Schmeichel in no hurry for contract talks but loving every day at Celtic
The Danish keeper arrived in Glasgow as Joe Hart's successor a year ago and enjoyed a successful first season with Premiership and Premier Sports Cup success, as well as a run to the knockout stage of the Champions League.
He signed a one-year contract extension in January that takes him through until next summer, with no certainty about what the future holds beyond that.
Speaking to STV ahead of his side's Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty, that will decide whether Celtic get another crack at the League Phase fo the elite competition, he said his own situation was far from a priority.
'No, that's just not how how we operate right now,' he said. 'There's a massive game and all focus is on that.
'I can't imagine that's important to them or to me, at the moment.
'I've got a contract and it is what it is at the moment. We'll take that at some point.'
Schmeichel will turn 39 this season, playing well beyond the age that most professionals reach, and just over a year away from what would be a real landmark.
He says he's not contemplating either retirement or a definite push towards football at 40. Instead, he takes the view that he should enjoy every day doing a job he loves.
'The way I've looked at it, football is very, very unpredictable,' he said.
'You take nothing for granted. You know, one big injury could finish your career at any point of your life.
'So you take each and every day on its merit. Each game on its merit. And you enjoy every single one of them.'
He added: 'For me, I don't think in limitations. I don't think 'I need to get to there' or 'I need to get to here'.
'Every single day it's 'How can we get better? How can I get better? What can I do to to improve not just myself but the people around me? Are we giving enough?' All those kind of things, that's that's how I measure it.'
After a sunny day preparing for another European night under the lights at Celtic Park, the veteran international reflected on seeing his dad Peter end a long and decorated career and said it made him appreciate just playing for as long as he can.
'I know if that passion and that love and desire one day starts to starts to wither, then that might be the time to to finish, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.
'But you know I'm just enjoying every single minute of playing.
'I'm very lucky in the sense that I've had a father who's gone through that process.
'I've seen it close up first hand so I haven't gone through, but I feel like I've gone through it.
'So for me, I'm in an incredible position to just enjoy it and there's a long, long, long life after football, hopefully.
'There's a long life after football, so while you're a footballer, I don't think you're ever gonna find a better job in the world.
'It's just about enjoying it, you know. You've seen today, a sunny day with the pitch watered and the Champions League balls out, diving around.
'I mean it's never gonna get better than that.'

Sky Sports Italy claim that he is set to undergo a medical with the Revolution after a fee was agreed, with Maccabi due a quarter of any future transfer fee. My friendship with Rangers boss Russell Martin will count for nothing in Champions league pressure cooker
Martin and Brugge boss Nicky Hayen go back three years to when they were both managing in Wales Club Brugge boss Nicky Hayen has backed pal Russell Martin to handle the heat at Rangers. But the Belgian says their three-year friendship will count for nothing at Ibrox this week as he looks to pile on the pressure by dumping him out of the Champions League. Hayen and Martin got to know each other in 2022 when they were both managing Welsh clubs. The Rangers gaffer was then at Swansea, while Hayen was in charge of minnows Haverfordwest County. The pair struck up a relationship but didn't actually get to meet each other until this season's summer friendly between Brugge and Gers. Now they'll face off in a crunch £40million play-off tie. Hayen rates Martin highly and expects him to succeed at Ibrox - but not before he's got one over on him. The Brugge coach said: 'I like Russell very much. I was at Haverfordwest County when he was at Swansea. 'I wanted to visit Swansea for two days, which he allowed but we just couldn't find the right date. 'We then arranged a friendly game between the two teams. It was scheduled but then I left to come to Brugge. 'We spoke a lot, texted a lot and stayed in touch. But we never actually met until he came to Rangers. 'We have a really good connection but tomorrow night that won't count. 'He's a great manager. If you see the results he got at Swansea and Southampton, that's clear. 'This is a great step for him to come here. Of course, he's got a lot of pressure but I'm sure he'll deal with it. 'He's a manager who has a certain style of play and it's very clear how he wants to play - dominant, attacking football.' Hayen was in Glasgow last November when Brugge were terrific in the Champions League against Celtic - but only got a 1-1 draw. After that experience, he says the Ibrox atmosphere won't faze his players. And as much as he thinks his team will get chances - he's refusing to under-estimate Martin's Rangers. When asked about not getting what he deserved at Celtic and making sure it doesn't happen again, he said: 'Correct. 'Look, it's difficult to compare the two teams (Rangers and Celtic). What they have in common is they play with a lot of intensity. 'It's similar because they want to play offensive football and they're supported by wonderful fans, which gives them a boost. But we showed at Celtic Park that we're ready for every kind of atmosphere. We just have to play our own game. 'Do I see opportunities for us to take advantage of? Yes, of course. 'This game will be different from the friendly. Of course, we analysed the game and saw some patterns. But Rangers have bought some new players. They have more quality now. We have to be 100 percent ready for Tuesday night.' Brugge defender Joaquin Seys says the Belgian champs believe they can grab a first-leg lead in Glasgow. He said: 'We're confident and we play every game to win. We're in good form and want to perform at our best. That's what we're going to do. 'I played at Celtic Park and it was a great atmosphere. 'I've heard many stories about here as well, it's going to be crazy. But I'm excited to play here.'
