As of August 1, 2025, India has installed 29,277 public electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) across the country, according to data from the Ministry of Power. This marks a significant increase from 25,202 stations in December 2024, with 4,075 new installations so far in 2025.
The government has allocated Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme to support the installation of adequate EV charging stations on a pan-India basis, addressing the growing demand for electric mobility infrastructure. The Ministry of Power has also issued the 'Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024,' aimed at creating a connected and interoperable network that includes both charging and battery swapping stations.
Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for 2,326 public charging stations, with the highest numbers in Gautam Buddha Nagar (100), Prayagraj (88), and Agra (88). The setup of EVCS is classified as an unlicensed activity, allowing any entity to install charging points nationwide.
Year-wise public EVCS growth: December 2022: 5,151 stations
December 2023: 11,903 stations
December 2024: 25,202 stations
August 1, 2025: 29,277 stations
This update was shared by Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Battery Visionary

At the core of Exponent's offering is a seamlessly integrated ecosystem: the e^pack (battery), e^pump (charger), and e^plug (connector), all designed to work together. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. When Arun Vinayak co-founded Exponent Energy back in 2020, he wasn't just launching a new business—he was setting out to solve what he believed was the biggest hurdle in India's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem: energy. "As the EV market evolved, it became obvious that the driving experience had finally caught up with traditional petrol and diesel cars," Arun shared. "But we were still facing issues like long charging times, poor battery life, and a lack of infrastructure. These weren't isolated problems—they were symptoms of a broken energy system." This insight inspired Arun and his team to create a solution from the ground up. At the core of Exponent's offering is a seamlessly integrated ecosystem: the e^pack (battery), e^pump (charger), and e^plug (connector), all designed to work together. The outcome is a standard lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that can fully charge in just 15 minutes and lasts for an impressive 3,000 cycles. "What sets us apart," Arun noted, "is our ability to provide ultra-fast charging without sacrificing affordability or battery life." One of Exponent's standout innovations is its heat management system. Rather than using bulky and costly onboard cooling systems, Exponent has cleverly integrated the thermal system into the charging station itself. "Our off-board cooling circulates refrigerated coolant through the connector, cooling each cell individually," he explained. "This keeps the battery at its optimal temperature—even in India's extreme weather—without adding extra cost or weight to the vehicle." Even with its current success, Exponent's path hasn't been without its bumps. "India hasn't historically excelled in hardware innovation," Arun admitted. "Finding the right talent and fostering a strong engineering culture was essential." Convincing manufacturers to embrace their technology was another challenge. Arun addressed this by engaging directly with end-users. "Once we demonstrated the value to customers, it became much easier for OEMs to place their trust in us." Today, Exponent powers over 1,700 vehicles across five Indian cities (Delhi NCR, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Hyderabad) and has completed more than 350,000 charging sessions."We've just rolled out India's first and the world's third 1 megawatt fast-charging technology for heavy electric vehicles," Arun shared. Looking to the future, he envisions tremendous growth. "We've demonstrated that the technology is effective and scalable. Now, it's all about branching out into different vehicle types and cities," he explained. "The EV battery market is just beginning, and we're thrilled to be at the forefront." Arun's goal is straightforward: "Our mission has always been to make energy simpler and electrify transportation. That's a commitment that remains unchanged—and it always will." Facts:

2026 Rivian R2 Spied With 4Runner-Like Dropdown Rear Window Down

One of the coolest features Rivian showed at the R2 EV's debut appears to be on its way into production. A pre-production 2026 Rivian R2 testing on public roads in the U.S. was spotted with its dropdown rear glass in the down position. One of the only other SUVs on the market in the U.S. with a dropdown rear glass is the Toyota 4Runner, which retained the feature for the new sixth-generation model that launched this year. While some people may not be surprised to see the dropdown rear glass on the R2 make it to production, there are changes that have been confirmed between the debut and production for the lower-cost EV for the startup automaker. At the 2026 Rivian R1T Quad launch the automaker's CEO, RJ Scaringe, confirmed to media that the R2's accessory port, originally shown at the EV's debut, will not make it to production. The Scaringe cited resources, market demand, costs, complexity, and the ability to streamline development for the demise of the accessory port. 'The accessory port is one of those really hard decisions because we have to put what we call SCAR costs, like a cost on every single vehicle, for what will be maybe a very, very small take, right? So even if 5% of people use it, everyone has to pay for it,' Scaringe said. The R2's tow receiver will now serve as the mounting point for accessories, which will not be as simple as the plug-and-play accessory port solution initially shown. Another feature Scaringe said won't make it from concept to production are the fold-flat front seats. The exec again said this came down to cost vs. market use case and everyone getting to pay for the feature's development and production. Still, Scaringe said someone should be able to sleep in the back of the R2, and the factory-backed rooftop accessory tent is on track to launch alongside the R2 in 2026. The charge port location itself on the R2 will be relocated on the production car as another change in the name of functionality. The debut car featured a charge port on the right rear fender under a flip-up cover hiding a Tesla-style NACS port. The production car features a charge port hidden under a much larger door on the driver-side rear fender. The change was made so the R2 can be easier to charge at Tesla Supercharger, which Rivians have plug-and-charge access to. Tesla's have their charge ports on the driver-side rear fender, which has dictated the design of the Superchargers themselves and the charging cord arrangements. The R2 prototype spotted rolled on BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain A/T tires and sported yellow brake calipers. On today's larger, more expensive R1 those yellow brake calipers indicate a tri-motor powertrain. The R2 will be available with a tri-motor powertrain, though certainly not at the $45,000 base price. That base model will be a single-motor model with a dual-motor model splitting the difference between the two powertrains. Those tri-motor models are said to sprint from 0-60 mph in under three seconds. Quick little buggers. We'll have to wait to see more, but not for long, as the 2026 Rivian R2 is set to enter series production in Normal, Illinois in next year.
