Tecno's Spark Slim Phone at MWC 2025 Is Nothing Short of a Marvel

Yahoo07-03-2025

Amid rumors about a thinner iPhone, Tecno has unveiled a phone concept called the Spark Slim that's skinnier than a pencil. I got to hold it at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and it's certainly the lightest and thinnest phone I've ever encountered (the company says it's just 146 grams).
Typically, a narrower phone could mean compromising on things like battery life and camera, both of which phone buyers still rank among their highest priorities. But Tecno says the Spark Slim has a 5,200-mAh battery and two 50-megapixel cameras, one wide and one ultrawide.
And if you're nervous about sitting on your phone and inadvertently turning it into a foldable, the company said not to worry, as the Spark Slim would use Corning's Gorilla Glass on the display and feature options for a ceramic or stainless steel backing. Tecno said that storage has yet to be determined since this is still just a concept.
The company also showed off another concept called the Phantom Ultimate 2, a tri-fold phone that's 11 millimeters wide when folded and 3.5mm at its thinnest when unfolded. Its unfurled display measures 10 inches. Tecno says development on this device is so early that the company doesn't have any battery capacity or storage specs to share.
Thin phones are certainly having a moment, with the reveal of Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge in January and the release of Oppo's superslim foldable, the Find N5. Apple is also said to be developing an "iPhone 17 Slim" that could be released in the fall. Whether the Tecno Spark Slim joins the party of real-world devices remains to be seen, but perhaps those chances aren't as slim as they may once have been.

The Magnificent Seven Stocks Staged a Blistering May Rally. What's Next?

The Magnificent Seven gained more than 13% last month, making the group of big tech stocks one of the best-performing corners of financial markets in May. The group is still trading in the red for the year, but stocks could get a boost from Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference and Tesla's scheduled robotaxi rollout this month. After rebounding from their post-"Liberation Day" slump, tech valuations have returned to historically high Magnificent Seven had a strong May, but the group remains in the red for 2025. What's next? Taken together, the seven big tech stocks—names like Nvidia (NVDA), Tesla (TSLA), Meta Platforms (META) and more—outperformed dozens of other assets tracked by Deutsche Bank analyst Henry Allen last month. The group saw their stocks rise more than 13% in aggregate in May, their biggest monthly gain in 2 years, according to Allen. Nonetheless, the group remains one of the few corners of global markets lower since the start of the year. Of 32 different sets of investments tracked by Allen—including global equity indexes, government and corporate bonds, foreign exchange indexes, and commodities—only one other asset, crude oil, is negative for the year. Whether the Mag Seven can climb into positive territory this month could depend on what Wall Street thinks of a few upcoming corporate events. Apple (AAPL) will host its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9. The iPhone maker is expected to unveil a software development kit that helps outside developers build features with Apple Intelligence's underlying large language models. That would effectively let Apple outsource some of the work of building AI products for its devices, which could help close the perceived gap in AI capabilities between it and major peers. And around the middle of the month, Tesla (TSLA) is expected to roll out its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in what could be a major test of the company's autonomous vehicle ambitions. Apple and Tesla are the worst-performing stocks in the Mag Seven so far this year, with their shares down about 20% and 16%, respectively. Investor enthusiasm about the companies' progress in some emerging areas seen as vital could help lift their shares. Bank of America analysts on Monday upgraded the information technology sector—home to Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia, and Broadcom (AVGO), the latter a non-Magnificent stock—to neutral from underweight, and downgraded communications services—including Alphabet (GOOG) and Meta—to underweight from neutral. They cited active funds' historically low exposure to IT and high exposure to communications, as well as the communications and media industry's comparatively unpredictable revenue streams. Perceived recession risks have decreased in the last month thanks to easing tensions between the U.S. and China. Lately, though each side has accused the other in recent days of violating the terms of their agreement, demonstrating the fragility of their detente. The Mag Seven's communications companies, Alphabet and Meta, likely have the most recession-proof ad businesses on the internet thanks to the sheer size of their audiences. Yet the tech giants face another risk, according to BofA analysts: Tech companies, they say, addressed elevated interest rates in 2023 by effectively 'shortening duration'—they cut costs, reduced capital expenditures, and increased their cash returns. Today, Alphabet and Meta are locked in an all-out AI arms race, spending tens of billions of dollars a year on AI infrastructure. That spending could tie the companies' hands in the event of a slowdown. Another risk for tech stocks is their price tag, according to BofA. Valuations have declined from their recent highs, but the stocks are still expensive—the Mag Seven's P/E ratio of 33.1 is well above the S&P 500's long-term average—and earnings expectations remain elevated. It sounds like Laurene Powell Jobs has seen prototypes of Jony Ive's mystery AI device — and was impressed

Investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs is a longtime friend of Ive and a financial backer of his design collective, LoveFrom, which he formed after departing Apple in 2019. Ive is now embarking on another technology journey with one of the most recognizable men in Silicon Valley, OpenAI's Sam Altman. Ive and Altman announced May 21 that OpenAI would acquire Ive's hardware startup, IO, to collaborate on an unknown AI tech gadget. Official details are scarce, but a video of Altman and the former Apple design chief said their plan is to create a "family of AI products." One of the perks of knowing Ive and being an investor in both LoveFrom and IO is that Powell Jobs has been one of the first to get an early glimpse at the design and prototyping process of the secretive device. In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Powell Jobs confirmed that she's been able to observe their progress up close. "Just watching something brand new be manifested, it's a wondrous thing to behold," Powell Jobs told FT. She described the evolution of ideas, from design talks that manifest into a tangible prototype that is then improved upon to become "even better." During the same interview, Ive was more tight-lipped about the mystery product that is not a smartphone. The FT interview also sees the two reflecting on their front-row seat — and in Ive's case, his direct contribution to — some of the most transformative technology in the past 30 years, namely the iPhone. While Ive led the design team for the iPhone, Powell Jobs was married to the man Ive once called his " spiritual partner at Apple." Today and in other recent interviews, Ive has expressed a sense of responsibility for some of the less-than-positive side effects made possible by his creations, unpacking his complicated relationship with the iPhone. "If you make something new, if you innovate, there will be consequences unforeseen, and some will be wonderful and some will be harmful," he said. It's clear that there are "dark uses for certain types of technology," Powell Jobs said. "You can only look at the studies being done on teenage girls and on anxiety in young people, and the rise of mental health needs, to understand that we've gone sideways," Powell Jobs told FT. "Certainly, technology wasn't designed to have that result. But that is the sideways result."
