Crystal Palace ultras deliver suitcase of fake money to Uefa HQ in protest to Europa League ruling
Palace had qualified for the Europa League through their stunning FA Cup victory over Man City, a historic first major trophy in the club's history.
However, Uefa has ordered the Eagles to play in the third-tier European competition for breaching multi-club ownership rules. The club crucially missed a March 1 deadline to demonstrate that American co-owner John Textor, also a part-owner at Lyon, had no control or influence over more than one club in the same competition.
Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) decided Textor's interest in both clubs meant only one could enter the Europa League, with Lyon 's higher league position of sixth edging out Palace, who finished the Premier League campaign in 12th. Nottingham Forest are expected to benefit from the Eagles' demotion, replacing them in the Europa League following their seventh-place league finish.
After hundreds of supporters made their feelings clear in an initial protest outside Selhurst Park, The Independent understands that members of Palace ultras Holmesdale Fanatics - who organised the first march - today travelled to Uefa's HQ in Nyon, Switzerland to combat the perceived injustice head-on.
It was revealed in a statement that they gained access to the building to hand deliver a letter addressed to Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin, which demanded a reversal of 'this moral injustice' and Palace's reinstatement into the Europa League.
The group also presented Uefa with a suitcase of fake money, which represented 'the contradictions between their supposed 'fundamental values' of integrity and fairness, and the reality of their business methods and general conduct'.
Uefa declined to comment when approached by The Independent.
Following the protest in Nyon, they travelled to the Lausanne headquarters of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reiterate their desire to have the ruling overturned.
This came less than two hours before CAS confirmed that Palace had lodged an appeal against Uefa, Forest and Lyon regarding the alleged breach of multi-club ownership regulations.
The appeal procedure will be expedited with a decision expected on or before August 11.

David James hopes Alexander Isak can help Liverpool win multiple trophies
Former goalkeeper David James believes Liverpool need striker Alexander Isak to be able to win trophies at home and in Europe. The ex-England international admits the forward may not be 'the most viable signing' due to Newcastle's £150million price tag, but the Reds' long-term interest in the Sweden international shows how valuable they think he could be to them. Extricating Isak from St James' Park will be far from straightforward, even though the player has not joined his team-mates for their pre-season tour of South Korea and is privately telling people he wants to move to Anfield. However, James said Liverpool will have done their homework and know exactly what difference he can make to a team which won the Premier League in head coach Arne Slot's first season, but came up disappointing short in the Champions League. 'Arne is in the most wonderful position to be able to have to defend titles,' James told the PA news agency after surprising a St Helens walking football team as part of an initiative run by Carlsberg. 'Liverpool will give it the best they can, but there is a bigger carrot of 'can you be dominant in Europe?'. 'Bringing in someone like Isak is not the most viable signing, but when you want to be achieving on multiple levels then you are going to need that squad. 'If Isak comes in – if – then it will be because Liverpool will feel they need him rather than having the money just to get someone. 'What is interesting here is when you look at (Mohamed) Salah last season, he scored the goals but his assist numbers were what got me. 'How much influence he has on players to be better than the numbers they were recording last season will be exciting – and that includes Isak if it goes through. 'These players are coming into an environment where they are at least expected to improve and as Liverpool are currently Premier League champions then improvement would be adding another trophy hopefully.' Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group have undertaken an unprecedented spending spree this summer with almost £300m bringing in club-record signing Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. All are under the age of 24 and have helped reduce the age profile of the squad while also being a long-term investment. While Isak would be the summer's marquee signing, there are concerns Liverpool could be leaving themselves short at centre-back with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez – who returned home from the Far East to have treatment on an injury – the only senior players for that position. They have been linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, who has a year left on his contract, but currently have not made any move. James, however, is not too concerned at present. 'You'd think their offence will always be better than the opposition's defence and they will be able to out-score other teams except for the occasional game,' he added. 'The idea Liverpool have to have the best defence would be wonderful, but I don't think they have to rush into buying someone. It might be something that happens in January. 'The end of the Champions League campaign is naturally when you come up against better teams and your defensive issues can be called into question. Manchester United's lack of European football does not seem to have put off Benjamin Sesko, who is said to be favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcaatle United Benjamin Sesko has proven Alan Shearer wrong as he angles for a move to Manchester United. The Slovenian star has been heavily linked with both the Red Devils and Newcastle United as he looks set to leave RB Leipzig this summer. Sesko, who is valued at £64million, is set to move on after Leipzig missed out on Champions League football. United will be absent from European football completely this season following a torrid 2024/25 campaign, which culminated in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final. After that game, Shearer ripped into Ruben Amorim and his team, blasting their tactics and the club's general direction. The Newcastle icon was adamant United would struggle to attract top players without the carrot of Champions League football. Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, he said: 'They're going to have to recruit very well because clearly a lot of these players are not good enough or not suited to that style of play. They're a million miles off it on and off the pitch and I don't know how they get out of this. 'How do they attract top players this summer and are they even going to be able to pay for them now they're not in the Champions League? Why would big players want to go there?' However, contrary to Shearer's view, it seems Sesko has not been put off by the lack of European football on offer at United amid reports he is favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle, who have qualified for UEFA's top club competition. Newcastle aren't out of the race to sign the 22-year-old. The Magpies' need for a quality forward has intensified after Alexander Isak made it clear he wants to leave the club amid interest from Liverpool. Newcastle are under no pressure to sell their star striker but are giving serious consideration to cashing in on a Swede, who was sent home from the club's recent friendly at Celtic before being ruled out of their pre-season tour to Asia. Head coach Eddie Howe insists the final decision over Isak will be made by the club's board. He said: 'I wouldn't put a timescale on it. I think with these situations, it has to be right for the football club, and everything then is taken into context below that. 'But the club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately, to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. Then it's up to us to make good decisions the other way and try and improve the squad as best we can. That's what we're trying to do, regardless of Alex's situation. 'But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board.'
