CPI(M) slams TN governor for inviting Vice President, calls it ‘disrespect' of SC
The CPI(M), which is one of the allies of DMK-ruled government in Tamil Nadu, on Monday slammed governor RN Ravi for 'disrespecting the Supreme Court verdict' after he invited Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to address the three-day conference of vice-chancellors in Ooty, scheduled to begin from Friday.
'RN Ravi is disrespecting the Supreme Court verdict. Vice Chancellors should boycott the conference. RN Ravi, who continues to act against the people and government of Tamil Nadu, has defied the Supreme Court verdict,' CPI (M) state general secretary P Shanmugham said.
Dhankhar recently criticised the landmark SC verdict that set timelines for governors and the President of India to act on bills based on a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government.
On April 12, the Tamil Nadu government notified 10 bills as law, predominantly related to university appointments, the first legislation in India to take effect without a governor's signature but through the strength of a Supreme Court judgment. The notification follows a landmark verdict on April 8 in which the Supreme Court declared governor RN Ravi's inaction on state bills 'illegal' and laid down unprecedented timelines to curb gubernatorial overreach.
Seven of the 10 newly notified laws transferred power from the governor to the state government for appointing and dismissing vice-chancellors at state-run universities.
While the governor will remain the chancellor of these institutions, the substantive authority will now rest with the state government, effectively with chief minister MK Stalin. The laws is applicable to 18 universities across Tamil Nadu. Following this Stalin convened a meeting with the vice chancellors and officials of the higher education department on April 16.

Tribal rights being violated across country, say leaders

He claimed that believing in any ideology is not a crime as per the Supreme Court directive and killing them until they indulge in any illegal activity is a gross violation of the Apex Court's order. He claimed that state govt is also trying to override the gram sabhas in the state to serve the interest of the corporate groups. He stated, "The convention aims to determine the country-wide agitation for tribal rights. CPI ML would convert all agitations conducted by the tribal societies into a joint agitation." Democracy without dissent is a contradiction and that silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality, but complicity, Supreme Court judge justice Surya Kant has asserted as he invoked India's constitutional ethos and the top court's role in defending civil liberties. Justice Kant, who is in line to take over as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in November this year, was speaking at the Washington Supreme Court as part of an international judicial exchange. In his address earlier this week that underscored the shared constitutional commitments of India and the United States, the judge said: 'Democracy without dissent is a contradiction, and that silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality, but complicity…These are not merely legal precedents; they are constitutional declarations.' Justice Kant highlighted that the right to free speech, protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution and the First Amendment in the US, has been 'zealously defended' by courts on both sides of the Atlantic. Drawing parallels with the US Supreme Court's protection of student protest in Tinker Vs Des Moines (1969), he recalled how India's top court, much earlier, had established the primacy of expression in Romesh Thappar and Brij Bhushan cases in 1950, ruling against pre-censorship and vague notions of public order. 'In both countries, the judiciary has consistently pushed back against the temptation to suppress dissent under misguided and deceptive notions that the executive may hold,' he noted. Reaffirming the foundational nature of constitutional supremacy in both democracies, Justice Kant highlighted that the basic structure doctrine in India that asserts Parliament cannot amend away core constitutional values mirrors the American principle that 'even the majoritarian will must bow' before foundational ideals like liberty, federalism, and equality. 'These doctrines reflect a shared understanding that tampering with these principles would cause a rift so immense that it would threaten the very heart of our existence,' he warned. Citing the Vishaka judgment (1997) where the Indian Supreme Court laid down workplace sexual harassment guidelines in the absence of legislation, he said: 'Though structurally distinct, both approaches reflect a shared judicial philosophy: that justice must not be confined to individual litigants but must be responsive to collective harm and systemic failure.' In contrast, he acknowledged the role of class action lawsuits in the US, such as Lois Jenson Vs Eveleth Taconite Co (1993), where female workers collectively challenged workplace abuse. Addressing the evolution of due process jurisprudence, Justice Kant recalled how the Indian Constitution initially adopted 'procedure established by law' over the American-style 'due process,' but eventually evolved the latter through judicial interpretation. 'In the seminal Maneka Gandhi case (1978), the Indian Supreme Court read into the phrase the requirements of justice, fairness, and reasonableness -- effectively harmonizing our doctrine with the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,' he added. Amit Shah slams DMK govt for scams across departments
Madurai: Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the DMK govt saying it indulged in largescale corruption across departments, and said the NDA alliance would form the govt in Tamil nadu and West Bengal in 2026. "Modi ji sent nutrition kits worth ₹450 crore for poor Tamil people. DMK handed over the contract to a single company and committed massive irregularities. There's a ₹4,600 crore sand mining scam. The Tasmac liquor scam alone amounts to ₹39,775 crore, this money could've built two classrooms in every primary school of Tamil Nadu," he said at the BJP's district and mandal-level office bearers' meeting in Madurai. Responding to Stalin's remark that 'Amit Shah cannot defeat DMK,' he said, 'Stalin Ji, you are right, I cannot defeat the DMK. But the people of Tamil Nadu can. The pulse of the public is clear — this time the people will uproot the DMK govt.' He said the Madurai meeting would be the starting point of the end of DMK's rule. Highlighting BJP's achievements, he said, "2024 was a milestone — Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for a third term. We formed a full majority government in Odisha for the first time, returned to power in Haryana for a third term, and registered a big win in Maharashtra. In 2025, we ended a 27-year drought by forming a government in Delhi. Now, it's Tamil Nadu and Bengal's turn." He challenged Stalin to release a report card on election manifesto. "DMK hasn't fulfilled even 60% of its manifesto. It's a 100% failed govt. Due to corruption in illicit liquor, poor people are dying. Caste violence is being instigated in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, and crimes against women and elderly are rising. The CM remains unconcerned," he added. Accusing the DMK govt of trying to rename Thiruparankundram hill as 'Sikandar Hill', he urged all devotees to participate in the June 22 Murugan meet in Madurai. "Stalin always asks, 'What has Modi done for Tamil Nadu?' Under the UPA, the state received ₹1.53 lakh crore in 10 years. Under Modi, it received ₹6.80 lakh crore — including ₹63,000 crore for roads, ₹77,000 crore for railways, and ₹3,500 crore for airports," he said. Praising Tamil Nadu people for their support during the Tiranga Yatras held after Operation Sindoor, Shah said they were no less than in any other part of India. "Madurai has a 3,000-year-old holy heritage. The Murugan meet scheduled for June 22 will show the exit door to the DMK in Tamil Nadu," he said. Earlier, Amit Shah visited the Meenakshi Amman temple and attended the core committee meeting. Chants of 'Aragora,' `Veeravel,' and 'Vertivel,' rent the air as he was welcomed by party cadres at the mandal and district functionary BJP leaders presented him with a symbolic 'Vel'. BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthiran said Shah's visit was a continuation of the momentum generated by 'Operation Sindoor'. Party women's wing national president Vanathi Srinivasan said Madurai was chosen for the meeting as it lies at the heart of Tamil Nadu and is the venue of the upcoming Murugan meet. The pontiff of Madurai Adheenam, Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal, welcomed Amit Shah during his temple visit and submitted a representation to him.
