Use of AI likely to help enhance sugarcane production by 30%, say expert
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could bring down the need of water in sugarcane farming by 50 per cent and increase the per acre produce by nearly 30 per cent, an expert in the field said on Wednesday. Notably, a meeting was recently held in Pune in the presence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar where the use of AI in sugarcane farming was discussed. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Vasantdada Sugar Institute and Agricultural Development Trust was signed to explore ways to ensure this technology reaches as many farmers as possible. "Microsoft has already worked for a long time on the use of AI for sugarcane cultivation and is assuring 30 per cent growth in sugarcane production and curtailing water usage (in its farming) to half. This will help to run the sugar mills for a longer time (more than 110 days) and losses will also be less," Maharashtra State Co-Operative Sugar Factories Federation Ltd director Jayprakash Dandegaonkar told PTI. 'The 40 (23 co-operative and 17 private) sugar mills in Maharashtra which do not owe any debt to the VSI will be included in this project (of AI use in sugarcane cultivation)," he said. A group of 25 sugarcane cultivating farmers in a two-km radius will have a station (automated AI facility) which will report to war rooms of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the VSI, the former state minister said. An amount of Rs 25,000 may be needed initially for the cost incurred by a farmer. The war rooms will alert these farmers in a few seconds about steps to be taken during the cultivation, he said. This technology will work on forecasting, soil testing, watering alerts, limiting the use of pesticides and protecting nutrients of the soil, he added. The tonnage of sugarcane in Maharashtra has gone down, Dandegaonkar pointed out. "Due to less rainfall, the per acre production in the state has come down to 73 tonnes. The use of AI can definitely help us to reach at least 150 tonnes per acre in the near period," he said. "Farmers need to install drips in their fields for this (irrigation). We can expect the first such station (automated AI facility) installed and put into operation by August-end or the first week of September," he added. Tesla In India: EV Giant Leases 24,565 Sqft Warehouse In Mumbai's Kurla For Over Rs 24 Crore
The lease, registered on May 16, 2025, carries a five-year lock-in period ending April 19, 2030. Elon Musk's Tesla India Motor and Energy Pvt Ltd has leased a 24,565 sq ft warehouse at Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai's Kurla West, marking another significant step in the electric vehicle (EV) maker's India entry. The five-year lease deal is valued at Rs 24.38 crore, according to a Hindustan Times report citing property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix. The leased premises comprise two ground-floor units with a combined carpet area of over 18,000 sq ft and a chargeable area exceeding 24,000 sq ft. The lease, registered on May 16, 2025, carries a five-year lock-in period ending April 19, 2030. Tesla has also secured 20 parking spots as part of the agreement. The licence period officially begins on April 20, 2025, while the chargeable licence period starts from June 1, 2025. Tesla will initially pay a monthly rent of over Rs 37.53 lakh in the first year, which will rise 5% annually over the term. The company is also liable to pay Rs 1.62 crore in common area maintenance charges and has deposited Rs 2.25 crore as a security amount. Abhishek Kiran Gupta, CEO of CRE Matrix, described the deal as more than a real estate transaction. 'Tesla's India entry is taking shape through a deliberate, multi-city rollout — from its office in Pune to flagship showrooms in BKC and Delhi-NCR, co-working presence in BKC, and now a strategic warehousing facility in Kurla West, Mumbai," Gupta said. 'At Rs 153 per sq ft, this lease underlines Tesla's intent to build a robust EV ecosystem anchored by prime logistics and commercial assets," he added. The Kurla warehouse is located approximately 4 km from the U.S. Consulate in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), keeping Tesla's assets within a tightly knit 10-km commercial corridor. Tesla's Kurla lease follows a string of real estate moves in Mumbai this year. In March 2025, the company leased a 4,000 sq ft auto showroom in Maker Maxity on North Avenue, BKC — one of India's priciest commercial addresses — for Rs 23.38 crore over five years. The rent of Rs 881 per sq ft set a national record, making it the costliest showroom lease in India to date. In April 2025, Tesla also secured 30 seats in a managed office space near BKC at a monthly rental of Rs 3 lakh. Despite these aggressive real estate acquisitions, the company appears cautious about establishing manufacturing operations in India. Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy recently said Tesla has no current plans to set up production units in the country and is instead focused on expanding its retail and office presence.

Pakistan eyeing German missile shield used in Ukraine after BrahMos proves too fast for Chinese systems: Report
Pakistan is reportedly exploring the option of acquiring an advanced air defence system from a German company to counter supersonic cruise missiles , such as India's BrahMos , which have proven highly effective against Pakistan's existing Chinese-made HQ-16 and HQ-9 systems. According to media reports, the system has already been inducted into the Ukrainian armed forces. Last month, Ukraine claimed that the advanced air defence system successfully shot down over 60 targets since its initial deployment last year.. IRIS-T SLM shows effectiveness against supersonic cruise missiles The IRIS-T SLM system, developed by Diehl Defence , has reportedly been very successful in Ukraine, particularly against Russian P-800 Oniks missiles that are similar in performance to the BrahMos. The system was originally meant for Egypt, which had signed a deal for ten batteries, but some of the units were redirected to Ukraine during the ongoing war. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users Don't Forget To Do This Before Wednesday Read More Undo Introduced in 1990, the IRIS-T SLM has undergone multiple upgrades. It includes a radar, an operations centre, and multiple launchers—each mounted on a compact 20-foot frame. This modular design allows for easier deployment. The cost of one complete unit is estimated at around $200 million. The country is facing severe economic challenges and has repeatedly sought help from global financial institutions. In the last month alone, Pakistan secured an $800 million loan from the Asian Development Bank and a $1 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund. Live Events Despite its fiscal crisis, the Pakistani government cancelled development projects worth 1,000 billion Pakistani rupees but raised the defence budget by 18%, according to a report by India Today. India objects to defence spending amid international loans India has raised objections to the increase in Pakistan's defence budget while receiving loans from global agencies. It has claimed, 'the loan amount would be used for terror financing rather than their intended use for development.' German defence ties span both sides of the subcontinent While Pakistan is exploring a deal for IRIS-T SLM from Germany, Diehl Defence is also a partner of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems that is working on an Indian defence project. The two companies are working together to supply an Interactive Defence and Attack System (IDAS) for six submarines being developed under India's Rs 70,000 crore Project 75I for the Indian Navy.
