Going on holiday? Here's how to make sure your trip is sustainable
But with so many green claims floating around, it's hard to know who is really providing sustainable travel and who is just greenwashing. A recent report shows that 53% of green claims are vague, misleading, or unfounded – and half of all green labels offer weak or non-existent verification.
So, how can travellers distinguish genuine sustainability from greenwash that exaggerates environmental claims to attract eco-conscious travellers?

Sustainability certification is a voluntary, third-party assessment that verifies a product, service, or organisation meets certain environmental, social, or ethical standards. These certifications provide a structure to manage, improve and communicate sustainability performance.
More than 100 sustainable certifications promise that they have vetted tourism businesses so you can have a satisfying and guilt-free holiday.
Yet, not all certifications are made equal, as our recent research shows. Most certification schemes audit actions taken, rather than assessing how effective these are.
They assure you that the hotel you are staying in has an environmental policy or that it is progressively reducing some of its negative effects on the environment, but not that their energy or water consumption is well below that of its competitors, for example.
One major challenge is that consumers are not using these labels to inform their buying decisions. Next time you travel, select businesses certified by an organisation with a proven track record of verification and transparency. There are several things a strong certification should do:
First, it should be third-party verified. This ensures that the green claims are independently checked.
Second, it needs specific and clear criteria. Beware of vague sustainability claims, such as 'eco-friendly'. Look for certifications that require transparent reporting on performance for specific environmental actions, such as waste management, or responsible sourcing.
Third, it should go beyond eco-savings. Reducing energy and water consumption saves the hotel money. They should not get a prize for that. Seek evidence of the certification promoting best practice in complex issues like biodiversity conservation and dignity in the workplace.
Examples of sustainable tourism certifications to keep an eye on include Green Key (the largest label in Europe); B Corp (which measures a company's entire social and environmental impact); The Long Run (a promoter of nature conservation); and Fair Trade Tourism (a promoter of fair working conditions). These certifications require businesses to undergo regular audits to maintain them.
In case you are thinking it's not your responsibility to find out who is any good – you are right. The EU Green Claims Directive (due to be implemented by 2026) is a new legislation that requires companies to prove their environmental claims and labels, and ensure they are credible and trustworthy. This directive recognises the greenwash problem and will require certification to be based on assessment of actual performance – in tourism, and every other sector of the economy. The directive applies to any business anywhere in the world that sells to consumers from the EU. Expect fewer, but more respected and recognisable labels, that reduce consumer confusion.
Beyond eco-labels
Certification is only part of the picture. Your next holiday can make a greater contribution to local communities while minimising its harm to the environment. Take the time to consider how your trip can be part of a larger, positive contribution. Here are more ways to ensure that your holiday supports local communities and the environment:
Make sure you travel shorter and stay longer. Research shows that transport is a major part of the carbon footprint of your trip. Fly less (if at all). Choose flights with lower carbon footprints – various booking sites now tell customers the carbon footprint for each flight at the time of purchase. And stay longer so you spend more locally, for that same flight.

Choose tour operators that prioritise locally owned and small suppliers. Buy souvenirs that are made locally, and you can only find in that country. Travel slow – soak in where you are. Hike, cycle, use local transport. You will see more of the real place you are in.
Choose buses and trains over private cars. Rent electric vehicles and select accommodation that provides charging facilities. And enjoy local and seasonal rather than imported food. Eat everything in your plate, rather than create food waste.

