Naperville again named among top 100 places to live in America

Chicago Tribune18-04-2025
Naperville has yet again been named one of the best places to live in the U.S. but this time it's also being cited for what it offers by way of health.
Livability.com this week unveiled its 2025 Top 100 Best Places to Live list, an appraisal of mid-sized cities across the country in which a whole host of data points, from cultural amenities to air quality, were considered. Naperville made the cut, scoring No. 1 on factors of health.
This is the 12th annual year that Livability, a division of Tennessee-based Journal Communications Inc., has published its Top 100 list. Naperville found itself on the list last year, too.
Livability's appraisal isn't a ranking 1 to 100 per se, but rather an assembly of places that, according to the publication, fared well on a holistic set of considerations. The idea is that users can interact with the list and create a personalized ranking of their best places to live, Livability says.
Only cities with populations between 75,000 to 500,000 were considered, per Livability's website. The list also took into account cities' affordability, only including cities with a median home value of $500,000 or less.
'As Americans face shifting economic conditions in a year wrought with inflation, evolving work dynamics, and a growing desire for a better quality of life, our 'Top 100 Best Places to Live' list celebrates the cities where Americans are creating dream careers, building families, launching businesses and leading meaningful lives,' Livability's editor-in-chief Amanda Ellis said in a news release.
In all, Livability bases its list on about 100 different data points. Those divide into eight broad categories: economy, housing and cost of living, amenities, transportation, environment, safety, education and health.
Data is pulled from both public and private sources. Federal sources include the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Education, Housing and Urban Development, and Department of Homeland Security. Private sources include satellite imagery and business associations.
Based on their performance across factors, cities earned a grade, or a 'LivScore.' More than 2,000 cities that fit its population parameters for 2025 were evaluated before the group was narrowed down to the top 100 scoring cities.
Naperville scored a LivScore of 841 out of 1,000. The only other places to score higher than Naperville overall were the Texas towns of Flower Mound and Sugar Land and Carmel, Indiana.
But Naperville took the top grade in health, earning the highest LivScore — 91 — in the category.
Data points that factored into the list's health rating included life expectancy, doctor and hospital access, and prevalence of health concerns, such as diabetes, asthma and cancer, according to Livability.
Other top categories for Naperville included education and safety.
As part of its 2025 list, Livability wrote about Naperville: 'Located on the outskirts of Chicago, Naperville residents have it all. Top-rated schools, pristine parks and a busting downtown offer a high quality of life. Throw in a low-cost of living and a tight-knit community, and it's easy to see why Naperville residents love living in this Midwest city.'

Former Ryder Cup captain to help lay out new golf course in Wisconsin

Wisconsin native and former Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker will serve as a player consultant on a new course to be built in the southern section of the state less than an hour from Milwaukee. Stricker will join forces with Jackson Kahn Design and architect Scott Hoffman to lay out what will be become the private Kettle Forge in Ashippun. Wisconsin already is one of the best golf states in the U.S., especially on the public-access side with destinations such as Whistling Straits and the other courses at Kohler, Sand Valley and Erin Hills. Kettle Forge, with an anticipated opening in 2027, is about eight miles west of Erin Hills, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Open as well as this year's U.S. Women's Open. Nebraska-based Landscapes Unlimited will build the course on 270 acres. Its sister company, Landscapes Golf Management, will operate the club as well as oversee the course grow-in and handle membership sales at Kettle Forge. 'This is pure, unadulterated golf without tennis and swimming,' Bill Kubly – chairman of Landscapes Unlimited, a principal of Kettle Forge and a Wisconsin native – said in a media release announcing the course. 'Based on our work at Lost Rail outside Omaha, Kettle Forge is likely to reach a full membership before the course opens.' The Kettle in the name refers to local glacial kettles (steep-sided hollows) and mounds in the landscape. Holes on the 7,600-yard course will traverse wetlands and feature wide fairways across dramatic elevation changes. The clubhouse and guest cottages will be located atop a big hill with 20-mile panoramic views. 'Kettle Forge will uniquely look like a natural preserve with grasses, wildflowers and wetlands,' Brett Craig – a Wisconsin resident, former president and COO of Transitions Optical and a principal of Kettle Forge – said in the media release. 'It promises to be a course that attracts repeat play – fair to members yet exhilaratingly difficult for those who desire challenge amid rugged elegance and timeless appeal.'

Trader Joe's is bringing back its mini tote bags this fall: Here's what we know

Trader Joe's beloved mini canvas tote bags are coming back this fall. The California-based grocery store confirmed to USA TODAY on Aug. 18 it plans to release more mini canvas tote bags in the fall, although the company declined to share any further information regarding colors, pricing and when customers can expect to see the bags. The Reno Gazette Journal, part of the USA TODAY network, reported on Aug. 13 the bags will be available in black, orange, purple and a multicolored option and will cost $2.99 each. The last batch of bags was released in April and appeared to be Easter-themed, as they were available in pastel shades of blue, pink, purple and green. Mini insulated tote bags available now While the mini canvas tote bags are not available at the moment, Trader Joe's does have mini insulated totes available now. The bags, about the size of a lunchbox, are available in two colors: peach and blue. They are available for $3.99 each. Mini canvas tote bags went viral last year In March 2024, the mini totes became so popular that customers waited in lengthy lines to get their hands on them. Viral videos on TikTok showed frenzies and long lines at the stores, where employees were often forced to limit how many bags customers could purchase. The "mini canvas tote bags certainly sold more quickly than we anticipated," Trader Joe's representative Nakia Rohde told USA TODAY in March 2024. "Before we had the opportunity to promote them in any way, customers across the country found them at their neighborhood Trader Joe's." The overwhelming hype led people to list the bags for as much as $500 on online marketplaces like Facebook and eBay. At the time, Trader Joe's made it clear that it was aware of the resellers, adding that it was "done without our approval or authorization and outside the controls of our quality-minded supply chain." The company continued, "To be clear, we neither condone nor support the reselling of our products and do all we can to stop the practice."
