Google
CEO
Sundar Pichai
has weighed in on one of football's most enduring debates, "Messi or Ronaldo"? The top executive has named
Lionel Messi
as the greatest player of all time though he also said that his son is a
Cristiano Ronaldo
fan. Speaking on a recent podcast, Pichai offered a candid and personal take, even contrasting Messi's genius with the rigorous excellence of Cristiano Ronaldo.
When directly asked to settle the "Messi or Ronaldo, or Pele, or Maradona" question, Pichai, with a chuckle, declared Messi stands alone.
Pichai acknowledged the internal dynamic of his own household, admitting, "It's been interesting, 'cause my son is a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan, and so we've had to watch El Classicos together, you know, with that dynamic in there."
"I so admire CR7's, I mean, I've never seen an athlete more committed to that kind of excellence, and so he's one of the all time greats.
But you know, for me, Messi is it
," Pichai added.
He also shared an instance when he went to watch Messi play.
"Had the chance to see him a couple weeks ago, he played in San Jose, so against the Quakes, so I went to see it, see the game. Was a fan, had good seats, knew where he would play in the second half, hopefully. And even at his age, just watching him when he gets the ball, that movement, you know, you're right, that special quality, it's tough to describe, but you feel it when you see it," he said.
Pichai says leading Google is like coaching Barcelona or Real Madrid
In the same podcast, Pichai likened leading Google as coaching Real Madrid or Barcelona. When asked about the challenging period, Pichai pointed to his ability to "tune out noise," comparing it to managing a top-tier sports team.
"Running Google, you may as well be coaching Barcelona or Real Madrid," Pichai stated, acknowledging that "you have a bad season."

Mbappe a doubt for Real's Club World Cup opener

Real Madrid could be without striker Kylian Mbappe for their Club World Cup opener against Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after the Frenchman missed training due to illness. New head coach Xabi Alonso will make his debut on the Real bench for the Group H match at Hard Rock Stadium and could be without several regulars. Defender Antonio Rudiger and the versatile Eduardo Camavinga are also likely to miss out against the Saudi team. "Kylian was feeling a little better this morning, but not enough. It's very hot and it was better that he didn't train. But we will wait until the last moment. Tomorrow morning we will decide," said Alonso. "Rudiger made a brutal effort this season and I don't know if he will be called up tomorrow, but he is progressing well and will be the first to return. Camavinga is also improving quickly, but he needs time," he added. Al Hilal will also have a new coach on the bench with Italian Simone Inzaghi having joined after leading Inter Milan to the Champions League final. Alonso said the change of coach means that it is difficult to know what to expect from Wednesday's opponents. "We have to prepare for the game in the best possible way. They will be a tough opponent, without a doubt. But it's time to focus on ourselves. They haven't made their debut with Inzaghi yet, so we don't know how they will play. "We have to have hunger to win, to compete, to want to play well. We have to mix a lot of things, but that self-love, that feeling of team, that defending the badge... The team already has it, but we have to work on it. We must be a team," he said. Alonso was asked about the right-back position where Dani Carvajal faces competition from new arrival Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has joined from Liverpool. "It is a privilege to have such top players. Trent is more flexible in positions, but Carva has a lot of personality and competitiveness. The initial impact of Trent has been very good." Alonso was quizzed for his opinions on several players and unsurprisingly was upbeat about his squad, suggesting that England's Jude Bellingham may be more effective in a central midfield role than in the more advanced position he has sometimes operated in. "Jude has the ability to cover a lot of the pitch. He has the soul of a midfielder, he likes to participate, but he has the great quality to arrive. The important thing is the starting point. Finding him in the right places is going to help us because he has impressive qualities," he said. Alonso will get a brief spell to enjoy working with Croatian midfielder Luka Modric before the 39-year-old leaves the club. "It's easy with him. We always had a great relationship, friends and now coach-player. I like his relationship with the younger ones, he is a very good influence. We want to enjoy him in these weeks. He's a player of the era, being able to squeeze him a little more will be a luxury," he said. sev/rcw

Jobe Bellingham's Borussia Dortmund debut match ends in draw against Fluminense at Club World Cup

Jobe Bellingham fans were not left disappointed as the English midfielder finally made his much-anticipated debut with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. Borussia Dortmund took on Fluminense in their Group F opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium on June 17. Jobe Bellingham was on the bench and entered the game in the 59th minute, replacing Pascal Gross, according to Sky Sports. Just before the match, Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac had confirmed that Jobe Bellingham will not be a member of the starting XI. 'Anticipate this: He will not play from the start because the one week since he joined us is not enough to internalize all our processes and all our principles,' quoted Kovac as saying. Jobe, the younger brother of Real Madrid and England footballer Jude Bellingham, was roped in by Dortmund from English side Sunderland just last week for $38 million. This was a record fee for the newly promoted Premier League sides. Jobe's brother Jude Bellingham was a part of Borussia Dortmund for three years between 2020 and 2023, before he signed with Spanish club Real Madrid. It is in the German side that Jude made a name for himself as a vital midfield cog. Since then, he has gone on to become a prominent face both in Real Madrid and the England national team. Experts and fans have high hopes from Jobe Bellingham too. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder scored four goals with three assists in his 40 matches with Sunderland during the 2024-25 season. In Borussia Dortmund's midfield, he can play a versatile role, both as No. 8 who sits back deeper and the offensive No. 10. He was associated with the club between 2023 and 2025, scoring 11 goals in 85 matches. Jobe Bellingham is the younger brother of Jude Bellingham. The match ended in a draw.
