The Union Home Ministry has been tasked with "coordinating activities for further progression" of ex-Agniveers after their term with the armed forces ends, according to a government notification.The Centre amended the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961 by the Gazette notification on Monday.The amendment has inserted a new point in the second schedule under the Department of States of the Union Home Ministry "coordinating activities for further progression of Ex-Agniveers", the notification said.With this amendment, the work relating to coordinating activities for further progression of ex-Agniveer has been assigned to the Union Home Ministry, sources said.For coordinating and monitoring further progression of ex-Agniveers, there will be an online portal, they said.The MHA will coordinate with various ministries and departments of government of India and also with state and UT governments to facilitate career progression of Agniveers who exit after completing four years in the armed forces.In June 2022, the government rolled out the Agnipath recruitment scheme with an aim to bring down the age profile of the three services.Under the scheme, candidates between the age bracket of 17-and-half years and 21 who get selected are enrolled in Army, Air Force and Navy as Agniveers for a period of four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years while the remaining 75 per cent exit.The government has already reserved 10 per cent of jobs for ex-Agniveers in all future appointments of constables in the 11-lakh-strong Central Armed Police Forces like CRPF, BSF, CISF, SSB, etc.The CAPFs recruit around 10-12 thousand personnel in constable ranks.No physical test would be required for recruitment of the former Agniveers into the paramilitary forces as such tests have already been done by the Army. They will just need a physical fitness certificate, officials had said.Various central government agencies and departments have also announced plans to recruit former Agniveers.

Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police have arrested Bijender Yadav, a trader at Sahibabad vegetable market, for allegedly making insulting remarks against a woman, the wife of a government officer, said officials on Wednesday. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit has said that trader Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now. 'Yadav, named in the FIR, was arrested on Tuesday under section 151 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) (to prevent the commission of cognizable offences). The FIR was lodged by the woman. However, even after a lot of persuasion, she or her husband has not come to the police to provide their statements so far. An investigation is underway,' said assistant commissioner of police (Sahibabad circle) Shweta Yadav. The woman alleged in her FIR that Yadav allegedly gave a speech to the Sahibabad vegetable market traders on August 11, and also passed insulting remarks against her and her husband. The incidents later took an ugly turn, and a group of men allegedly opened fire at traders, leaving two men injured. Several purported videos of the speech, firing and violence also went viral on the social media. Later, eight suspects of a group were arrested on August 11 evening for rioting, attempted murder, and violence. Earlier, Yadav, who is also ex-Congress district president, told HT that due to traders' harassment he had made the remarks. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit said that Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now.

No physical tests for Agniveers during police, forest recruitment drives: Haryana govt
Chandigarh: The Haryana govt has decided to provide the benefit of horizontal reservation in direct recruitment to resident ex-Agniveers of the state. After detailed deliberations on the matter, a policy was formulated to provide reservation for ex-Agniveers in various state services. A letter in this regard was issued by chief secretary Anurag Rastogi. According to this policy, ex-Agniveers will get 1 percent horizontal reservation in Group-B posts related to skill expertise and 5 percent in Group-C posts (excluding some specified categories). In the home department, 20 percent reservation will be given for the posts of police constables. Similarly, 10 percent reservation has been fixed for the posts of forest guard in the environment, forest and wildlife department, warder in the jail department, and mining guard in the mines and geology department. To ensure fair distribution among all social categories, reservation will be applied at fixed roster points. Selection will be purely on the basis of merit, and ex-Agniveers will be selected against reserved posts within their respective vertical categories. If suitable ex-Agniveers are not available, the vacant posts will be filled by eligible candidates of the concerned category. They will also be exempted from skill-related tests for which they received training during their military service. However, they will be required to appear in the written examination prescribed by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission for the advertised posts. US judge rejects Trump administration request to unseal Epstein grand jury records
A federal judge on Wednesday denied the Justice Department's request to release grand jury transcripts and exhibits from the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, citing longstanding legal protections and the limited scope of the materials compared with the vast investigation file already held by the US District Judge Richard Berman noted that the grand jury records contain only a small portion of the information gathered, describing them as 'merely a hearsay snippet of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged conduct.'
