The third edition of the FIDE Women's World Cup is halfway through with the fourth round of the competition set to get underway from Wednesday. The 107-player tournament got underway on 6 July and has been running non-stop until Tuesday, the first 'Free Day' in the itinerary.
And out of the 16 players who will be in action in the fourth round that starts on Wednesday, four are Indians. Grandmasters Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali and International Master Divya Deshmukh have kept the tricolour flying high so far in Batumi, Georgia, and each of them will be hopeful of going the distance in the tournament in order to qualify for next year's Candidates Tournament.

The top three finishers in the ongoing World Cup, after all, will book their place in the eight-player tournament next year. And with four Indians still in the competition, there's hope that at least a couple of them book their places via the World Cup route, if not through other methods.
Ahead of the fourth round of the 2025 Women's Chess World Cup, we take a look at how all the Indians in action have fared so far in the tournament, including the ones knocked out in the third round and earlier:
Still in contention: Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh
Each of the four Indians still in the competition were among the top 21 seeds who had received a first-round bye and went straight into the second round.
Vaishali was brought in as a replacement for Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva after the latter withdrew from the tournament, and started her campaign with a 2-0 victory over Canada's Maili-Jade Ouellet before facing stiffer competition from USA's Carissa Yip, who held her to four consecutive draws before the 24-year-old prevailed in the tie-breaks.

Harika, meanwhile, started her campaign with a victory over PV Nandhidhaa in an all-Indian clash – beating her in the second game after the first one ended in a draw. And like Vaishali, Harika played out four consecutive stalemates in her third-round meeting, with Greece's Stavroula Tsolakidou, before advancing with back-to-back wins in the 10+10 rapid games.

Humpy, the top-seeded Indian in the tournament at fourth, and Divya have had relatively simpler routes to the fourth round, winning both of their matches so far by 1.5-0.5 scorelines and not playing a single tie-break game so far.
Reigning women's rapid world champion Humpy defeated Uzbekistan's Afruza Khamdamova in the second round followed by Klaudia Kulon in the third. Divya, on the other hand, has defeated Georgia's Kesaria Mgeladze and Serbia's Teodora Injac in the second and third round respectively.
Eliminated: Vantika Agrawal, PV Nandhidhaa, Priyanka K, Priya Rout and Kiran Manisha Mohanty
Vantika's performance has been one of the highlights of the tournament so far, even if she bowed out with a 3.5-2.5 defeat against seventh-seeded Russian GM Kateryna Lagno in the third round.
The 23-year-old International Master, after all, had stunned former world champion Anna Ushenina 4.5-3.5 in the second round in a major upset, beating the Ukrainian in the opening Classical game and eventually prevailing in the tie-breaks after her opponent fought back.
Vantika had earlier opened her campaign with a 1.5-0.5 victory over Turkmenistan's Lala Shohradova.
The trio of Nandidhaa, Priyanka and Priya bowed out in the second round – Nandidhaa losing to compatriot Harika and Priyanka and Priya losing against Kulon and Alexandra Kosteniuk respectively.

Oval curator's double standards caught on camera after spat with Gautam Gambhir; here's what happened on eve of 5th Test

A day after he had an ugly spat with Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir, The Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis was caught on camera with no such instructions for the England players and support staff on the eve of the fifth and final Test, which starts on July 31. The incident stemmed on Monday, during India's optional training session, when Fortis asked the Indian management to step away from the pitch side which is to be used for the final Test and didn't allow the visitors to have a good look at the surface. Such was the heated altercation, that Gambhir was caught on camera pointing fingers at Fortis, and saying, 'You are just a groundsman. You don't tell us what we can do.' The altercation continued for a good four-five minutes, with Gambhir's voice echoing around the Oval. 'You shouldn't have used that word. You can't talk like that.' What irked the Indian management, and Gambhir in particular was when Fortis asked the Indians to stay away at least 2.5 metres, according to batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. However, the pictures were completely on Wednesday as Fortis was seen having a laugh with England captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum on the pitch side. Later on the day, England batters Ollie Pope and Joe Root were also allowed to spent almost five minutes on the pitch and do shadow practice, something that wasn't allowed to the Indians, clearly showing Fortis' double standards. Meanwhile, England made as many as four changes in their playing XI for the fifth Test, including Stokes, who has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury. Also missing out are spinner Liam Dawson and pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse. England have included Jacob Bethell, who will bat at No.6 along with bowlers Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue.

We Are Preparing For Pakistan, Dont Want To Give Excuses Later: India Head Coach Reacts On Asia Cup 2025 Fixture

After a disappointing Pro League campaign in Europe, the Indian men's hockey team has returned to full-strength training with renewed focus. The players have been training in Bengaluru for the past two weeks as they prepare for the upcoming tour of Australia, keeping the Asia Cup in mind, which is scheduled next month in Rajgir. Although the squad for the Australia tour has already been finalized, trials for the Asia Cup will take place on Friday. Head coach Craig Fulton is set to finalise his 18-member squad for the World Cup qualifying tournament. "It's going good and it's nice to have the India A group back as well. I expect good competition and we are excited about the Asia Cup, that's the main priority for the year. We specifically chose Australia to tour for that reason (tougher opponents than the teams in Asia Cup) because we want to make sure we have covered all bases. To play a top team like Australia, from a physical and a tactical point of view, it will highlight quite quickly if we are on track or not," said Fulton. "It's not always easy; we had a tough time when we went there the last time, but 3 to 4 months later, we beat Australia for the first time (in Olympics). That's the ideal scenario, to play someone better than you and then close the gap between where you started and where you finished," he added after the team's training session on Tuesday. The India A team also had mixed outcomes on its European tour, but Fulton emphasized that the results were part of a larger development framework. With the India A, it's all about development. They are not there to win games against Holland, Belgium, and England. At the same time, we are looking at developing the next group of talented athletes, but they need good games, and they need to be tested. I think we really got a good balance of seeing that. "We just want to create more depth because what happens now with the Under-21s? They finish the World Cup, they can't come straight into the senior group, where do they go? This squad is for that and then it's always really competitive. Whoever comes in is better than what's currently going out and that's how we are trying to manage that programme," he added. Fulton is also focused on preparing for India's Asia Cup rivals and remains cautious about the unpredictability of participation "I'm preparing for Pakistan, and that's how we're approaching it. The worst thing to do is not prepare, and if they arrive, then use the excuse, 'Oh, we didn't think they were coming," he concluded.
