Kenya's flower exports poised to rise in 2025 amid growing demand
NAIROBI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's flower exports are forecast to rise to 110 billion Kenyan shillings (about 851 million U.S. dollars) in 2025, up from 835 million dollars recorded in 2024, a trade lobby said Wednesday. Clement Tulezi, chief executive officer of the Kenya Flower Council, told Xinhua in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that performance exceeded expectations during the recent Valentine's Day season, which is traditionally a peak period for flower sales. "We are experiencing steady demand for flowers from all key markets," Tulezi said on the sidelines of the International Floriculture Trade Expo 2025. The three-day event brought together senior government officials, flower growers and buyers, cargo firms, and exhibitors from 83 countries to discuss ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the global floriculture industry. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the flower sector is one of the country's leading sources of foreign exchange earnings, alongside diaspora remittances, tourism, tea, and coffee. Tulezi said that another driver of rising export earnings is the expansion of land dedicated to flower farming. The country currently exports over 100 varieties of flowers, with roses continuing to dominate, accounting for more than 60 percent of all floriculture exports. He said that the European Union, Britain, and the United Arab Emirates remain key markets for Kenya, while Japan, China, and Malaysia are emerging destinations.

Ground beef sold at Whole Foods may be tainted with E. coli: USDA
NEW YORK, June 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. agriculture officials are warning that ground beef sold at Whole Foods markets nationwide may be contaminated with potentially dangerous E. coli bacteria, reported The Associated Press on Wednesday. Officials issued a public health alert for 1-pound, vacuum-packed packages of Organic Rancher beef, produced on May 22 and May 23, by NPC Processing Inc., of Shelburne, Vermont. The products have use-by dates of June 19 and June 20. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) did not request a recall because the products are no longer available for purchase. However, they may still be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. The meat was produced in Australia or Uruguay and processed in the United States. It was sent to distributors in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland and then to Whole Foods stores nationwide. The problem was discovered when company officials notified FSIS that they had shipped beef products that tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness, according to the report.

MOSCOW, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese brands ranked among the top five best-selling passenger cars in Russia in May 2025, according to a report released on Wednesday by Russian analytical agency Autostat. Total passenger car sales in Russia fell to 91,218 in May, down 28.3 percent in comparison to the previous year, according to the agency. While the domestic automaker Lada held its top position with 25,552 cars sold, Chinese brands maintained their strong presence. The report shows that Haval remained the top-selling Chinese brand in Russia in May 2025, accounting for around 12 percent of all new passenger car sales with 10,623 units sold, followed by Chery with 9,780 units, Geely with 6,299 units and Chang'an with 5,639 cars.
