Man honored for 'heroic actions,' putting out fire
The Galesburg Fire Department presented Joseph Lamnert with a Civic Excellence Award on Feb. 19, recognizing his heroic actions in extinguishing a kitchen fire in his neighbor's apartment.
Thanks to functioning smoke detectors, the availability of a fire extinguisher, and Mr. Lamnert's quick response, the fire was contained, preventing potentially devastating consequences for both property and lives.
On Dec. 17, 2024, at 5:31 p.m., the Galesburg Fire Department responded to a reportedstructure fire at 1351 W. Carl Sandburg Drive. All 11 on-duty fire personnel responded. BattalionChief Dewey Brackett arrived on scene and observed smoke coming from the building, withresidents evacuating.
Chief Brackett proceeded to the second floor via the exterior stairway and encountered Mr.Lamnert, who informed him that he had extinguished the fire using his personal fire extinguisher. Fire crews then ventilated the apartment and confirmed that the fire had not spread beyond the kitchen.
Investigators learned that neighbors were alerted by the activated smoke detectors in theapartment. Finding the apartment door locked and apparently unoccupied, the neighbors wentoutside and seeing flames in the kitchen window, called 911.
It was then that the occupants of the apartment returned home and were able to unlock the front door. Lamnert then took immediate action to enter the apartment and extinguish the fire. His swift action prevented significant fire, water, and smoke damage to the Hollow Tree Apartment Complex. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen, and there was smoke damage throughout the apartment.
'The combination of the working smoke detector, the readily available fire extinguisher, and Mr.Lamnert's decisive action had a tremendous impact on the outcome of this incident,' said Fire Chief Hovind. 'We are incredibly proud to honor and thank him today.'

Rockford residents battle through hardship to get a high school diploma
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Several Rockford residents who were enrolled in an online high school program received their high school diplomas at the Nordlof Center on Wednesday. The Adult High School Program is offered by the Rockford Public Library to support those in the community battling hardship who want to earn their high school diploma later in life. Over 30% of Rockford residents do not have diplomas because of personal hardships, according to Loomis. The program's Development Director, Brook Loomis, said there were over 175 people enrolled this year. 'I feel like every time we come to these ceremonies, it almost feels more like a pep rally,' explained Loomis. 'Yeah, it brings you to tears because, you see, multi-generational families graduating together.' 'I think it really takes away those barriers that they might have had before,' Loomis continued. 'That's really what we've found with this program is that we allow students to do it on their terms.' One of the program's academic coaches could not be prouder of his students. 'I've been with this program for about eight years, and to see a lot of our students come from where they were to actually getting a diploma,' said Academic Coach Gibson Garcon. 'Some of them didn't even think it was possible.' The program will continue to provide Rockford residents a second chance, with 100 people already enrolled for next year's classes. Fish with Whitehall mayor this weekend
WHITEHALL, Ohio (WCMH) – Whitehall's mayor is sharing his love for family and fishing. Mayor Michael Bivens said he picked up fishing about 20 years ago. When he isn't in the office or at a community event, he likes to get away and cast a line. This Saturday, he's launching the first Father's Day Fishing with Mayor Bivens, a free event. On Wednesday, Dick's Sporting Goods dropped off several fishing poles at Whitehall City Hall that participants can use this weekend. 'Fishing itself is peaceful,' Bivens said. 'It's a way to get out in nature, it's a way to experience life without electronics. Come out and try to catch a fish. Remember, it's called 'fishing,' not 'catching.'' Participants will meet at Whitehall Community Park's lower-level parking lot before heading down to Big Walnut Creek. The event is open to people of all ages and runs from 9 a.m. – noon. Genni Asteri, Austintown, Ohio
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Genni Asteri, left this world peacefully to join her beloved husband in heaven at the age of 100 on Monday, June 9, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 2, 1925, in Caulonia, via Campoli, Reggio Calabria, Italy, daughter of the late Larry (Gilda) Carr and Maria Stella Tassone. Find obituaries from your high school She married Joe, the love of her life, on September 26, 1946, and came to the United States in 1947 with her brother Dominic, followed by her husband in 1949. Genni lived a life filled with love and, devotion to her family and to her Catholic faith, joy in simple pleasures, and warmth and love that extended to all who knew her. She celebrated her 100th birthday on her second birthdate, April 19, 2025, at a party held for her, surrounded by family and friends. Genni worked at Penn Ohio Towel Supply for many years as a seamstress. But her greatest joy was being a homemaker. She was known for her culinary talents, especially her delicious pizzelles she shared with everyone. She delighted in crocheting beautiful afghan blankets, sewing, baking, especially at holidays, canning vegetables from their own garden, and ensuring that no one ever left her home with an empty stomach. In her younger years, she enjoyed shopping and having lunch with her many friends. Her infectious spirit brought laughter and love into her family gatherings, and she loved to tell stories about her life growing up in Italy, and with her husband. Genni was a devoted wife to her late husband, and together they built a foundation of love and support for their family. Her children, her son-in-law, her grandson and his wife, and her great granddaughter meant the world to her, and she treasured the time she spent with them. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Theresa (Paul) Martin of Niles; her son, Joseph A. (Kathleen) Asteri Jr. of Austintown; her grandson, Scott (Christy) Martin; great granddaughter, Meredith Martin; sister, Theresa Trell of Arizona; a brother, Louie (Janice) Carr of Austintown, and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Italy. Genni was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Anthony Asteri, Sr., who passed away November 12, 2017; her parents and stepmother; a sister, Rose Chiera; and three brothers, Dominic Chiera, Guiseppe Chiera, and Vince Carr. Calling hours will take place on Friday June 13, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
