Derry had a miserable league campaign under new boss Paddy Tally, suffering relegation after finishing bottom of Division One and without a win from their seven games.
They will hope to change the downbeat mood around the county by pulling off a shock and beating in-form Donegal on Sunday.
After winning back-to-back Ulster titles, Derry were stunned by Jim McGuinness' eventual winners in the quarter-finals last year - a few weeks after winning the Division One League title.
Derry's chances of an upset win aren't being helped by an injury crisis with the quartet of Gareth McKinless, Odhran Lynch, Conor McCluskey and Anton Tohill all ruled out of the Ballybofey contest.
Brendan Rogers was a major doubt missing Derry's final two league games after limping out of their defeat to Donegal in Ballyshannon but he has been named to start at full-back.
In addition, Ciaran McFaul, Niall Loughlin and Lachlan Murray were also doubts for this weekend's preliminary-round tie but McFaul and Murray have been named to start with Loughlin named amongst the substitutes.

Thirty-two teams from around the globe will take part in the tournament across 11 cities in the United States, with the month-long action beginning at 01:00 BST on Sunday and ending on 13 July. Advertisement You do not have to wait long until the superstars appear, with teams having finalised their squads for the big kick-off. Inter Miami, fortunate to be included as they won the Major League Soccer Supporters' Shield for the best performance in the MLS regular season - even though LA Galaxy went on to win the actual MLS play-offs and were left out, kick-start the competition on day one. Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi is part of a legendary quartet of ex-Barcelona players at Inter Miami, alongside former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, midfielder Sergio Busquets and left-back Jordi Alba. Defender Sergio Ramos, a World Cup winner with Spain in 2010, is captain of Mexican side Monterrey, while striker Oliver Giroud and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris - who both played in France's World Cup-winning team in 2018 - are in the Los Angeles FC side that will be in the competition after they won a play-off against Mexican side Club America. Fans of the two English teams involved will get an early glimpse of their new signings. The game at the City Ground took place just four days before the club tournament starts in the USA. England captain Harry Kane and midfielders Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher will play in the United States for Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid respectively. Real will have England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold available for the tournament after they paid Liverpool £8.4m to sign him a month before his contract with the Reds expired. Advertisement Chelsea qualified via winning the Champions League in 2021, while Manchester City's success two years later also earned them a spot - although 2025 Premier League champions Liverpool and Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal have not made the cut. Needless to say, the European teams are packed full of former Premier League players. Numerous former Chelsea players will be there - including Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger at Real Madrid and Cesar Azpilicueta at Atletico Madrid, whose squad also includes Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, who moved from Manchester City in a deal worth £81.5m last summer. While the tournament will include Messi and Mbappe, there will be no Cristiano Ronaldo as there is only one team from Saudi Arabia and that is Al-Hilal, who won the 2021 AFC Champions League. Ronaldo's Al-Nassr team would still have qualified had they won that tournament in 2023-24, but lost in the quarter-finals. Chelsea leave £179m quartet out of Club World Cup squad
Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Axel Disasi and Ben Chilwell have been left out of Chelsea's 28-man squad for the Fifa Club World Cup. The quartet cost the Blues about £179m in transfer fees and all ended last season out on loan. MK Dons sign Hepburn-Murphy from Crawley
MK Dons have signed Crawley Town forward Rushian Hepburn-Murphy for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old, who began his career at Aston Villa, scored 11 goals in 46 games for Crawley last season, including four in their last three. Advertisement He left Villa for Israeli side Pafos in 2020 and spent two years there before joining Swindon Town and then Crawley last summer. "Rushian is a player I have watched over many seasons, and I like the qualities he can add to this team," said Dons boss Paul Warne. "He's somebody who wants to kick on with his career, he will be an exciting addition for now and in the future." The deal was completed before Tuesday's 19:00 BST deadline and he is the second player to move to Stadium: MK so far this summer following former Derby County winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. "For me, this club should never be in League Two - who wouldn't want to play here and get back up the leagues as quick as possible," Hepburn-Murphy said. His contract details have not been disclosed.