Security tightens as Donald Trump tees off at Turnberry
A major security operation is ramping up as Donald Trump begins a four-day private visit in Scotland. The US president arrived at Prestwick Airport on Friday evening and stayed at his luxury golf resort, Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire. Wearing a white "USA" cap and accompanied by his second son Eric, he teed off for a round of golf at about 10:00 on his first morning at the resort. Trump is due to meet UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney over the next few days, as well as opening a second 18-hole course at his estate in Aberdeenshire. The president has said "it's great to be in Scotland" and has praised the leaders of both governments. A number of protests are expected to be held to coincide with the visit, including demonstrations in Edinburgh and Aberdeen later. Questions have already been raised about the scale of the visit and the security implications, with police representatives raising concerns about the costs involved and the impact on staffing. Trump takes time out to open Scottish golf course Journalists, photographers and plane watchers were among the crowds who gathered to see Air Force One touch down at Prestwick just before 20:30 on Friday. Trump was greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray and Warren Stephens, US Ambassador to the UK. The president spoke with journalists before a motorcade made up of more than two dozen vehicles escorted him to Turnberry. A number of roads have been closed in the area while police and military personnel have been carrying out sweeps around the resort. A security checkpoint has been put in place outside the hotel and a large fence has been erected around the course. While security remains tight around Turnberry, some golfers were able to use the Ailsa course from about 07:30 - albeit in windy conditions. Drones and helicopters have also been circling overhead. Trump played his round of golf with three others, including his son Eric, with an entourage that included 15 golf buggies. A round during peak summer season can cost £1,000 at Turnberry. There were no sign of any protesters around the course. Trump waved to photographers who had gathered on a beach dune for a vantage point as he walked to the fourth tee. Trump is expected to meet Starmer and Swinney on Monday while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet the president on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations. The US president will travel back to Washington on Tuesday and is due to return to the UK for an official state visit in September. In his remarks to the press at Prestwick, Trump said European countries need to "get your act together" on migration, and "stop the windmills", referring to wind farms. In 2019, his company Trump International lost a long-running court battle to stop a major wind power development being built in the North Sea off Aberdeen. Trump argued that the project, which included 11 wind turbines, would spoil the view from his golf course at Menie. Swinney has said his meeting with Trump would present an opportunity to "essentially speak out for Scotland" on issues such as trade and the increase of business from the United States in Scotland. The first minister said he would also raise "significant international issues" including "the awfulness of the situation in Gaza". He urged those set to protest against the president's visit to do so "peacefully and to do so within the law". Visits to Scotland by sitting US presidents are rare. Queen Elizabeth hosted Dwight D Eisenhower at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire in 1957. George W Bush travelled to Gleneagles in Perthshire for a G8 summit in 2005 and Joe Biden attended a climate conference in Glasgow in 2021. The only other serving president to visit this century is Trump himself in 2018 when he was met by protesters including one flying a paraglider low over Turnberry, breaching the air exclusion zone around the resort. He returned in 2023, two-and-a-half years after he was defeated by Biden. Trump will have an official state visit to the UK in September when he and First Lady Melania Trump will be hosted by King Charles at Windsor Castle in Berkshire. It is the second state visit he has been afforded - second-term US presidents are traditionally not offered state visits and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch, usually at Windsor Castle.

