing an assist that was so good that stunned defenders could only stand and gawk as the striker slotted the ball into goal. It was a piece of football's skill that left even Inter Miami fans stunned into silence.
Why?
Because Messi had ended up assisting the opposition team's striker!
The incident happened in the second minute of the game, where Messi came rushing back to the midfield to help out his defence. But he mis-controlled the pass to him with his famed left foot. Then, to make matters worse, he tried to pass the ball to another teammate near the Inter Miami box and ended up passing to Montreal's Prince Owusu, who converted to help the team lead 1-0 over Inter Miami just two minutes into the game. What was strange was that Messi was under no real pressure when he passed the ball to Owusu. In fact, the closest player to Messi at that point was his own teammate.
The Argentine legend held his head in his hands as Montreal players celebrated.
Prince Owusu gives @cfmontreal the early lead over Miami! 😮

But just in case fans were starting to think that Messi is human after all, he came roaring back into the game, scoring two goals, and assisting another one (this time to his own teammate) to help Inter Miami defeat CF Montreal 4-1 on Saturday night.
He helped Tadeo Allende score Inter Miami's equaliser in the 33rd minute. Then, seven minutes later the legend got on the scoresheet himself. Luis Suárez headed a long ball from Tomás Avilés into Messi's path. The Argentine star dribbled into the box and coolly finished with his left foot to help Inter Miami take a 2-1 lead into the 40th minute.
Soon enough, Telasco Segovia made it 3-1 for Inter Miami. Then it was Messi who tied up the game with a neat bow on top in the 62nd minute as he weaved through a pack of Montreal defenders to score his 12th goal of the season from 14 MSL games.

Ivan Demidov at the center of Canadiens' lineup debate ahead of 2025 season

Demidov committed, but center role not likely in 2025 (Image via: Getty Images) The Montreal Canadiens' second-line center situation has become one of the hottest topics of the 2025 NHL offseason. With questions swirling around who will take on the crucial role behind Nick Suzuki, fans and analysts alike are looking to rookie sensation Ivan Demidov, but is he ready for that responsibility? Is Ivan Demidov Montreal's next center or still a long-term project? Ever since the Canadiens selected Ivan Demidov in the 2024 NHL Draft, speculation has followed about where he fits into the team's lineup. Though he's primarily played as a winger, some have floated the idea of moving him to center to address the team's depth concerns. While names like Kirby Dach and Zach Bolduc remain in the mix, the potential of Demidov playing center continues to dominate Habs conversations. However, despite internet chatter and loosely reported claims, Demidov has never dismissed the idea of playing center. According to Marco D'Amico of the young Russian said he's open to the position if the coaches believe he can handle it. He's done it at the junior level, but never in the KHL, and he admits that face-offs remain a weak spot. Ivan Demidov's training commitment shines, but center role in 2025 remains unlikely Importantly, Demidov has shown no signs of resistance or attitude issues. He's doing the opposite. Instead of spending his summer overseas or enjoying a break, Demidov has committed to training in Montreal, putting in serious work at the Canadiens' Brossard training facility and staying sharp in the Living Sisu LSHL summer league. His humility and hard work ethic make him a strong candidate for long-term success, but a move to center in the 2025 NHL season feels premature. He's still learning the North American game, and Montreal doesn't appear ready to gamble by rushing his development at such a demanding position. Canadiens' center depth leaves door open for surprises in 2025 While Kirby Dach's health, Zach Bolduc's readiness, or even a surprise move by GM Kent Hughes could change the outlook, Ivan Demidov will play where the team needs him most, but center may not be that spot just yet. Definitely. Cristiano will want more big players over there… He's a competitor and he wants to win, he hasn't won as much as he would like. It'd be great to see internal competition.' Saha emphasized that Messi's arrival would elevate the league's status and intensify its competitiveness, a landscape Ronaldo relishes. Saudi's roadmap for football Saudi Arabia's growing ambition in global football was spotlighted by Ronaldo's signing and the Club World Cup. Montreal Canadiens' second-line center hunt may extend into 2026 free agency

Montreal Canadiens (via Getty Images) As the summer passes, it's looking more and more probable the Montreal Canadiens will start the 2025–26 season with Kirby Dach as their second-line center. While there remains some ambiguity with regards to his consistency and health, Dach is still the fallback option, not because he's the optimum choice, but because no one else has proven to be an upgrade. Will Montreal search for second-line center to move to free agency in 2026? John Tavares remained true to Toronto. Jonathan Toews returned home sentimentally to Winnipeg. Mikael Granlund went west to Anaheim, and Pius Suter went to St. Louis. Even Christian Dvorak, who wasn't kept by Montreal, was able to secure an unexpected $5.4 million AAV deal with the Philadelphia Flyers. Peeking ahead, the 2026 UFA class at center could be deep—at least on paper. Connor McDavid , Jack Eichel, and Anze Kopitar top the list. Can one of them end up in Montreal? Connor McDavid departing the Edmonton Oilers seems unlikely unless the team experiences a catastrophic collapse. The Search for a 2nd Line Center.. Even with consecutive Cup Final losses, allowing the world's best player to leave would be franchise-defining. Eichel is more interesting. If Vegas disappoints and McDavid becomes an option, the Golden Knights could retool. Martin Necas, Logan Cooley, Leo Carlsson, and even Connor Bedard might theoretically be available—if not signed. But let's be real: offer sheets are toxic in the NHL today. Not many GMs are eager for the heat that accompanies them, and Montreal's Kent Hughes has demonstrated no willingness to do it. That leaves trades—and those aren't easy. It's not flashy, and it sure as heck won't placate a fanbase famished for progress. But the reality is, there's no magic pill for a second-line center. Until Hage, Beck, or someone else in-house takes the leap—or the 2026 market produces an unexpected card—the Dach Plan is the most viable option on the table. It's a risk, but it may be the only one remaining to play—at the moment. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here.
