Thomas Edison and Henry Ford among the original snowbirds: The rich going to Florida for the winters

Associated Press13 hours ago
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Thomas Edison and Henry Ford are famous for their innovations in electricity generation and automobiles respectively, but they were also at the forefront of a massively popular trend in Florida: Rich people from up north spending the cold winter months in the Sunshine State.
Edison first visited Fort Myers in 1885 after a doctor suggested spending time in Florida's warmer climate for health reasons, and he built a house along the Caloosahatchee River the next year. Ford made many visits to southwest Florida to see Edison and purchased the property next door in 1916.
Southwest Florida became their vacation spot, Edison and Ford Winter Estates marketing director Lisa Wilson said. Edison spent most of the year in New Jersey, while Ford lived in Michigan.
'They came down here to escape the cold like many snowbirds do today. But they worked when they were here, so it wasn't just vacation time,' Wilson said.
Before spring breakers
Fort Myers was basically a group of farmers living in an abandoned military fort, using tallow lamps for light, when Edison first visited, Edison and Ford Winter Estates historian Isaac Hunter said.
'The following year after he built his home, he had a generator installed across the street,' Hunter said. 'There were about 350 residents, almost all of them came over to the property to watch the lights get turned on.'
While Edison never powered the rest of the city, his illuminated home gave neighbors an appetite for electricity, Hunter said. About a decade later, a local business man bought a generator for his canning plant and eventually develop a rudimentary grid to power the city.
Edison's first connection to Ford came in 1891, when Ford was working as an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit, Hunter said. The job involved no direct contact with Edison, but they eventually met at a meeting in 1896. Ford left the company to further develop his automobile designs, but his admiration for Edison continued.
'Henry Ford was a huge fan of Thomas Edison, and as he started to work on automobiles and become a bigger, bigger name in the world, he continued to contact Thomas Edison, write letters, ask him advice,' Hunter said.
They became friends in 1914, when Edison invited Ford and his family to Fort Myers.
Friends and neighborsAs Edison, Ford and another visitor, naturalist John Burroughs, were getting acquainted in southwest Florida, they decided to go on a camping trip, setting off into the Everglades in a parade of Ford's Model Ts.
'There weren't roads. The Tamiami Trail, Alligator Alley did not exist in 1914,' Hunter said. 'So they're driving through Florida wilderness. They got about halfway out. Marshland, forest, they were miserable.'
They finished their camping trip at Edison's estate. The trip may not have been a complete success, but it began a decade-long tradition of trips throughout the U.S. and led to Ford buying the property next door to Edison in 1916.
Harvey Firestone, founder of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, later joined Edison, Ford and Burroughs, and the quartet became known as the Vagabonds. The trips gave the industrialists a chance to discuss business and eventually reach the conclusion that the U.S. needed its own source of rubber.
Where the rubber meets the roadBesides the obvious use of rubber in tires, it was used in practically all industrial manufacturing.
'All of these gentlemen, they used rubber every single day,' Hunter said.
The U.S. at the time had been purchasing latex and other botanical rubber supplies from overseas, but the disruption of that supply caused by World War I demonstrated how important it was for the U.S. to have its own source. And since rubber was made out of plants, Edison, Ford and Firestone concluded that southwest Florida would be an ideal place to grow and test many different plants.
They opened the Edison Botanical Research Laboratory in 1927 and tested over 17,000 different samples of rubber plants, Hunter said.
Edison eventually settled on goldenrod as the best natural source of latex. He envisioned farmers planting and harvesting the crop, but this never happened. Edison passed away in 1931, and the the lab shut down a few years later, around the time a petroleum-based synthetic rubber was developed, Hunter said.
'This process, especially in the 30s, was cheaper, faster, and it really took up the rubber production of the United States,' Hunter said.
A lasting legacy
Edison's widow deeded his Florida property to the city of Fort Myers for public use in 1947 for $1, and it was opened for tours a short time later.
The neighboring Ford property was sold and occupied as a private residence for several decades until the city bought it in 1988. A nonprofit organization took over administration of the entire property in 2003 and oversaw a $14 million restoration project.
'Thomas Edison and Henry Ford really put this city on the map, and today it's an international tourist destination,' Wilson said.
Visitors can explore a museum featuring some of Edison's 1,093 patents, including the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb, along with the research lab and gardens.

