The Canucks were outplayed in their loss to the Golden Knights. Vegas held a 26-22 even-strength scoring chances advantage, while Vancouver also lost the even-strength high-danger scoring chances battle 10-8. While there were some positive moments in the game, the Canucks struggled to match the Golden Knights speed, which ended up costing them on Sunday night.
As for the heatmap, it is a good illustration of how Vancouver's defence struggled against Vegas. The Golden Knights generated shots from all over the zone and were able to get 35 shots on Kevin Lankinen. Yes, it is a positive that the Canucks were able to limit Vegas to just eight high-danger shots, but overall, they struggled defensively as the Golden Knights held most of the possession.
Looking at the forward lines, Vancouver's top trio was Nils Höglander, Pius Suter and Brock Boeser. During their 11:19 of ice time, the Canucks held a 9-6 scoring chances advantage, while also outscoring their opposition 1-0. Overall, this line was impressive as each member was able to generate an individual high-danger chance at even strength.
To wrap things up, Aatu Räty also had a strong night. During his 11:10 of even-strength ice time, Vancouver finished with a 6-5 scoring chances advantage, while Räty led the team with two individual even-strength high-danger chances created. Räty also won six of nine faceoffs and showed once again why he deserves a full-time spot in the NHL.

German great Mueller has goal ruled out on MLS debut for Vancouver

Thomas Mueller made his Major League Soccer debut on Sunday as a second-half substitute for Vancouver Whitecaps in a 1-1 draw with Houston Dynamo that left the Germany great with "mixed feelings" after he had a goal disallowed for offside. Vancouver were up 1-0 courtesy of Brian White's sixth-minute penalty when the former Bayern Munich striker Mueller entered the contest to a massive ovation in the 61st minute. Mueller, a World Cup-winner with Germany whose storied tenure at Bayern included 13 Bundesliga titles, had made his way into Vancouver's BC Place stadium through a throng of excited supporters, high-fiving and shaking hands as he went. The Whitecaps had officially unveiled their new signing on Thursday, a week after he inked a deal through the end of the 2025 season with an option for 2026. The crowd of 26,301 stood and cheered when he was introduced before kickoff, and Mueller applauded fans in return. Minutes after entering the game Mueller blasted a ball into the back of the net, but it was ruled offside. "Mixed feelings, mixed feelings," the 35-year-old said. "The result is disappointing, to be honest. "But, yeah, I came in at my first moment directly with my first goal here. The crowd was going crazy, but then it was taken off for offside. "We have to take the next steps in the next game," he added after seeing Houston's Artur grab the equalizer with a long-range blast in the first minute of second-half injury time. "But I'm very happy to be here. I think the crowd was amazing." The draw left Vancouver in third place in the Western Conference on 46 points, six behind conference leaders San Diego and one back of Minnesota. San Diego moved to the top of the Supporters' Shield standings for best overall record -- ahead of Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati on goal difference -- with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. "We had to win it clear," Mueller said. "We had to get big chances. But in the end, yeah, it's soccer and it can happen." He was happy to have his first MLS match under his belt and looking forward to settling in after a whirlwind first week. "I'm happy now that my first game is in the books," said the German, who joined Bayern's youth program in 2000 and then called the club home for 25 years. "I can start next week, just a regular week," he said. "I just have to settle down today after this game in my apartment and think about what happened this week -- it was crazy stuff." bb/dh

Vancouver Canucks 2025–26 Player Preview: Pierre-Olivier Joseph

Welcome to The Hockey News - Vancouver Canucks site's player preview series for the 2025–26 season. In these articles, we'll preview the players who are expected to play for the Canucks in the 2025–26 season. Today, we'll look at 2025 free-agency addition Pierre-Olivier Joseph. Joseph's 2024–25 Season Joseph is one of only a few Canucks on this list who did not play with Vancouver in 2024–25. He signed a one-year deal with the Canucks on July 2. Last year, he split time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the St. Louis Blues. Despite his low numbers last year (three assists in 47 games with both Pittsburgh and St. Louis combined), Joseph is a solid puck-mover who averaged 17:20 minutes played per game with the Penguins. Joseph's 2025–26 Predictions While Vancouver is a new team for Joseph, some of his surroundings will still be familiar. Joseph is one of many former Penguins who have found their way to Vancouver most likely at the request of Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin and President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford (both of whom spent time in Pittsburgh's management group). Joseph and Drew O'Connor started playing with the Penguins at the same time as one another (2020–21), while Marcus Pettersson and Teddy Blueger were also members of Pittsburgh's organization at the same time as Joseph. Joseph's role with the Canucks will most likely be to provide depth on defence. Depending on training camp, he could be the first man in the lineup if injuries hit the blueline, or he could even start the season as part of the main roster. There's also the possibility that he could spend most of his time with the Abbotsford Canucks, which would be a good scenario for the AHL team given the fact that they have seemingly moved on from Akito Hirose (no contract), Cole McWard (New York Islanders), and Christian Wolanin (no contract).
