General Motors recalls over 62,000 vehicles. See impacted models.

USA Today8 hours ago

General Motors has recalled over 62,000 vehicles due to a break pressure issue that could lead to fires.
Impacted vehicles include the 2019 to 2024 Chevrolet Silverado models in 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD, General Motors told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in a memo on June 25
The recall includes 62,468 vehicles altogether, the company said.
Here's what we know about the issue and what General Motors is doing to fix it.
What's the issue with the vehicles?
According to General Motors, the brake pressure sensor assembly on the recalled vehicles may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch, causing a short circuit. An electrical short in the brake pressure switch can overheat the circuit, increasing the risk of a fire while consumers are driving or parked.

Which vehicles have been impacted?
Most of the impacted vehicles are 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 5500 HD trucks made between January 20, 2023 and March 19, 2024. General Motors said about 10,097 of them run the risk of malfunctioning, per manufacturing records.
'Vehicles prior to 2019 model year use a different design and are not affected by this recall,' the company said. '2024 model year vehicles that were produced with a brake switch wire harness that includes a silicone sealant are not affected by this recall.'
Altogether, the recall includes vehicles listed as:
What should drivers do if they have the impacted vehicles?
Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harnesses for free, General Motors said.
The company notified dealers on June 12. General Motors plans to mail letters to owners by July 28. Once the repair is available, the company will mail a second round of letters.
Until the recall repair is complete, owners should park outside and away from buildings.
Who can drivers call for help or information?
Drivers can contact:
The company said these vehicles were previously repaired under recall no. 23V266 and need to undergo the new repair.

Automakers want US to move faster on self-driving car rules

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Major automakers want Congress and the Trump administration to move faster to make it easier to deploy autonomous vehicles without human controls as new robotaxi tests expand. Congress has been divided for years about whether to pass legislation to address deployment hurdles, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not moved quickly to rewrite safety rules or allow exemptions for up to 2,500 vehicles without human controls annually and ease other hurdles. "The auto industry wants, it needs a functioning and effective auto safety regulator. We don't have that today," said Alliance for Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella at a U.S. House of Representatives hearing on Thursday. "The agency isn't nimble. Rulemakings take too long if they come at all." Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association Director Jeff Farrah urged Congress to pass long-stalled nationwide legislation to allow the United States to globally lead on AVs as China moves aggressively in the field. "Right now we are fighting with one hand tied behind our back," Farrah said. Companies have pushed for more action for years. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in April that a new department framework to boost autonomous vehicles would help U.S. automakers compete with Chinese rivals. Earlier this month, NHTSA said it would speed reviews of requests from automakers to deploy self-driving vehicles without required human controls like steering wheels, brake pedals or mirrors. Representative Frank Pallone of New Jersey, a Democrat, cited reports showing NHTSA has lost as much as 35% of its expert staff this year through layoffs and other exits, which puts the ability of the agency to function at risk. NHTSA said "significantly fewer people have left" than Pallone suggested and that it remains "staffed to continue to conduct all safety- and mission-critical work" and is boosting its Office of Autonomous Safety. Meanwhile, U.S. traffic deaths remain sharply above pre-COVID levels. Despite falling 3.8% in 2024 to 39,345, they are still significantly higher than the 36,355 killed in 2019 and double the average rate of other high-income countries. "NHTSA is failing to meet the moment," Insurance Institute for Highway Safety President David Harkey told lawmakers. "In recent years, it has approached its job with a lack of urgency, using flawed methodologies that underestimate the safety benefits of obviously beneficial interventions," he said. NHTSA routinely fails to write regulations even when directed by Congress and has often gone years without a Senate-confirmed leader. BMW model suspected of starting Jacksonville International Airport fire might have been recalled