NASCAR Rumors: Kaden Honeycutt Replacing Corey Heim in Truck Series Next Season

The NASCAR silly season for the Cup Series has been very quiet this year, with a majority of the drivers either already under contract or signing extensions earlier this year. However, the Truck Series is delivering a lot of movement, including a potential shakeup involving Corey Heim and Kaden Honeycutt. On Tuesday's episode of the Door, Bumper, Clear podcast, host and spotter Freddie Kraft said that Honeycutt is signing with Toyota and it's obvious that he'll be driving the No. 11 for Tricon Garage next season. 'He (Honeycutt) is leaving Niece Motorsports. He is signing with a Toyota team. You can probably put two and two together that he's going to be the one to replace Heim in the 11.' Freddie Kraft on Kaden Honeycutt's Truck Series team in 2026 Related: Kaden Honeycutt stats (): 525 points, two top 5s, nine top 10s, 11.6 average starting position, 14.4 average finishing position, 44 laps led in 17 races On Aug. 4, Niece announced that it was parting ways with Honeycutt just weeks before the Truck Series playoffs. The move was made, per Bob Pockrass, because Honeycutt signed a deal to race for a new manufacturer in 2026. Fortunately for Honeycutt, he found a short-term stop to continue his pursuit of a Truck championship. The Stewart Friesen injury opened up a spot in the No. 52 car and Honeycutt was brought in as a substitute driver for the remainder of the season. Read More: Honeycutt is now poised to join Tricon/Toyota next season, taking over the No. 11 truck driven by Heim. It's a great opportunity for the 22-year-old, joining a No. 11 team that has the highest average starting position (4.9) and the most poles (seven) in the Truck Series this season. Where will Corey Heim race in 2026? Heim's landing spot in 2026 is unclear. The Daily Downloads claimed on Monday that Spire Motorsports has made a 'significant push' to get Heim for the No. 7 car in the Cup Series next season. The current driver of the No. 7, Justin Haley, is reportedly on the hot seat and Heim is the best driver among very limited options this offseason. While Heim is a development driver for 23XI Racing, a Toyota-backed team, there's no car available to him right now at the Cup level. Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace are under contract and, as an unchartered team in a legal battle with NASCAR that is costing tens of millions of dollars, 23XI Racing can't afford to lose the financial backing that Riley Herbst brings. Read More: One alternative for both Heim and 23XI Racing could be to work something out with Legacy Motor Club, which is trying to secure a third charter in 2026, one way or another. Heim has driven part-time for LMC in the past and could be an option if one of their pursuits works out. 23XI could also try and find a way to move Heim into the Xfinity series, but even a part-time role in Xfinity and Cup with a Toyota team might not be enough if another team is willing to offer him a full-time Cup ride next season. Why Didn't I Think of the Flip-Up Truck Bed Cap?

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Being a pickup man, I'm a sucker for a good truck bed topper. I write about cool ones whenever I get the chance, whether it's a modern overlanding unit that stands out from the rest or a handcrafted, vintage-style one-off that took more than 100 hours to shape. I was pretty sure I'd seen them all until I stumbled across these super-roomy Matrix toppers by Black River that flip up for easy unloading. Why didn't I think of that? They come in different shapes in sizes, but no matter which one you pick, it's made with lightweight and durable .063 automotive-grade aluminum. The Matrix GT is the sleekest design, offering 105-120 cubic feet of storage with a lid that lines up with the roof of your truck. Then there's the Matrix ST, which sports the same capacity but more of an angular teardrop shape that works better for taller loads like dirtbikes. And finally, the big-boy Matrix XL fits on HD pickups with 6'9″ beds, offering 138 cubic feet of capacity when closed. Matrix GT Matrix GT Matrix GT Matrix ST Matrix ST Matrix ST Matrix XL Matrix XL Matrix XL It's tough to visualize how much cargo space that is without a comparison. For reference, a new Ford Expedition with the rear seats folded down features 108.5 cubic feet of storage, while the long-wheelbase Max models top out at 123.1 cubic feet. You get roughly that much, if not more, with the Matrix toppers. And because they flip up, you can access your cargo from every side. Their overall design is just plain smart. The bed caps lock with your truck, and for added security, there aren't any windows on the side; the only glass is at the very back, and it's tinted. There's a smoked third brake light as well. Struts mounted up by the cab keep the lid up while you retrieve whatever is in the bed, and a pull strap makes it easy to lower it back down. (Or, you could get really fancy and buy the power up-down kit for $995.) Black River The Matrix GT and ST toppers weigh between 120 and 130 pounds, so if you have someone else to help you take them off, you can do it in a pinch. As you'd expect, the Matrix XL is heftier at 180 pounds, but the struts on that model also have an increased capacity so you don't have to worry about them being overworked. Quality truck bed toppers are never cheap, and neither are these Matrix models. The GT and ST are $4,195, while the XL is $5,195. You can get them for virtually any modern pickup, but it's best to check Black River's site just to make sure they're compatible with your rig. I can tell you right now that if your Ram has a Ram Box, it won't work. It's a smart idea, and one that I kinda wish I'd thought of myself. Not because I have the first clue about how to manufacture something like this, of course. Just… you know… royalties or something. Got a tip or question for the author? Contact them directly: caleb@