How To Take A Guilt-Free Vacation Instead Of A Guilt Trip In 2025
Guilt-free vacations, devoid of work without a care in the world, have become an endangered species. Summer brings lighter workloads and vacation vibes, yet many workers still struggle to switch off, many because of guilt. Last summer 47% of workers said they felt guilty for taking a vacation. A recent Headway survey of 2,000 employed adults found that one in three feel guilty for slowing down this summer, even when it's expected. And nearly half of workers feel guilty both for working on vacation and for not working, revealing a no-win burnout loop many can't escape. Experts to the rescue on five ways to take a guilt-free vacation. 5 Ways To Unplug And Take A Guilt-Free Vacation In the age of AI many employees are afraid to take time off this summer because they're afraid management will judge them as slackers, and they'll be laid off next. In one study, 29% of employees cited layoff fears, making them hesitant to take time off this summer. After witnessing the approximately 1.6 million workers laid off or discharged in May 2025 alone and the 8.4 million layoffs and discharges occurring in 2025 so far, employees are afraid of losing their jobs if they visibly show they are prioritizing their well-being. Some workers are staying home, continuing to work through the summer. The tanking economy, jammed airports, travel disruptions, canceled flights and flight delays--plus lost luggage claims up 18%--are causing vacationers to rethink how they want to spend summer vacations. Others are taking workcations, and still others are taking "quiet vacations"--workarounds motivated primarily by fear, leading employees to take vacations on the downlow. The Headway study reported that working on vacation has become the gold standard such that 66% of employees struggle to fully disconnect from work. And nearly half (49%) feel guilty if they don't check in or sacrifice free time for their team. As a result, 52% report burnout or depression, while two-thirds say their 'always-on' mentality has led to physical issues like headaches or chronic pain. But no one should feel they must fake sick or feel guilty for taking time off from hard work that they're contractually entitled to have. Truth be told, we should be fitting work around vacations, not fitting vacations around work. 'Time off isn't indulgent; it's essential,' says Cindy Cavoto, certified productivity coach at the Headway app. 'Burnout stifles productivity, so if you're planning a summer vacation, here's how you can log off, chill out and leave the guilt at home.' Are you one of the 47% of Americans refusing vacations altogether, because it's too stressful to plan a big getaway. Or are you concerned you might send corporate honchos the image you're not a team player? If so, the five go-to tips Cavoto gave me for cutting yourself some slack, switching off and enjoying summer, guilt-free vibes might be your cup of tea. 'As the temperature rises, our productivity dips. We sit in our stuffy offices pretending to work, only to feel frustrated when nothing gets ticked off the to-do list,' according to Cavato, who asks, 'What's the point?' She advocates ditching the shirt, grabbing your sunglasses and making the most of the sunshine. When the sun dips and the heat subsides in the evening, Cavato says you can pick up the slack and get far more done, plus, you won't feel like summer has passed you by. Before you swap meetings for margaritas and deadlines for deckchairs, Cavoto recommends that you create a short handover document. 'It doesn't need to be anything detailed or fancy,' she told me. 'Just a clear, simple rundown of what you're working on and who should pick up each task while you're away. 'It will keep projects moving without you and ensure important tasks aren't forgotten, so you can stop checking in with the office and focus on checking out the cocktail menu.' If you're like most people, you schedule your workday down to the most minute detail. So Covato asks, 'Why not plan your vacation with the same precision?' She adds if unplugging completely feels impossible, book an hour each morning to answer emails and check in with colleagues." She's an advocate of setting a timer and answering what matters most. Once the hour's over, she suggests logging off and muting your notifications. And for the rest of the day you end by blocking off for rest and relaxation and stick to it like you would your office calendar. 'We've been trained to think of time off as time wasted, but burnout isn't productive, Cavato insists. 'You can struggle through each day at 75% or book a vacation, recharge and return at 100%." She explains that rest resets your brain and refuels your body, so even with the time off, you end up getting more done overall. 'You need to change your mindset, stop treating rest like a guilty pleasure and start seeing it for what it is: a vital part of long-term, sustainable productivity.' Cavato points out that nothing wrecks vacation plans like a last-minute meeting that dumps a new project in your lap or raises a problem that urgently needs fixing. That leaves you spending your whole vacation thinking about everything you need to do once you get back. 'The fix? Block off your last day in the office,' Cavato advises. 'Use it to tie up any loose ends, clear your inbox and get your to-do list in order so work doesn't cloud your summer vacation.' A Final Wrap On Taking A Guilt-Free Vacation Work is part of your life, not all of your life. Try to work at not working. Ask yourself, 'Why do I deny myself time away from work? What am I doing to my mind and body when I don't take time off from the job? Why can't I give myself a break once in a while?' If you believe what you do is never enough, it can make you pile on more tasks. Examine your own tendencies to create stress for yourself and to deprive yourself of healthy self-care. It might lead you to insight and healthy changes so you give yourself the freedom to take a guilt-free vacation.

