Cameroon soccer great Emmanuel Kundé dies at age 68

Kundé scored a penalty against England in the last eight of the 1990 World Cup in Italy before the Indomitable Lions lost in extra time. He also played at the 1982 World Cup when Cameroon made its tournament debut.
'His death is a huge loss for Cameroonian soccer,' the country's football federation said in a statement late Friday.
Federation president Samuel Eto'o hailed Kundé as the 'control tower' and 'defensive wall' on the field.
Kundé twice helped the team win the Africa Cup of Nations — in 1984 and 1988. His second-half penalty was the difference in Cameroon's 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the '88 final in Casablanca.
He made over 100 appearances for the national team.
'He was an intelligent and peaceful man filled with dignity and had a precise magic foot,' Emmanuel Maboang Kessack, a former team member told The Associated Press. 'We will never forget him.'
Kundé died of cardiac arrest in his own home, Maboang Kessack said.
Kundé also played club football in France for Reims and Laval, but his main team was Canon de Yaoundé in Cameroon's capital.

Doan, who joined Frankfurt from Bundesliga rivals Freiburg in the summer, scored in each half. The Japan international scored Frankfurt's second in first-half stoppage time, collecting the ball on the run and scoring past the goalkeeper in one motion. Doan got his second 54 minutes, cutting into the corner on his left foot to put Frankfurt 3-0 up. Jean-Matteo Bahoya, Elye Wahi and Paxten Aaronson also got on the scoresheet for the five-time German Cup winners. On Monday, five-time winners Borussia Dortmund will play at neighbors Essen.

Senegal grind out win against Nigeria to open CHAN title defense
NAIROBI: Senegal beat Nigeria 1-0 in their opening group match at Zanzibar's Amaan stadium on Tuesday to make a successful start to their African Nations Championships (CHAN) title defense. The sides were evenly matched for the majority of the encounter before Senegal, who were meeting their West African rivals for the first time in the championships, managed to break the deadlock in the 75th minute. Midfielder Serigne Koite pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box, drew out the Nigerian goalkeeper and set up Christian Gomis to tap home the winner for Senegal. Senegal's next opponents Congo came from behind to hold favorites Sudan to a 1-1 draw in an evenly-contested game. The Sudanese Falcons had appeared on course to collect all three points after wonderkid Musa Ali Hussein had given them an early lead in the 29th minute. The Al Merrikh striker weaved past a pair of Congolese defenders before releasing a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to give his side a well deserved lead. But a defensive lapse inside the last five minutes allowed underdogs Congo to share the spoils. Substitute Carly Ekongo rescued his country in the 86th minute when he capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area to smash home the equalizer.