Action News Jax is working to find out if the BMW at the center of a massive fire at Jacksonville International Airport in May was part of a nationwide recall. Below is a picture of the burned-out car being removed from the garage on Tuesday. In late 2024, BMW recalled nearly 271,000 of its cars and SUVs due to a fire risk posed by a faulty water pump. 'They're having trouble with the connector, water is getting into it and other liquids. And the water pump on these particular BMWs is driven by an electric motor, so it causes it to short out. And could cause it to catch fire,' Tony Mossuto, owner of Everything Automotive, said. The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration said the recall is for 2012-2018 models like the 3 and 5 series, and the X3 and X5. Action News Jax confirmed with the Jacksonville Aviation Authority that the BMW alleged to have started the fire is an X3. RELATED: 1 month since Jacksonville International Airport parking garage fire, people are still without cars Action News Jax's Madison Foglio called the ATF, JAA, and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, and asked them what model year the BMW was and if they knew the cause of the fire. No one could answer those questions. Mossouto has been working with cars since 1983. He said that a fire that this issue can cause can have dire consequences. 'If it's an older car, or older model they could have oil leaks and all, it could be a fire that totally takes out the entire car. I mean it can get pretty big,' Mossouto said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Again we don't know if that car was recalled or what caused the fire. But Mossouto said that if you suspect anything wrong with your car, to get it checked out immediately. JAA sent Action News Jax this statement about the parking garage reconstruction today: 'JAA is extremely thankful and fortunate to get to this phase, without death or injury, of the significant fire that occurred in JAX's hourly garage on May 16th. Because of the rapid response efforts of JFRD, JSO, and JAA's entire staff, a possible larger tragedy was averted. After extensive shoring was done to stabilize the structure, the last car was removed on June 24th, allowing demolition of the structurally compromised area to start, which will take approximately six weeks.' [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] JAA also told Action News Jax that right now, there are 217 parking spaces unavailable because of the fire. Michael Stewart is the Vice President of External Affairs for the JAA. He said the airport has recently expanded its parking offerings. 'We were able to actually bring on some other parking spaces in our economy lots and expanded valet,' Stewart said. 'We have sufficient parking and we are inviting customers to come back and park at JAA or JAX facilities at the airport because we have about the same capacity as what we had before. We lost almost 500 spaces as a result of closing that section of the hourly garage. So come on back and park at Jacksonville International Airport when you travel!' No word yet on when demolition of the impacted areas of the South Hourly Parking Garage is scheduled to begin. This 2025 Corvette ZR1 Made 1028 HP At the Rear Wheels in a Dyno Test — And It's Stock

With an official output of 1068 horsepower and a top speed of over 230 miles per hour, the new C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is a truly ridiculous machine on paper. (And, as we found during our first drive test, a surprisingly easy-to-drive one in practice.) A recent dyno test conducted by the YouTube channel Paragon Performance, however, suggests that the car's real-world numbers may be even more absurd than what General Motors claims. In a dyno test streamed live on Tuesday, the channel found that the C8 ZR1 produced an astounding 1028 hp and 840 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Since the car is officially rated for 1064 hp and 838 lb-ft of torque, that number either suggests an incredibly efficient drivetrain or a substantially underrated engine. As number would suggest just a 3% drivetrain power loss, and the oft-quoted 15% power loss through the drivetrain would make the actual power output 1193 hp, the truth is likely somewhere in between. Paragon Performance says it has two new ZR1s, and plans to run additional tests over the next week before releasing another video. That should account for some of the possible variances in dyno testing, which could eventually show that this was just a particularly good day to run the Corvette. Nevertheless, reaching 1038 hp at the wheels is a staggering achievement for any road car. If the official rating of 1064 hp is actually a conservative estimate, it would mirror the first estimates of the car's top speed. GM first announced that the ZR1 could reach a top speed of "comfortably over 215 mph" when the car debuted. Four months later, the brand revealed that it had tested the car's V-max and found that it could actually reach 234 mph. No matter how powerful the ZR1 actually is at the crank, it is certainly the most powerful production Corvette ever ‚ but it will not hold that record for long, because the hybrid ZR1X is following closely behind with an additional 186 hp from an electric motor on the front axle. Because both ZR1 variants use the same turbocharged engine, this dyno run suggests great things for that car. If the ZR1 is really more powerful than GM's official numbers, the ZR1X should be, too.
