Regional Environmental Ties Strengthened At ASOEN-36 Meeting In KL
The meeting featured three key dialogue sessions - the 19th ASEAN-Japan Dialogue on Environmental Cooperation, the 5th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change, and the ASEAN-European Union (EU) High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), these dialogues serve as strategic platforms to enhance regional cooperation between ASEAN member states and dialogue partners in addressing environmental and climate challenges collectively and effectively.
'Key topics discussed included the progress status of the Strategic Programme for ASEAN Environment and Climate (SPACE). This initiative was developed to address three pressing environmental challenges in the ASEAN region — climate change, pollution control and biodiversity conservation.
'Through these discussions, various programmes and initiatives were identified to support the implementation of SPACE towards sustainable development in the region, such as the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris (RKC-MPD) (ERIA) and the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan (ACCSAP),' the statement said.
NRES added that discussions also emphasised efforts to control marine litter through the implementation of joint programmes under the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP-MALI).
The action plan reflects the strong commitment and cooperation among ASEAN countries to enhance integrated marine waste management efforts at the regional level.
In a move to reinforce regional collaboration towards transitioning to a circular economy, NRES announced that the ASEAN Circular Economy Forum (ACEF) 2025 will be hosted in Malaysia this October, with support from the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI).
This forum serves as a strategic platform for formulating and coordinating approaches for the transition to a circular economy through national policies and regional initiatives aligned with sustainable development goals.

Works minister denies viral RM26mil gratuity payment letter
KUALA LUMPUR: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied the authenticity of a letter dated July 28, 2025, which went viral on social media, purportedly from the ministry regarding a gratuity payment to an individual. He said that the letter was fake and was never issued by the ministry or himself. "The ministry never issued any official invitation for such a gratuity payment ceremony. As such, I advise the public not to be deceived by such documents, which clearly contain elements of fraud and impersonation," he said. He said the ministry is working closely with the authorities to investigation the matter. The public is urged to verify any suspicious documents or communications allegedly from the ministry through its official website at or by calling the official hotline. "Overall, as Europeans, we must become stronger," Klingbeil said in Washington ahead of a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. "Then we can also stand up to the U.S. with more self-confidence. Not against the U.S., but in dialogue with the U.S." Klingbeil said there needed to be a quick solution to the trade conflict with the U.S. as companies needed planning certainty. "Even though I am not the one negotiating today — that is the task of the European Commission — a close line of communication between me and Scott Bessent can help clarify things," he said, emphasizing the importance of the Transatlantic relationship. Apart from tariffs, Klingbeil and Bessent will discuss how to deal with cheap Chinese goods that are flooding the markets in both the U.S. and Europe, as well as the G20 presidency that the U.S. will take at the end of the year. "I believe it is important that we, from the German side, keep sending a clear signal: We want to work closely with the American government, we seek dialogue, we do not shy away from difficult topics and are looking at how we can solve problems together," Klingbeil said. The EU's trade deal with Trump in July was greeted with a mix of relief and anger, with tariffs set at 15% for most products but negotiations continuing for certain sectors, including steel and aluminium, which carry tariffs of 50%. Klingbeil would advocate for a quota system on steel exports to be included in the trade deal, he told reporters. Moscow ready to welcome arrival of Sultan Ibrahim for state visit
MOSCOW: Moscow is ready to welcome the arrival of His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia who will begin his maiden state visit to Russia starting Tuesday (Aug 5) until August 10. Malaysian Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai said Sultan Ibrahim expressed hope that the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (Aug 6) could open a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia bilateral relations. "His Majesty also expressed hope that the two leaders can hold productive discussions, especially on matters of mutual interest," he told Bernama here. Cheong said Sultan Ibrahim also admired the historical and technological values in Russia, and had even established many interactions with the country in the fields of trade and investment since His Majesty's reign as the Sultan of Johor. "His Majesty also shares the same interests as President Putin, such as horse riding," he said. This visit at the invitation of President Putin is considered historic and meaningful because it is the first state visit by a Malaysian Head of State to Russia since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967. Two locations for the visit in Moscow, namely the Russian Automotive Technology Development Center (Nami) and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Center, are also ready to welcome Sultan Ibrahim's arrival. "His Majesty will visit Nami to inspect and explore Russian automotive technology, particularly in the field of research and development. "This visit provides an opportunity for His Majesty to see first-hand the advancement of Russian technology given His Majesty's deep interest in the automotive industry," said Cheong.
