Ghanaian goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan rose to the occasion as the Black Queens beat Algeria 4-2 on penalties to reach the final of the 2024 Women's African Cup of Nations in Morocco on Saturday.
Konlan, who plays for Saudi Premier League side Al Hilal, saved attempts from Marine Dafeur and Ines Belloumou before Evelyn Badu converted from the spot.
The Black Queens will meet host Morocco to continue their pursuit of a maiden WAFCON title. They have reached the final thrice, with the last appearance coming 19 years ago.
Ghana started the match aggressively and Stella Nyamekye almost gave her side the lead when she found the net in the 27th minute. However, the goal was chalked off by VAR for an off-side in the build-up.

Tinubu receives Nigerian women's team after Africa Cup victory

The Nigerian women's national football team touched down in the capital Monday for an audience with the president, fresh off their weekend Africa Cup championship victory over Morocco. Tinubu receives Nigerian women's team after Africa Cup victory The Super Falcons, winners of Saturday's Women's Africa Cup of Nations final, were greeted on the tarmac at Abuja's international airport by traditional dancers, drummers and a swarm of journalists and government officials. They then departed in a convoy escorted by security to meet with President Bola Tinubu. The women brought with them their 10th WAFCON trophy, the culmination of years of dominance at the continent level despite struggles at home over late payments and pay disparities with the men's team. To grab the gold, the Super Falcons mounted a stunning comeback from a seemingly fatal 2-0 deficit, winning 3-2 over their WAFCON hosts in Rabat. Ahead of the match it was announced that Tinubu had personally approved players' tournament bonus payments. The seemingly routine measure has in the past been anything but, with the Super Falcons butting heads with the Nigeria Football Federation over unpaid bonuses after their 2023 Women's World Cup run. Fans in recent years have also called for the team to be paid the same as the men's team, the Super Eagles. At the presidential villa, Tinubu announced that players would be given a three bedroom apartment as well as a $100,000 cash bonus. "We could not be prouder," the president said, adding that he "didn't want to watch the match" at one point because of the stress. Despite the challenges, the team has made an appearance in every women's World Cup since the tournament debuted in 1991. "Nigeria is the best country, with the best women's national football team," said Paul Edeh, chairman of the Benue State Football Association, who was at the airport to greet the team Monday. "What these girls have been able to achieve... the kind of trophies they've brought to us, we've not seen that with the male team," he told AFP. While watch parties erupted in cheers across the country Saturday evening, the overall reaction in the country of some 220 million was relatively muted. Most of the crowd greeting the players as they touched down were airport workers, government officials and journalists. Though the government promised "the streets of Abuja" would "be agog" during a citywide parade, ultimately plans were pared back. For many fans, however, the team got its proper roses with Saturday's trophy, which also served as a temporary relief from the country's many crises, from jihadist insurgency to spiralling inflation. Muhammad Awwal, a taxi driver in Kano, told AFP over the weekend that the women helped Nigerians "momentarily forget our common problems". "All our problems were drowned in the frenzy of celebration of the spectacular win," he said. nro-adl/sn/lp This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

‘I don't know how long I'll stop for': Pep Guardiola talks about taking indefinite hiatus after Manchester City stint

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said that he will be taking a hiatus after eventually leaving the English club, adding that he does not currently know till when that break will go on. The Catalan coach had taken a one-year break from football after leaving Barcelona in 2012. 'I know that after this stage with City I'm going to stop, that's for sure. It's decided, more than decided. I don't know how long I'll stop for, a year, two years, three years, five, 10, 15, I don't know. But I will leave after this spell with City because I need to stop and focus on myself,' he said in a conversation to GQ Spain as per Independent. Guardiola had a rare trophy-less season in 2024/25 where City finished 3rd in the league and were also knocked out early from the Champions League. 'I'm delighted to have failed. I love failures. In this society where everything has to be perfect, where you have to post your food on Instagram… 'Oh, how good, how happy I am'. Everyday we have to prove that we're happy. Well, yes, I'm sad, I fail and I lose. So?,' Guardiola said on asking about City's 'failures' last season. Last month, City failed even win the Club World Cup when Marcos Leonardo scored his second goal on a rebound in the 112th minute, and Al Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3, eliminating them from the round of 16. In a back-and-forth thriller at Camping World Stadium, the Saudi Arabian club took the lead three times, including twice in extra time. Kalidou Koulibaly put Al Hilal ahead 3-2 in the 94th minute, but Phil Foden — who entered as a substitute four minutes earlier — equalized in the 104th. Leonardo finally put Man City away. Goalkeeper Ederson saved a header by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from inside the penalty box and the ball deflected to Leonardo, who redirected it with his right foot as he fell to the pitch near the left post.

ITBP edge past ten men Karbi Anglong Morning Star in Group D opener

Durand Cup debutants Indo Tibetan Border Police FT edged past ten men Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC 2-1 in the Group D opener of the 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup which was played at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar. Lunminlen Haokip gave the lead for Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC but goals from Pulung Diamary and Hemraj Bhujel gave the para military side the victory and three crucial points. Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC (KAMSFC) Head Coach C A Laldinsang Pudaite named a strong line up which included three foreigners in Joseph Olaleye, Victor Jackson and Ben Nash Quansh while ITBF FT Head Coach Surojit Kumar named a strong line up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation. In another match, a headed goal by Indian Air Force FT defender Sankit, in the last minute of added time, helped his team earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against debutants South United FC (SUFC), whose number nine Makakmayum Daniyal had earlier set alight the Durand Cup, with the first hattrick of the tournament. In a Group A encounter played at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK), the Boys in Green from Bengaluru, in their debut campaign at Asia's oldest tournament and coming off a 0-5 reverse in their first game, displayed exceptional character against much experienced opponents led by the calm and clinical Daniyal, but in the end both teams deservedly spit points. In Assam, both debutant teams were trying to take control of the midfield which made an intriguing battle with both sides cancelling each other out in the centre of the field. KAMSFC, who play in I-League 3, were reduced to ten men in just the 23rd minute when Ghanaian centre back Ben Nash Quansh received a direct red card for a reckless two footed challenge. The referee has no choice but to send off the defender. ITBP took control of possession using the man advantage but it was the side from Assam who drew first blood. Lunminlen Haokip neatly finished a counter attacking move to give his side the lead in the 30th minute. The striker could have doubled the lead minutes later when he pounced on a mistake by the ITBP goalkeeper Ugesh Lama. The goalkeeper could not gather a cross cleanly and Lunminlen who was lurking around pounced but could not put the finishing touches. ITBP equalised in the final minute of first half regulation time through Pulung Daimary, whose neat side footed finish found the bottom right corner after taking a deflection of the defender. KAMSFC were brave with their attacking plays, without fearing about the man disadvantage with Joseph Olaleye creating the most trouble, but there weren't any clear cut chances that troubled the ITBP goalkeeper. ITBP scored the second goal in the 60th minute with a neat team move. Srikumar Karjee received a long diagonal pass in the right wing and the winger fended off two defenders and drilled a low cross into the box which was expertly finished by Hemraj Bhujel past the diving goalkeeper Gojen Hanse. The Assam side could not create any meaningful chances even after having the ball inside the opposition's half as the man disadvantage made it difficult to have more people inside the box. The best chance to equalise came deep into stoppage time but ITBP goalkeeper punched a header by Lunminlen which was heading into the goal. ITBP maintained the slender advantage until the final whistle and secured three crucial points in the group. Durand Cup action will shift to Kolkata on Monday, as Kolkata giants Mohammedan SC will take on another Kolkata side Diamond Harbour FC in an enthralling Group B fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
