A big cargo ship called
Morning Midas
, which was carrying around 3,000 new cars to Mexico, sank in the North Pacific Ocean near Alaska. The ship had caught fire weeks earlier and couldn't be saved.
The ship caught fire on June 3 while sailing about 300 miles southwest of Adak Island, Alaska. The fire was big, the 22 crew members had to evacuate into a lifeboat and were rescued safely by a merchant ship nearby.
The fire and what happened next
No one was hurt in the fire or the rescue. After the fire, the ship was left disabled in the ocean, and a salvage crew reached it days later. On Monday, the ship finally sank in deep international waters, about 415 miles away from land near Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

The water there is around 16,400 feet deep, making recovery tough. The sinking was caused by a mix of fire damage, bad weather, and water leaks. The ship was carrying about 70 fully electric cars and 680 hybrid vehicles, which were likely affected by the fire, according to a CBS News report.
Ship, fuel, pollution risk, and safety plans
The ship had left Yantai, China, on May 26, heading toward Mexico. The Morning Midas was 600 feet long, built in 2006, and was sailing under the Liberian flag. There was a lot of fuel on board, about 350 metric tons of marine gas oil and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil.
Live Events
There was a lot of fuel on board, about 350 metric tons of marine gas oil and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil. The U.S. Coast Guard said there's no pollution seen right now but ships are nearby in case anything spills. Two salvage tug boats with pollution control gear are staying at the spot to watch for oil or debris. The crew of those tugs are safe, as stated by CBS News report.
A special pollution control ship is also being sent just in case. Captain Christopher Culpepper from the U.S. Coast Guard said they're focused on safety and working closely with Zodiac to handle any pollution quickly.
A similar tragedy happened in 2023, where another ship carrying 3,000 cars caught fire including 500 EVs and burned for a week. One person died in that case. The Dutch safety board now wants to improve emergency plans for ships carrying electric vehicles, according to the CBS News report.

Maharashtra government officials yet to confirm if FYJC first merit list to be out today

Mumbai: Confusion prevailed till late Wednesday as state officials did not confirm whether or not the first seat allotment list for admission to junior colleges would be released on Thursday. As reported by TOI on Wednesday, state officials said the FYJC admission software had been updated, but if a "query arose while running it, they would have to declare a fresh date to release the admission list". On Monday, state issued a Govt Resolution (GR) clarifying that Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Category reservations will not apply to minority colleges, following which officials allotted seats under the altered seat matrix in minority colleges. "We are working on a war footing basis to release the list and we hope to do so on Thursday. If not, we will declare a fresh date," said an officer. Jal Shakti minister reviews Har Ghar Jal scheme in Bundelkhand villages

1 2 Lucknow: During an inspection of villages in Bundelkhand to assess the impact of the Har Ghar Jal scheme, Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh on Wednesday interacted directly with residents and said that 90% of the homes were receiving potable water. However, the minister also received some complaints regarding low pressure in elevated areas, broken pipes and leakages, and the absence of supply in some areas. The minister, who was accompanied by additional chief secretary Namami Gange and rural water supply department, Anurag Srivastava, directed local officials to address the complaints on priority. He directed officials to address these complaints immediately through measures like the installation of additional pumps and necessary repairs. The minister is on a three-day visit to Bundelkhand to review the implementation of water supply schemes. On the first day, Singh did not stick to his original programme and visited villages that were not on the schedule to carry out surprise checks. "About 90% of rural homes in Bundelkhand are receiving potable drinking water and work is on in mission mode to ensure 100% coverage of the remaining homes. I am here to ensure that every individual benefits from the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme to deliver water to every household," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A failing liver is taking my son away from me! No safe passage for pedestrians on Korukkupet Bridge

Chennai: The 500m Cochrane Basin Bridge at Korukkupet, a crucial link between residential areas and Central railway station, has turned into a daily hazard for pedestrians, particularly for those heading to the nearby Tondiarpet Peripheral Hospital. Though the 12.2crore bridge was built to decongest traffic near the railway gate, its narrow pedestrian path abruptly ends midway, forcing users onto a busy, fast-moving carriageway. Residents say the lack of a continuous walkway makes it dangerous, especially during peak hours and rains. With concrete plates broken, and pavement lights defunct for more than two years, many commuters risk their lives crossing the railway track below instead of using the footpath. Beer bottles, garbage heaps, and stray animals block access to the stairs. While the city conducts drives to control the stray animal menace, this bridge is completely overlooked. The corporation should act before it causes an accident," S Ganesh, a resident of Meenambal Nagar and regular commuter said. The adjacent hospital sees regular foot traffic from vulnerable groups, yet there are no ramps or shelters to ease their commute. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo During rain, the moss-covered walkway turns slippery, said S Gopal, a resident of Korukkupet. At Meenambal Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar, locals complain that damaged medians allow the road to turn into a chaotic two-way passage. This not only worsens vehicle congestion but also heightens risk for pedestrians. However, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials said they did not receive any formal complaints and added that fibre cone medians would be replaced and debris cleared soon. Residents who filed multiple complaints through the Namma Chennai app say no action was taken.
