David smashes 83 as Australia beat South Africa by 17 runs in T20 series opener
After being sent in, the hosts were all out for 178 on the final delivery of their 20 overs in the first game of international cricket in Australia's tropical north for 17 years.
Cameron Green (35 off 13) was the only other batsman to get going, with left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka bagging 4-20 as South Africa bowled out Australia for the first time in a T20.
But David's phenomenal innings proved enough, with the Proteas restricted to 161-9 in reply. That was despite a battling 71 from Ryan Rickelton, who fell to a spectacular Glenn Maxwell catch on the boundary.
Josh Hazlewood took 3-27 and Ben Dwarshuis 3-26.
'Great way to start the series,' skipper Mitchell Marsh said after Australia's ninth T20 victory in a row.
'Certainly we want guys like David to come out and bat the way he did, he was the difference.'
Backing up from a recent 5-0 series sweep against the West Indies, Australia signalled their intent early with Marsh slamming a six off the first ball.
But he lost opening partner Travis Head (two) and Josh Inglis (golden duck) in the space of three deliveries and then skied Kagiso Rabada on 13, with Maphaka taking a tricky catch before Green and David let loose.
They put on a quickfire 40 for the fourth wicket before Green was undone by a slower ball from Lungi Ngidi.
Australia were in trouble on 75-6 when Mitch Owen was out for two and dangerman Maxwell went for one.
But David dug in and, with Dwarshuis (17), added 59 for the seventh wicket.
David was dropped by Tristan Stubbs on 56, although Stubbs made amends by holding the catch that finally removed the big Australian after a power-packed knock.
South Africa's chase started badly with skipper Aiden Markram out to Hazlewood in the first over, and they had lost three wickets for 48 by the sixth over.
Rickelton and Stubbs (37) knuckled down in a threatening 72-run stand but Hazlewood struck again with two wickets in an over to shatter their momentum. South Africa's hopes were all but over when Adam Zampa matched Hazlewood's feat in the next over. 'It got close, but we were pretty far from our best tonight,' Markram said.
The second of the three-game series is in Darwin on Tuesday.
Labuschagne plots Ashes return: Dropped Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne says he is determined to bounce back and prove the doubters wrong, putting his hand up to open in the Ashes series against England.
The long-time number three was axed from Australia's Test tour of the West Indies in June and July after a sustained lean spell.
In his first comments since, he told The Australian newspaper on Sunday that it may have been a blessing in disguise.
'It was tough because you never want to be dropped,' the 31-year-old said.
'But almost as soon as their (selectors) words came out my mind shifted straight away to, 'Okay, how am I playing the Ashes ... how do I make that happen?'.
'This has given me an opportunity to reflect and not having the pressure of the media saying, 'Marnus has got to go'.
'There is a tipping point but it's something I thrive on, proving the doubters wrong and being able to find a way.
'Missing those West Indies Tests gave me the chance to sit back and think, 'This is where I want to be and this is how I'm going to get there'.'
The 58-Test veteran was moved from his regular spot at three to open in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa in June, where he scored 17 and 22 before being dropped.

Nmecha penalty gets Leeds up and running on Premier League return
A late penalty from new signing Lukas Nmecha earned promoted Leeds United a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton in their first match back in the Premier League on Monday night. Leeds dominated the first half in front of a raucous Elland Road crowd, but wasted a host of chances to break the deadlock. Everton, on the other hand, did not muster a single shot, on or off target, in the opening period. The visitors brought on close season arrival Jack Grealish as they improved after the break, but James Tarkowski's handball gave the hosts the opportunity to snatch victory six minutes from time. Nmecha, a free transfer ahead of the new campaign, stepped off the bench to emphatically convert from the spot, ensuring Leeds, back in the top flight after a two-year absence, got their season off to the perfect start. "On field, it felt like a penalty in the moment, perhaps it was also a bit emotional with the roar of the stadium," Leeds boss Daniel Farke said. "Lukas' first two or three touches were not spot on -- I was a bit worried because normally he's an outstanding penalty taker. "I was overthinking if I should tell him today it's perhaps not the day to take a penalty. Thank God I didn't step in. He was ice cold and calm." For the past two seasons the three teams that have come up from the Championship have gone straight back down, but Monday's performance made Leeds look like a team that could buck the trend. Joel Piroe brought a fine early save out of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with the Dutch striker then twice going close to an opener in the first half as the away side toiled. It took until eight minutes into the second half for the visitors to manage a shot at goal, Idrissa Gueye hammering an effort well over the top. While Everton looked more of a threat after the arrival of 100 million pound forward Grealish, who is on loan from Manchester City, they still lacked a cutting edge. Leeds got the goal their efforts warranted, even if Everton felt aggrieved over the penalty decision. "It's not a penalty," Everton coach David Moyes said. "We didn't play well enough on the night, but the big frustration is the referees have actually had a bad opening weekend. I just don't know what the rules are supposed to be." Following Sunderland's win on Saturday, Leeds' success means that for the third time in Premier League history two promoted sides have won in the opening round of fixtures.