WATCH: what YouTuber Turd Towns has to say about Fenland
Two Fenland towns have come under attack by a YouTuber who specialises in videos on towns across the country - with one winning the unwanted title of the worst in Cambridgeshire. Known as Turd Towns, the YouTuber told the Cambs Times and Wisbech Standard that he spent just over a week in Cambridgeshire visiting as many towns, cities, and even villages as he could. Unwilling to reveal his real name or exact location in the West Country Turdy (as he signs himself in emails), explained he started his videos way back in 2011, but has really been focused on creating one for each county since 2019. He claims that his work has inspired many other YouTubers who create similar videos on places up and down the country. His recent visit to Cambridgeshire means he has now been to all the East Anglian counties, and it is fair to say he was not totally unimpressed by what he discovered here. He said he always spends time researching a county before visiting and draws up a list of places to go before he arrives. His visits can also change his view of a place. For instance, March was on his list for the Cambridgeshire video, but when he got there, he found it was "half-way decent" and said he was impressed with the way the town centre looked. However, he is pretty scathing in his assessment of what he lists as the top five Turd Towns in Cambridgeshire. Turdy said he had never felt so unwelcome as he did walking down Norfolk Street in Wisbech. (Image: Turd Towns) Two Fenland towns make the top five, with one taking the top slot for the whole county, with Turdy describing it as "intimidating" and with "nothing good" to say about it. He did not hold back when talking about Wisbech, and he said: "I will never come back here again. Turdy continued: "My first impression was 'oh wow, it's like Bridgewater in Somerset'. "But what an intimidating place this is, and I don't often say that. In terms of Cambridgeshire, this place is bad, really, really bad." Turd Towns was impressed with the beauty of some of the architecture in Wisbech. (Image: Turd Towns) He described shooting the video on a Tuesday and being shocked at how many people seemed to be sitting around "doing nothing" and not seeming to have jobs with "huge" groups of people sitting around outside cafes and in the town centre. "If I were a girl, I wouldn't want to walk alone, that's just what you want in the centre of your town. A place so shifty you can't even use it, but to be honest, I didn't even see anything worth using anyway," he said. He goes on to talk about Norfolk Street and said: "It is a horrible, slum-feeling street, everything was tattered. I have never felt so unwelcome in a place." Turdy adds: "There's a strange electric tension in the air here, something is going to happen if it continues this way. Wisbech is officially the second most poorly integrated town in the UK." Turdy was not impressed by Chatteris and said he would hate to live there. (Image: Turd Towns) He talks about the crime levels and says Wisbech has a worse record than Peterborough city centre. And he concludes: "I left feeling extremely angry, it's not even funny. "It's grim, the people are really rude, it resembles Bridgewater, it smells strongly of sewage drifting across a dead animal carcass, and your neck hurts from watching your back constantly." The second Fenland town he lists is Chatteris. Turdy was shocked by the number of boarded up and derelict properties there were in Chatteris. (Image: Turd Towns) It was ranked third, and Turdy did not hold back describing it as a "post-apocalyptic wasteland" where residents walk around in a "zombiefied state". He said: "Everything is either trashed or on the verge of collapse. You would expect the odd boarded-up building even in the best of places, but this town is seriously taking the urine and dumping it all over the bathroom floor." Turdy suggests Chatteris could have been used as the backdrop for the recent 28 Days Later film, and describes the high street as the "worst I have ever seen for a town this size". He continues: "Nobody wants to be here, but it is not too far from the bigger cities." RECOMMENDED READING: Residents consider legal action after developer blocks gates On a positive note, he says Chatteris "surprisingly" has the second-lowest crime rate in the county. But adds: "Possibly because they closed the police station, suspiciously the crime rate has fallen year on year since the police station closed." Turdy continues, however, by saying: "I was surprised how grim and depressing it was here." And concludes he would rather "eat my own spleen" than live in Chatteris. His overall view of Cambridgeshire was that it was a "mixed bag" with plenty of beauty, although nothing compared to Norfolk and Suffolk.
