Bollywood star who came from a ‘conservative Muslim family' married 8 years younger Hindu man in 1942; had to flee from Lahore amid rising tension
Zohra met her husband Kameshwar Sehgal at a dance school set up by Uday Shankar in Almora and for her, it was love at first sight. On her 100th birthday, Zohra shared in an interview with Aparna Gupta that she first met Kameshwar, who was eight years younger than her in 1940. He was a painter from Indore and was training in the dance school. 'I found him to be handsome and talented and was bowled over by a Burmese hut he had painted using rice and fungus. Although Kameshwar was eight years my junior, he reciprocated my feelings,' she said. Zohra had already traveled to many countries as a dancer and was starting to establish herself as one of the most renowned classical dancers of the country.
Zohra recalled that they courted each other for two years and finally got married in 1942, during the Quit India Movement. 'We had a civil marriage at Allahabad, but with railway tracks and roads being blocked, we had just one barati,' she recalled. But marrying a Hindu man was no small feat, especially since Zohra came from a 'conservative Muslim family.'

In a recent chat with Hauterrfly, her grand niece Ayesha Raza Mishra shared that Zohra's decisions were quite shocking for the family. 'She decided to get married. She fell in love with a gentleman who was 8 years younger than her and he was a Hindu and she was from a conservative Muslim family. And imagine at that time, I am talking about in the 1930s, to go and talk to your father, say that I am in love and talk about your to-be husband. (They must have asked) 'What does he do?' 'He is a dancer. He is from a different religion, he is younger'. I am saying my family went through these challenges two generations ago,' she shared.
Zohra and Kameshwar were deeply in love with each other and soon after their wedding, they started an institute for performing arts in Lahore, Zoresh. What looked like a beacon of Hindu-Muslim unity when it started, soon became a point of contention in the area as tension would flare up frequently. The couple, with a baby in their arms, moved to Bombay (Mumbai) almost overnight and joined Prithvi Theatres, where Zohra found her passion for acting.
In a 2012 interview with Hindustan Times, Zohra spoke about her husband and described him as a 'versatile talent who was a jack of all trades but who could master none.' She had then shared, 'He was a talented artist, homoeopath, dancer and a cook… but he could not be famous.'
Kameshwar passed away in 1959. Zohra passed away in 2014 at 102.

NDTV Exclusive: Adah Sharma On The Kerala Story Bagging Two National Awards, "We Have The Blessings Of The Victims"
New Delhi: The winners of the 71st National Film Awards were announced on Friday. The Kerala Story bagged two Awards, best director for Sudipto Sen and best cinematography for Prasantanu Mohapatra. In an exclusive interview with NDTV's Hardika Gupta, the actress reacted to the big news and said that she feels "blessed." "Sudipto sir, Vipul sir and Prasanthanu sir didn't think of awards or applause while making the film. It was just to tell the stories of those who didn't have a voice. The audience then became our voice and turned this film into the highest-grossing female film of all time," she shared. Adah added, "We have the blessings of the victims, their families and the audience and now two national awards. I feel blessed. Scenes from the movie impacted people so much that even now, when I meet people at events, airports, they have tears in their eyes when discussing the scenes. As an actor, I got to be part of this historic film and play the role of a lifetime." The film, starring Adah Sharma in the lead role, was released in 2023 and sparked widespread debate across the country over its subject matter. Despite facing criticism, The Kerala Story emerged as a box office success. The film focused on the alleged ISIS recruitment of women in India and was at the centre of political discussions upon its release. Sudipto Sen said the film was often misinterpreted due to the political climate, especially around the use of the word "Muslim." He began developing the project in 2012, and his Kerala-based collaborator Ambika JK had been associated with the research since 2010. The film starred Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani and Siddhi Idnani in key roles. The Kerala Story is currently streaming on Zee5.

Bangladeshi Model Arrested In Kolkata, Fake Aadhaar, Ration Cards Recovered
Kolkata: A Bangladeshi woman was arrested this week in Kolkata for residing in India using fake documents. Shanta Paul was working as a crew member of an airline company and was also a small-time model, the police said after arresting her with fake Indian documents on Tuesday. She entered India in 2023 from Bangladesh's Barisal using a valid passport, and then rented a flat in Kolkata through a property dealer. To sign the rent agreement, she gave fake Indian documents like the Aadhaar card, PAN card, and the voter ID. According to her fake documents, accessed by NDTV, she was born in 1998. She also married Shaik Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, on June 5, according to her marriage certificate accessed by NDTV.
