Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center and Yas Clinic first in UAE to receive AABB accreditation for haematopoietic progenitor cell collection
ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) and Yas Clinic have been granted a highly-regarded global accreditation by AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) for Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Collection. This achievement marks ADSCC and Yas Clinic as the first to earn this accreditation in the UAE, and the second in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), meeting the highest standards of quality and safety in in the procurement, processing, and storage of hematopoietic progenitor cells, which are critical for transplantation and treating various blood disorders and autoimmune diseases.As a Centre of Excellence in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, accredited by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and an accredited facility by the Foundation of Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT), ADSCC and Yas Clinic's AABB accreditation further reinforces their commitment to excellence in cellular therapy and solidifies their leadership in regenerative medicine. ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) As part of its ongoing Year of Community 2025 campaign, Yas Clinic Khalifa City and Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center hosted a celebration in honour of Matar, a young bone marrow transplant (BMT) patient who recently completed a long and challenging medical journey. Building on the success of previous community-driven initiatives, including Al Harith's High School Graduation Celebration and the Colours of Hope wall art project, this event marks a new chapter in Yas Clinic's mission to humanise the healing journey and celebrate the resilience of its patients. The initiative was led by the hospital's social worker, Rahma Almehairi, and brought together Matar's family, his medical team, and special guests in a joyful gathering that honored his strength and determination. To make the day unforgettable, a popular content creator surprised Matar with gaming-themed gifts, followed by a live video call with his favourite gaming influencers, allowing him to connect with the digital world he loves most. "In moments like these, we see the true spirit of healthcare - resilient, compassionate and uplifting.' said Robert Ball, CEO of Yas Clinic hospital. "Matar's story reminds us why we do what we do.' "Supporting Matar emotionally during his recovery was just as important as his medical treatment.' said Rahma Almehairi, Social Worker at Yas Clinic, Khalifa City. "This small celebration gave him a big memory - and this is at the heart of our work during the Year of Community.' "Despite the health challenges I went through, I was able to achieve this accomplishment thanks to God, the support of my family and my country," the Emirati teen said. He underwent a successful transplant in Abu Dhabi with bone marrow donated by his sister. "She donated her bone marrow to me, gave me a new life, may God reward her," Matar said.

Look: How this UAE hospital is bringing colour and hope to children's cancer unit
Yas Clinic Hospital and the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) have turned the walls of their pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit into a series of cheerful murals as part of a new initiative called 'Colours of Hope.' The project aims to brighten the treatment journey of young patients by surrounding them with images that spark imagination and build hope. It was launched under the UAE's Year of Community campaign and painted by Mariam AlHarthi, an Emirati artist and Yas Clinic employee. One wall features cartoon-style drawings of frontline workers standing beneath a falcon. Another shows a young Emirati boy and girl wandering through a desert and coming across a treasure chest near a watchtower and palm trees. A third painting shows two gazelles. According to a press release issued by ADSCC, the murals reflect themes of discovery, strength, and national pride, helping children imagine a future beyond illness. 'Every colour that brightens the walls of our pediatric bone marrow transplant unit reflects a powerful strength I witness daily in our young patients and in our medical team at Yas Clinic Hospital and Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre,' said Dr Fatema Al Kaabi, executive director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Programme. 'My ongoing wish is that these vibrant paintings breathe new hope into children as they go through their treatment. Through art and imagination, we strengthen each child's resolve and celebrate a unique journey toward healing.' Dr. Mansi Sachdev, consultant in Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant, added: 'When a child enters the bone marrow transplant unit, the road ahead can seem so long and difficult. My hope is that, through 'Colours of Hope,' every child and their family finds in these paintings a source of happiness, strength, and inspiration. "These aren't just images on walls, they tell a story of renewed potential, opening a door to laughter and light even in the hardest times. We are here to heal their bodies, and with compassion and creativity, we care for their spirits as well.' ADSCC said the project is part of its ongoing effort to make the healing environment more child-friendly and emotionally supportive for both patients and their families.
