At Jiwhala Club 60+, they light up twilight years
2
Nagpur: Ageing with health issues, lack of emotional support, and a sense of loneliness can take a serious mental health toll on senior citizens, especially those whose children live away.
If no timely intervention or care is provided, some of such senior citizens tend to see the futility of carrying on with life. That seems to be the reason, as initial reports suggest, behind the alleged suicide pact of an 80-year-old homeopathy doctor and his 70-year-old wife in the city recently. While the doctor, unfortunately, couldn't survive, his wife is fighting for life.
The elderly couple lived alone, and their suicide notes spoke of health struggles, loneliness, and unfulfilled dreams.
While the tragedy points to the growing isolation faced by senior citizens, it also underlines the urgent need for emotional support systems for the elderly — especially those whose children live away.
At such a time, Jiwhala Club 60+, a unique support group in Nagpur started in 2019 by a group of volunteers led by Avinash Sangwai, is quietly offering a lifeline to many senior citizens. Jiwhala, meaning affection, is more than just a club.

It is an emotional safety net for elders whose children are settled outside Nagpur or even abroad.
"We realised that though parents proudly send their children away for education and career, later in life, a deep void takes over. Jiwhala Club was born out of this very need — to fill that emotional gap and create joyful moments in their golden years," says Sangwai, the guiding force behind Jiwhala.
Jiwhala Club 60+ has just completed six meaningful years.
What began with a simple idea — to bring together senior citizens for birthdays and lunch outings — has now evolved into a thriving emotional community. The club organises monthly birthday celebrations complete with a homely satvik meal, a sweet dish, music, and long, heartfelt conversations.
"During these gatherings, we talk about childhood memories, old workplaces, family anecdotes, and more. The idea is to reconnect with the joy of living," said Vilas Deshpande.
"It also becomes a trusted place where people open up about their worries, health issues, and even their loneliness. The healing happens quietly," he added.
Over the years, Jiwhala has built a reliable support system. From emotional management to helping with daily challenges, the group is always ready to step in. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they took risks to support elderly members with food, medicines, and emotional reassurance.
In fact, Jiwhala has reached out beyond its circle too. In the last six years, it has financially supported around 30 single-parent girls by collecting donations from the community. It has also honoured unsung social workers and brought them to the public spotlight, even getting them TEDx speaking opportunities.
"Happiness is our goal, and we are increasing the happiness index of our elders, one step at a time," added Narendra Kulkarni, one of the founder members.
The club has become a second family for many. As members age, their bond with Jiwhala grows stronger. Some of them have said they wait eagerly for the club's get-togethers — it gives them something to look forward to, something to dress up for, and someone to talk to without hesitation. Each birthday celebration is not just about cutting a cake — it's about feeling seen, loved, and celebrated.
Dr Gangadharrao Harne's death by suicide is a wake-up call.
Jiwhala Club 60+ shows that small gestures, consistent care, and community support can go a long way in preventing such tragedies.
"Let's not just extend the lifespan of our seniors, but enhance the joy in those years," said Sangwai.