Haaland off the mark as new City signings shine: Premier League team of the week
The first weekend of the 2025/26 Premier League season is done and dusted, with Championship winners Leeds United closing out the action with a 1-0 win over Everton at Elland Road on Monday. Leeds sealed a quick return to the Premier League by edging the Championship title race last season, finishing on 100 points along with Burnley but with a better goal difference. Lukas Nmecha took just five touches to register his first Premier League goal after being introduced as a late substitute, with the Wolfsburg signing converting from the spot to see Leeds take all three points. The season kicked off on Friday, with Liverpool surrendering a two-goal lead before Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah scored to cap an emotional night against Bournemouth in which late striker Diogo Jota was remembered by the Kop. Promoted Sunderland briefly held top spot on Saturday following a 3-0 win over West Ham United. It was the Black Cats' first Premier League win in eight years. Manchester City's new signings shone in a prolific start for Pep Guardiola's side, with Erling Haaland also registering his first goals of the campaign in a 4-0 demolition of Wolves. On Sunday, Arsenal showed Manchester United there is still plenty of room for improvement despite a massive summer outlay on new players as the Gunners left Old Trafford with a 1-0 win. Here is our team of the week (4-3-3 formation). Manager Daniel Farke (Leeds United) Has the unwanted record as the only manager to lose 15 consecutive matches in England's top tier, so masterminding Leeds' triumphant Premier League return, with the inspired late introduction of Nmecha, secured victory over Everton and a small measure of redemption for the German coach. Goalkeeper David Raya (Arsenal) Pulled off seven saves to deny a new-look Manchester United attack as the Gunners got their season up and running with three points. Defenders Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace) The Colombian was reliable when called upon in defence and offered menace going forward as Palace played out a goalless draw against Chelsea. William Saliba (Arsenal) Stood firm in the face of anything Manchester United could muster and also got an important flick that led to Arsenal's winner at Old Trafford. Dan Ballard (Sunderland) Regis Le Bris handed debuts to seven players in Sunderland's first match back in the English top flight in eight years but it was the stalwart of last season's promotion who shone brightest with a goal and a clean sheet against West Ham. Rayan Ait-Nouri (Man City) With Wolves offering no attacking threat, the left-back was allowed to showcase his attacking and crossing skills against his former club. Midfielders Tijani Reijnders (Man City) A goal, an assist and an all-round display capped a memorable first game in English football for City's new midfielder. Pape Matar Sarr (Tottenham) Brilliant in the Uefa Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, the Senegalese was again the driving force as Spurs dominated Burnley to open their campaign with a 3-0 win. Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth) Showed immense courage to carry on after being the victim of racist abuse in the first half at Anfield. His two superb second-half goals are a testament to his character and quality. Strikers Erling Haaland (Man City) He's back. City's chief consumer of goals bagged a brace in the 4-0 demolition of Wolves as City signalled their intent to reclaim their Premier League throne. Richarlison (Tottenham) Two superb finishes – the second an early contender for goal of the season – against Burnley was just the start the Brazilian and Spurs needed under new coach Thomas Frank. A man-of-the-match performance on his Premier League debut. The 22-year-old Frenchman showed some delightful touches and no shortage of composure with a goal and an assist against Bournemouth.
