S. Korea to join multinational air exercise in UAE
The three-week Desert Flag exercise will begin at Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE on Monday, involving service members from 13 countries, including the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia, according to the armed service.
South Korea will send a team of some 30 Air Force personnel and a C-130H transport aircraft for the exercise, which will include training on low-altitude infiltrations, cargo drops and tactical landing operations.
The Air Force said the exercise will also involve service members from South Korea's Akh unit stationed in the UAE for joint high-altitude parachuting drills. South Korea has participated in Desert Flag since 2023. (Yonhap)

Russian agency begins attracting tourists to N. Korea's new beach resort
A Russian travel agency has begun promoting tours for foreign visitors to North Korea's new beach resort, its website showed Saturday, following a period during which entry for foreign nationals had been temporarily suspended. Vostok Intur, a Vladivostok-based travel agency, announced on its website that it will offer all-inclusive packages for travel to the Kalma resort in Wonsan from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1. On the first day, it said, travelers will take a bus from Vladivostok to Russia's Khasan Station, then transfer to a train and enter North Korea via the Tumen River Station, before heading to the tourist zone. The seven-night, eight-day package includes accommodation at a four-star hotel, all meals, and a Russian-speaking tour guide. For groups of three to five people, the price is US$1,250 per person plus an additional 20,000 rubles (about US$250), amounting to roughly $1,500 per person, according to the agency. Larger groups receive discounted rates. The agency described the tour as a unique opportunity to experience North Korea's culture and history, largely untouched by Western influence. North Korea opened the Kalma beach resort on July 1 but abruptly suspended foreign tourist entry on July 18, sparking speculation that the halt was to address shortcomings discovered during its trial operation. S. Korea's flight delay rate slightly rises to 23.6% in first half
Nearly one in four flights operated by South Korean airlines in the first half of the year experienced delays in their departures or arrivals, data showed Sunday. The average delay rate for domestic and international flights operated by 10 domestic airlines from January to June stood at 23.6 percent, according to the data from the transport ministry and Korea Airports Corp. Of the 329,736 flights operated in the first half, 77,700 were delayed. A flight is considered delayed when it departs or arrives 15 minutes past its scheduled time. The delay rate for the first half marks a 1 percentage point increase from the same period last year. The delay rate for international flights gained 3.1 percentage points over the cited period, while that of domestic flights dropped by 1.4 percentage points, the data showed. The increase in the delay rate was partly attributed to a record number of international flights in the first half of the year, which stood at 264,254, leading to airport congestion, along with frequent turbulence and airspace restrictions on international flight paths. By airline, Air Seoul reported the highest delay rate of 36.5 percent, suggesting more than one in three flights experienced delays in departures or arrivals. An Air Seoul official said some of the delays had occurred due to safety inspections, adding the airline will strive to minimize customer inconvenience in the second half. (Yonhap)

Russia's FM leaves N. Korea after 3-day visit
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has left North Korea after wrapping up his three-day visit to the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, the North's state media reported Monday. Lavrov departed the country via Wonsan Kalma Airport on Sunday after being seen off by North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui and Russia's top envoy in Pyongyang, according to the Korean Central News Agency. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met Lavrov on his yacht in Wonsan on Saturday. During the talks, Kim reaffirmed his "unconditional" support for Russia's war against Ukraine. Lavrov also held the second round of strategic dialogue with his North Korean counterpart Saturday. They vowed efforts to advance the bilateral relations between the two nations into long-term strategic ties by faithfully implementing a mutual defense treaty. Experts said North Korea appears to have invited Lavrov to Wonsan in an effort to promote a newly opened tourist zone and attract Russian tourists. After visiting the North, Lavrov flew to China to attend a foreign ministerial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states, according to Russian media reports. (Yonhap)