Illegal organ trade: Govt cancels transplant licences of two hospitals
Chennai: State govt has directed the directorate of medical and rural services to cancel transplant licences of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Trichy for their involvement in the illegal sale of organs. The hospitals that submitted "forged documents" for govt approval will be banned from conducting these surgeries, and govt will lodge a police complaint against two brokers involved in the organ trade and begin streamlining live-unrelated organ transplant surgeries, a release from the health department said. The decisions were made based on the recommendation of the govt-appointed committee to investigate irregularities in organ transplants, following complaints from Namakkal. The committee, led by Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project Project Director Dr S Vineeth, in its report submitted to the govt, confirmed these hospitals carried out illegal organ transplantations by submitting forged documents to the appropriate authority, procuring organs through brokers from donors who are related to the patient, and "misusing legal technicalities"—gross violations of the Transplant of Human Organs Act, 1994. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is addicted. As per organ transplant rules, hospitals must seek permission from authority if donors are not blood relatives — parents, siblings, or spouses. Investigations showed some documents submitted by the hospitals were forged by the transplant coordinators working at the hospital, the release said. The transplant surgeries were permitted based on these documents, and transplants were completed, it said. On Sunday, the govt said police complaints will be filed against two brokers—Anandan and Stanley Mohan—who were involved in the sale of organs, along with details of bank transactions, phone records, and other details collected by the inquiry committee. After finding the records of the district authorisation committee were "carelessly prepared," the investigating team has recommended standard operating procedures to streamline the work of district-level accrediting committees. The govt said it will constitute new state-level committees, reconstitute the four district-level committees and issue detailed SoPs. 7-minutes of this workout has proven to be 40% more powerful than High Intensity Interval Training for body transformation
When it comes to fast, efficient workouts, everyone's mind goes to High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) as the holy grail. But new findings are replacing that thought. Researchers now propose that a little-known alternative, Sprint Interval Training (SIT), may be even more potent with greater fat loss, greater muscle gain, and takes much less time. It sounds too good to be true. But the statistics prove it. A peer-reviewed article published in Run Repeat, titled 'Sprint Interval Training: Burn 40% More Fat Than HIIT in 60% Less Time,' concludes that, Sprint Interval Training (SIT) is significantly more effective than HIIT or traditional cardio for fat loss and muscle gain, while requiring much less time. How? Read on to know more! SIT vs. HIIT: The real difference Both SIT and HIIT fall under the umbrella of high-effort training. The difference lies in the intensity and duration. HIIT typically involves short bursts at about 70–90% of max effort for 30 seconds to 4 minutes, followed by active recovery. SIT pushes the body to 100% max effort, but for even shorter periods, i.e, usually 20 to 30 seconds, with longer rest in between. This tiny variation in form creates a huge variation in result. What does the research say A review of 75 studies that contrasted Sprint Interval Training (SIT), High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training (MICT) produced astonishing findings: SIT created more than 90% more fat loss than MICT. It was also 39.6% better at lessening body fat than HIIT. On average, SIT workouts took 60–70% less time, but produced the highest outcomes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo In real-life terms, in terms of time commitment: SIT volunteers trained -390 minutes over 9–10 weeks HIIT took -995 minutes MICT took -1350 minutes Just 7 minutes a session, 3 times a week, for SIT and still performed higher than longer routines. What goes on in those 7 minutes? Here is a typical SIT workout: Warm-up: 2–3 minutes of gentle movement Sprint rounds: 3-6 rounds of 20–30 seconds maximum effort Rest intervals: 2–4 minutes walking or complete rest between sprints Cooldown: 1–2 minutes to bring the heart rate back to resting level Although the work period is brief, the physiological effect is tremendous. Sprint intervals ignite fast-twitch muscle fibers, stimulate growth hormone release, enhance fat burning, and enhance post-workout calorie burning. The body burns calories for hours after the workout is completed and it is a process referred to as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Why it works SIT's success relies on trying your best. In contrast to HIIT or MICT, it recruits the entire range of muscle fibers, specifically those responsible for explosive power. This provokes a more intense metabolic response, enhances insulin sensitivity, and speeds up fat breakdown. It also: Raises levels of testosterone and growth hormone Raises VO2 max (a metric of cardiovascular capacity) Enhances mitochondrial efficiency, or the cells become more efficient at utilizing energy And it accomplishes all this without long sessions or heavy weights. Who all can try it SIT is scalable and that's part of why it's gaining popularity. A beginner can begin with: Just 2 sprints lasting 20 seconds each and 3 to 4 minutes rest between rounds. Gradually, one can progress to 6–8 sprints. The mantra is quality over quantity. Each sprint should be an all-out effort. Note: Patients with existing heart or joint problems should see their doctor beforehand. Because SIT is so strenuous, it places a greater burden on the cardiovascular system. Can it build muscle too? Yes, especially in the legs, glutes, and core. Sprinting places a high mechanical stress on the muscles, which causes muscle sparing and, in some instances, even lean muscle growth. This also makes SIT a better choice for those who prefer a lean, athletic physique over bulk.
