Man arrested months after fatal shooting of Mbombela doctor outside gym
Sibanyoni was killed on November 20, 2024. The suspect is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Thursday to face a murder charge, Mpumalanga News reports.
The Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, said Sibanyoni was fatally shot at around 06:00 on the said date.
'She was walking towards the gym after parking her car at the parking lot of Virgin Active Riverside. A Toyota Starlet drove towards her, and a gunman exited the vehicle and shot her three times before fleeing the scene. Nothing was stolen from the victim,' Mdhluli said.
The police and paramedics responded to the scene. Sibanyoni was lying on the ground outside her car and was declared dead by the medical personnel.
Mdhluli confirmed that the case was handed over to the provincial murder and robbery unit in Mpumalanga, which successfully investigated the matter as a gender-based violence and femicide case, leading to the current arrest.
The police have indicated that they cannot rule out the possibility of further arrests as the investigation remains ongoing.

SAPS arrest 1 000 illegal immigrants in gold mine near Barberton
South African police have arrested some 1 000 undocumented migrants working in gold mines in the northeast of the country. A police spokesman for the Mpumalanga province, where the week-long sweep took place, told AFP there could be more arrests because there are still illegal miners underground. 'As they are coming out, they have been taken,' said the spokesman, Donald Mdhluli. The police operation, which started on Monday, targeted clandestine mining near the village of Barberton, close to the borders of Eswatini and Mozambique. The Sheba Mine is owned by Barberton Mines who said in a statement: 'Earlier this year there was outcry from the community and employees when Barberton Mines retrenched workers as the mine was unprofitable and facing closure. Now we know the reason why! 'Food and supplies have been getting to a thriving illegal mining world underground, which had to be stopped, hence this intervention with the police and mine security. This message needs to be spread and illegal mining will not be tolerated,' it added. 'About 1 000 illegal miners who are also illegal immigrants have been arrested,' Mdhluli said, calling it a joint operation between mine security and the police. He said that 'there are no fatalities recorded so far'. The arrests come less than a year after a similar operation conducted near the town of Stilfontein, west of Johannesburg, where at least 90 clandestine miners lost their lives before their mines were definitively shut in January. As in the Stilfontein operation, police near Barberton surrounded the illegal mine to prevent supplies entering, forcing those inside to come to the surface. Former Durban pastor's car window smashed in alleged road rage attack
A former pastor from Chatsworth, Durban, and his family are left traumatised after the side window of their vehicle was shattered in an alleged road rage incident along the N2 recently. According to Rising Sun, Ernest Manikam (71) was returning from a family funeral and driving along the N2 freeway with his family when they were involved in a horrific road rage incident that almost cost them their lives. Manikam explained: 'The drama unfolded when we were returning from the Stellawood Crematorium on the N2 southbound on July 3. We just laid our close family member to rest, and I had a car full of people chatting. I was travelling in the fast lane at a speed of around 100km/h when suddenly, a red Volkswagen Polo slowed down in front of me. I immediately hit the brakes, causing everyone in the vehicle to jerk forward. The driver continued going at a slow speed, so I moved to the centre lane to avoid him. He followed and blocked me. He continued doing this until we came to the Chatsworth off-ramp. 'There was a truck on the left side and he jammed us on the right. We were all in shock and feared what would happen next. The driver of the vehicle then got out of his car and came towards us swearing. We were not sure if he had a gun or a knife in his possession. My daughter screamed and told me to close the window. Luckily, I was able to do so. He tried to punch me on my face but ended up hitting the driver's side window, causing the glass to shatter. By God's grace, I managed to swerve the vehicle and made my way to the Bayview police station.' Manikam is unsure what triggered the attack. 'I don't understand why this occurred. The driver was an Indian male. As a pensioner, it is very unfair to me. The costs I incurred following this incident amount to R1 953. I am a pensioner, and this is not easy on me. He should be found and brought to task for this incident. My daughter recently had a stroke, and this has negatively impacted her health. Both my daughters and I needed medical attention due to this reckless behaviour. All passengers, including myself, are still traumatised. We battle to sleep at night. It was one of the scariest experiences of our lives. Road rage is real and we have just become victims of it,' he added. Manikam's daughter, Amelia Isaac (48), also commented. She said: 'To date, we have no clue as to why we had become the target of such abuse and trauma. It was only through the divine intervention of God that we are all safe and alive. My father is still shaken from the ordeal, but we pray that the perpetrator is identified and brought to book. My father is a well-known figure in community circles. He had preached in many churches across Durban. We appeal to law enforcement to deal with the matter decisively.'
