Pakistan humiliated again as US MP gives stern warning to Bilawal Bhutto's delegation, says, 'Eliminate terrorism and...' Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is leading a team of experts to inform the world about the recent conflict with India, has been facing humiliation throughout his US tour. US lawmaker Brad Sherman gave a strong message to Pakistan and said that it should take decisive action against the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). He described this terrorist organization as vile and said that this group is responsible for many heinous crimes including the murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002. While meeting the Pakistani delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Washington, Sherman said that Pakistan should take all possible steps to completely eliminate this despicable terrorist organization and fight strongly against terrorism in the region. Interestingly, Indian delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is also present in Washington, which is briefed the US officials about 'Operation Sindoor' and the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. India has blamed Pakistan-backed terrorists for this attack and has reiterated its zero tolerance policy towards cross-border terrorism. Brad Sherman on X said, 'I told the Pakistani delegation the importance of the fight against terrorism, especially against the group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which killed Daniel Pearl, a resident of my constituency, in 2002. His family still lives in California. Terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh was convicted in the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl.' Role of Jaish-e-Mohammed Jaish-e-Mohammed is declared a banned terrorist organization by the United Nations and is also believed to be responsible for several major attacks in India, including the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 40 Indian soldiers were martyred. Apart from terrorism, Brad Sherman also expressed concern over the condition of minorities in Pakistan. He said that Christians, Hindus and Ahmadiya Muslims in Pakistan should get complete freedom to follow their faith without fear and participate in the democratic system. Demand for release of Dr. Shakeel Afridi The US lawmaker also demanded the release of Dr. Shakeel Afridi, who allegedly ran a fake polio vaccination campaign to find Osama bin Laden with the help of the CIA, was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to 33 years. Sherman said that the release of Dr. Afridi would be a big step towards justice and closure to the victims of 9/11.

‘Operation Clean' set to sweep Mohali markets, illegal vendors face eviction

In a decisive move against rampant illegal encroachments, the Mohali Municipal Corporation is set to launch 'Operation Clean', a large-scale crackdown aimed at evicting street vendors occupying public spaces across the city's markets. Sources confirm that all preparations for the operation have been finalised, with municipal enforcement teams and police machinery put on high alert to evict the vendors across various phases and sectors. What started as a few hundreds has exploded over the years. A survey conducted by the civic body earlier recorded around 1,000 vendors, but officials say the actual count is more than double the number, severely affecting the commercial landscape. 'These vendors have formed unions and call themselves shopkeepers, alleging that anyone who objects is silenced through collective intimidation. Even councillors admit that some shopkeepers are renting out space in front of their shops to these vendors, complicating the problem.' Residents and traders argue that most vendors are not even from Mohali but commute daily from Chandigarh and Punjab, and do not pay any local taxes. 'Our own legal businesses pay taxes to run day-to-day operations while these vendors sell underpriced counterfeit goods,' a Phase 3B2 shopowner disclosed. Reeling from pressure, a public meeting was held under the chairmanship of Joint Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh to demand swift action. 'The Mayor and MC Commissioner are also collecting Aadhaar and Voter IDs of illegal vendors,' said an official. The civic body has already identified more than 1,000 illegal vendors through a special survey. Officials confirmed that a strict deadline has been set after which all unauthorised vendors will soon be removed.

Lending rates to fall by 30 bps after RBI policy cut: SBI Report

Lending rates are expected to fall by around 30 basis points (bps) following the recent policy rate cut, according to a report by the State Bank of India (SBI). The report highlighted that the immediate impact will be seen on loans linked to the external benchmark lending rate (EBLR), which make up about 60 per cent of the loan book of All Scheduled Commercial Banks (ASCBs). SBI said, "The steep cut on policy rates is expected to pass on to the EBLR linked loan book immediately with ASCB share of 60 per cent. Thus immediate impact on average lending rate could be around 30".The report said the sharp policy rate cut will quickly pass through to the EBLR-linked loans, lowering borrowing costs for many customers. However, this drop in lending rates may affect banks' margins. To help manage this impact, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), which is expected to bring down the cost of funds for banks. SBI stated "The reduction in CRR may not mathematically translate to any change in deposits and lending rates, however, it may have positive impact on margins (3-5 bps on NIM) of the banks".The report estimated that bank margins or Net Interest Margins (NIM) could improve by 3 to 5 bps due to the lower CRR. The CRR cut will also reduce the base money (M0) in the system, increasing the money multiplier by 20 to 30 bps, which could have a positive effect on overall banks have already started lowering fixed deposit (FD) rates. Since February 2025, FD rates have been reduced by 30 to 70 bps. The report expects this trend to continue, with further cuts likely in the coming data shows that cuts in policy rates generally lead to pressure on bank margins. While the exact impact will differ across individual banks, a general compression in NIM is expected. The SBI report added that the future path of monetary policy will depend on economic data and evolving conditions. While policy space is limited, the recent large profit transfer from the RBI to the government has improved fiscal flexibility. For now, the report expects no change in policy rates in the next quarter.
