Sheppard AFB tackles aviation safety with bird control measures

Yahoo12-05-2025

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — To ensure aviation safety, Sheppard Air Force Base (SAFB), in collaboration with the City of Wichita Falls and the United States Department of Agriculture, will soon implement non-lethal methods to disperse a large flock of birds.
According to a release from SAFB, the Cattle Egrets have begun roosting on private land just west of the base, but their flights passing over the SAFB airfield present strike threats to aviation safety.

SAFB said that while strikes are usually rare, in July 2013, a single Cattle egret strike over the AFB airfield resulted in the ejection of two pilots and complete loss of a T-38 Aircraft, valued at $8,000,000.
The dispersal methods are pyrotechnics and propane cannons, which will sound similar to gunfire and will take place during daylight hours, ending at sunset.

This Is Your Brain on Revenge

I grew up on a small farm in central Pennsylvania with a small herd of cattle, pigs and chickens, but my folks weren't real farmers. My father was an insurance agent and my mother a homemaker. This became a source of contempt from the neighboring kids whose fathers tilled the land. My dad walked into his office in town around 10 a.m. wearing a suit and shiny shoes; their dads were in their milking parlors before sunrise, wearing overalls and manure-covered boots.

Wichita Falls city council backs grant for Circle Trail project

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The city is attempting to complete the Circle Trail by applying for a grant through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). On Tuesday, June 3, Wichita Falls city council signed a resolution supporting the city's efforts. It's a step that city officials needed to take to apply for the grant by Friday, June 20. Assistant Public Works Director Tyson Traw said the grant is competitive. If approved, the grant will cover 80% of the construction cost. The city will match 20%. The total cost is about $5.6 million. 'This will include the construction funds for the construction, design and environmental permitting if necessary,' Traw said. 'We intend to incorporate a lot of safety measures, bollards and things like that that we've heard from concerned citizens.' At the last city council meeting, Lake Shore Drive neighbors continued to raise concerns about the trail's location. Traw said the city should know by October whether it has received the grant. From there, it could be another two-and-a-half years before the last of the trail is complete. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
