Opera star to perform at North Wales International Festival

Rhyl Journal02-07-2025
Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, described as "probably the world's greatest tenor," will perform at the opening concert of the North Wales International Music Festival at St Asaph Cathedral on Thursday, September 11.
Mr Calleja, whose voice has drawn comparisons to the late Luciano Pavarotti, is a regular at the world's top opera houses, including the New York Met, La Scala in Milan, and Covent Garden in London.
Paul Mealor, the festival's artistic director, said: "I would say that Joseph Calleja is probably the world's greatest tenor – he has done everything.
"Joseph has performed in all the top venues and all the major opera houses, from the Met in New York and La Scala in Milan – and he is just getting better and better.
"To bring him to St Asaph for the very first time is amazing for us.
"It's simply the highlight of the festival."
Mr Calleja's appearance was secured thanks to his friendship with Mario and Gill Kreft, owners of the Pendine Park care organisation and headline sponsors of the festival.
The couple are long-time supporters of the event through the Pendine Arts and Community Trust, which funds cultural and community activities across Wales.
Joseph Calleja said: "I have very many fond memories of Wales, including Llangollen with Bryn a few years ago.
"He is Wales's greatest son and I love him a lot.
"I can't wait to come back frankly because I am also good friends with Mario and Gill and I know it is a special year for them because Pendine is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
"At the concert I'll be singing some popular songs, so it'll be an easy going night.
"We're not going to go too serious but it's serious enough that opera lovers will enjoy."
Mario Kreft said: "Joseph is a generational operatic talent who is right at the top of his game, as is our own homegrown hero, Sir Bryn Terfel.
"The acoustic at the cathedral is among the best in the world so it will provide a perfect backdrop to hear Joseph's magnificent tenor voice at its very best."
Other headliners at this year's festival include the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, choral group Apollo5, and the Black Dyke Band.
Film and TV composer Debbie Wiseman OBE will also make her festival debut, with the NEW Sinfonia orchestra performing a selection of her well-known theme tunes.
The festival will also feature the second Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition, funded by the Pendine Arts and Community Trust.

'We are getting married on stage at the Edinburgh Fringe - please buy a ticket'

When Joseph Martin and Linus Karp met in 2014 while working in retail, they might not have believed that 11 years later they would be getting married. On stage. At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Life is a funny thing – but in this instance, it just makes sense. The duo behind Awkward Productions and their many Fringe hits – including Gwyneth Goes Skiing and Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story – live and breathe the arts festival. This year they are armed with a brand new play, The Fit Prince, in which they subvert and lovingly poke fun at the heteronormative festive romantic comedy genre. (While the status quo is brilliantly camp, they are making it queer.) But never mind that! The couple are also living their own real-life romantic comedy this year. 'Edinburgh is a pretty special place for us,' Linus explains to Metro. 'We were first just looking at getting married where we live in London, but the cheaper places were saying we could only do it in the office every third Wednesday at like 9am and it's booked up for like 12 years, basically. It was ridiculous.' The pair then thought why not do it in Edinburgh – a city which holds so much meaning for their relationship. Naturally, that thought progressed, like a good improv group, into another, 'Why not?' – which brings us to their current situation. 'In England, you have to be in a registered venue. In Scotland you don't. Provided that the owner of the premises says yes, you can get married wherever you like,' Joseph explains. So now Joseph and Linus are counting down the days until their August 16 wedding, which will take place at Pleasance Courtyard Grand venue… in front of 750 people. They are believed to be the first Fringe performers to get legally married on stage as part of a show. Nervous…? 'Obviously there will be people there that we don't know, but there are also going to be people there who are friends and family,' Linus explains. 'I think it's just going to be really fun and exciting, and also just reflect this ridiculous, queer, joyful, performative side of us and our relationship as well.' For Joseph, putting on The Fit Prince is more daunting than tying the knot in front of hundreds of strangers. 'In the show, it's entirely down to us. Whereas with the wedding, the legal bit is handled by the officiant, so we've just got to be there. It's not like if I mess up something completely, then we're not married,' he says. 'Any bad reviews, we'll just blame it on her,' Linus jokes. Direct family members will not have to pay for tickets, Linus and Joseph assure me. But for everyone else? That'll be £12. The officiant will be someone from Edinburgh City Council, who is indeed fully briefed that they will be part of a Fringe show on top of the nuptials. In their hour slot, from 11.15am until 12.15pm, the duo will cram in everything from a grand entrance to special guests, speeches, vows and performances. They are not asking for presents, and the dress code is optional: both are equally happy for festival-goers to dress up for the moment, or to grab a ticket five minutes before and rock up in shorts and a T-shirt. Children are welcome (and infants don't have to pay). However: the wedding will contain strong language. There will also be audience interaction… More Trending 'Anyone who's seen an Awkward Prod show knows that you never just sit back and watch – and the wedding will be no different,' Joseph teases. Will the happy couple be jetting off somewhere nice on their honeymoon after their big day? 'God no! We can't afford that, we're at the Fringe!' Joseph barks. Joseph and Linus' wedding is taking place at 11.15am on August 16 at Pleasance Grand. Tickets here . The Fit Prince is showing throughout August at Pleasance Courtyard Beyond at 16.40. Tickets here. Ivanka Trump showcases her luxury wardrobe items... and the price tags are eye-watering

