Three men, including 2 foreigners, held in traid on illegal iron ore mine
ROMPIN: Authorities detained three men, including two foreigners, allegedly involved in illegal iron ore mining activities at Sungai Ganoh located within the Bukit Ibam forest reserve near Muadzam Shah here on April 30.
During the integrated operation, codenamed 'Op Bersepadu Khazanah', the raiding team seized mining equipment and machinery, including an excavator, worth RM1.25 million.
The General Operations Force (GOF) Tenggara Brigade posted on its Facebook that its personnel, along with members of the Pahang Enforcement Unit (UPNP) elite team, had gone to the site about 3am.
"The enforcement team spotted two Bangladeshi nationals and a local man who was allegedly the operator. They failed to produce any mining licence.
"Both the foreigners had no valid work permits. The trio were handed over to the Rompin police for investigations, while the equipment was seized by UPNP," read the statement.
The GOF said the suspects were being investigated for carrying out illegal mining under the Pahang Mineral Enactment 2001 while the Bangladeshis were being probed for staying in the country without valid documents.
The GOF Tenggara Brigade said it will continue to intensify efforts to curb illegal mining in the country.

Irregular migrant crossings into EU drop 20% in 2025: Frontex
WARSAW: The number of irregular migrant crossings into the European Union dropped by 20 percent in the first five months of the year, the EU's border agency said Wednesday. Warsaw-based Frontex said that a total of 63,700 crossings were detected this year, adding that the main nationalities were Afghan, Bangladeshi and Malian. The biggest decreases in irregular crossings were seen in the Western Balkans (minus 56 percent), the western African route (minus 35 percent) and the eastern Mediterranean (minus 30 percent). There was also a seven percent decrease in migrant crossings from Belarus into Poland and the Baltics to 5,062 crossings, Frontex said. But it pointed to a slight increase of seven percent in the number of migrants crossing the central Mediterranean towards Italy. Frontex also said that the number of migrants attempting to cross into Britain via the Channel increased by 17 percent to 25,540 compared to the first five months of 2024. 'Smuggling networks operating in the area are adapting, using simultaneous departures to increase the number of successful crossings,' it said. Irregular migration has become a political flashpoint across Europe, as seen most recently in the Polish presidential election on June 1 which was won by a nationalist promising to crack down on immigration. Irregular border crossings detected into the European Union were down 38 percent to 239,000 last year after an almost 10-year peak in 2023, according to EU border agency Frontex. But, led by hawks including Italy and Denmark, EU leaders called in October for urgent new legislation to increase and speed up returns and for the commission to assess 'innovative' ways to counter irregular migration.

Sarawak General Operations Force foils attempts to smuggle contraband goods worth nearly RM12 million

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled several smuggling attempts involving various goods worth RM11.93 million during 'Op Taring Alpha' and 'Op Taring Awas/Batas' carried out at multiple locations across the state. Its deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said in the first operation carried out at 4.30 am yesterday, the GOF detained two trailer lorries in Sri Aman suspected of transporting smuggled goods. Advertisement 'Checks on both vehicles uncovered 21,500 cartons of white cigarettes and 51,216 litres of liquor, believed to have been brought in without the payment of duties and valid permits. 'Two local men aged 44 and 50 were also detained, while the two trailer lorries along with four containers were seized. The seizure is estimated to be worth RM10.47 million,' he said in a statement here today. Rosdi said in the second operation on June 8 at about 9.30 pm, the GOF detained two lorries in Bau suspected of transporting rattan without valid documents, and arrested two local men aged 25 and 33. 'Inspections uncovered 15 tonnes of rattan, with the total seizure valued at RM620,000,' he said. Meanwhile, Rosdi said in two separate operations on June 6, the GOF seized frozen products in Bau district and arrested a 49-year-old local man. 'At the first location, a lorry carrying 7,800 kilogrammes of frozen meat without a permit was detained at 10.05 pm, with the seizure valued at approximately RM488,600. 'At the second location, at 6.10 am in Padawan, a 27-year-old man was detained. A Toyota Harrier SUV, reported to have been fraudulently obtained, was seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth RM175,000,' he said.