Ivanka Trump showed off her eye-watering wardrobe in a new Instagram post Sunday - as she sported a skirt and crop top set that cost nearly $2,000. Posing with her son Joseph, 10, on what appeared to be a yacht, the mom-of-three looked summer chic in a two-piece set by Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. Ivanka's skirt, which skimmed past her knees, featured a neutral tweed with tons of multi-colored embroidered flowers on it, in bright blues, purples and yellow. The skirt retails on the designer's website for $1,120 as part of the designer's ready-to-wear collection. Ivanka, 43, also wore the matching crop top, which featured the same floral pattern as the skirt and a square-neck with thick straps. The top is a bit less expensive than the skirt, coming in at $710. In another photo that Ivanka included in the set, she wore a long, blue-and-pink floral maxi dress by cult-favorite brand Hill House Home as she was photographed lounging outside while lounged outside reading a book titled, 'Finding Grace.' The dress by Hill House was a bit more affordable than her embroidered set, retailing for $248. The skirt retails on the designer's website for $1,120 as part of the designer's ready-to-wear collection. The top is a bit less expensive than the skirt, coming in at $710 Other photos that the Miami socialite shared were photos of her kids enjoying the summer as they played various sports like basketball, as well as a recent trip to London. 'Some summer Sundays,' Ivanka captioned the photo carousel. Ivanka's new Instagram post showing off her eye-watering wardrobe comes just weeks after she attended friend Lauren Sanchez's Venetian wedding to Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos in June in a $9,990 dress by Oscar de la Renta. Her outfit of choice, which could be found in the bridal selection on the website, is called the Cherry Blossom Sequin dress, made of white-to-pink Ombré sequins. The mini dress also included delicate embroideries of cherry blossoms along the strap and bust area. However, although Ivanka has reigned supreme in the Trump family for her fashionable looks, there seems to be a new lookalike in town. In recent months, it seems like University of Miami golfer and Donald Trump's granddaughter Kai, 18, has been taking some style notes from her aunt Ivanka. In June, Kai posted a photo of herself in a white dress on vacation in the Bahamas. Ivanka wore a similar boho chic dress in 2023 while traveling in Greece. Ivanka shared a carousel of photos on top of a luxury Manhattan balcony, with the caption, 'Empire state of mind.' For her eighteenth birthday on May 12, Kai posted a photo set celebrating her 'Dancing Queen year', captioned, '17, you taught me a lot about life. 18, I hope you teach me a lot more.' The first photo of the series featured Kai on top of a New York City balcony in a black strapless dress. The two both sported long sparkly gowns for the president's inauguration events in January.

At The Scotsman's Fringe Firsts awards on Friday, writer and performer Jade Franks highlighted the financial impact of bringing even an award-winning show to Edinburgh. Her play, Eat The Rich (but maybe not me mates x), had its funding pulled in June, she explained, meaning the show nearly did not make it to the Fringe. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We haven't broken even, even though we've sold out every single show, which is insane,' she told the crowd. 'If you don't have 30k in your back pocket, it's really difficult to do.' From surgery to sell-out in 70 days Joseph Maudsley, writer and performer of Back to the Future parody Biff to the Future, has been a popular hit at Assembly's Piccolo tent, achieving sold-out shows in its opening week. However, the feat of attending the Fringe at all is an all the more impressive one when I found out that Joseph underwent urgent mastoid surgery in May, after being diagnosed with a rare condition after the Fringe brochure went to print in April. Worst-case prognoses of the procedure include a lost of hearing, facial paralysis, brain infection and balance issues. However, an unbelievably quick recovery meant Joseph was able to go into rehearsals within just a few weeks, taking just one day off to return for a check-up which gave him the green light to leap back onto stage in this energetic show which involves singing, improvisation and audience interaction - as well as remembering 10,000 words of script. Female revenge Hal Munger from Fringe show Thorn and Petal Stick: UnScripted Shakespeare recently tried composing a sonnet while wearing a period cramp simulator provided by The Apologies Play. Their struggle was shared in an Instagram reel with 43k views and 3k likes. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It pulses through my stomach and my soul,' said Hal, in iambic pentameter. 'And now I feel like every period cramp hath left me like a shattered whole.' Marathon signings Fringe By The Sea (FBTS) author Hamza Yassin should get a Guinness World Record gong for his book signings. At his event this week, the wildlife cameraman-turned-children's-book-author kept going for three hours 14 minutes after his show, signing his Hamza's Wild World books and chatting to fans. The queue was kept well entertained by a Boomtown Rats soundcheck and nourished by free chocolate ginger biscuits handed out by the FBTS crew. What's in a name? Is Arthur Hull the only performer at the Fringe to be named after both a statue and a hill? The 20 year-old Australian who is in town with his show, Flop – The Best Songs from The Very Worst Musicals, was born in Edinburgh. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
