Toyota's Maverick-Fighting Small Pickup Confirmed, ‘Not a Matter of If' but When

The rugged Toyota Tacoma has stood proud as the best-selling midsize truck in the United States for decades. Now, the company hopes to replicate this success with a smaller, unibody model developed to take the Ford Maverick's lunch money.
'Decisions have been made. The question is when we can slot it in. It's not a matter of 'if,' at this point. We've studied it a lot. We're dedicated to it. We're going to figure out how to make it work,' said Cooper Ericksen, the head of planning and strategy for Toyota's North American division, in an interview with MotorTrend . He added that the truck, whose name hasn't been announced yet, has been in the works for years.
It sounds like Toyota has already laid the truck's foundations. The model will ride on a version of the modular TNGA platform found under most of its existing vehicles, to absolutely no one's surprise, it will be offered with hybrid power. Don't let the car-derived bones fool you, however. Toyota stressed that 'small' and 'tough' aren't mutually exclusive.
'If we do this, it is going to be a Toyota truck. It needs to have certain capabilities and attributes and functionality. It needs to be a workhorse,' Ericksen explained. Luckily, Toyota has proven time and again that it knows how to make a dependable small pickup.
It's too early to provide pricing, but taking on the Maverick head-to-head will require offering a truck with a Maverick-like base price. For context, Ford's smallest pickup starts at $30,535 including destination, while the cheapest Tacoma will set you back $33,085. We're not discounting the possibility that Toyota will try to undercut the Maverick's price by a not-insignificant margin instead of trying to match it.
After all, the brand has high hopes for its entry-level truck: Its data suggests that selling 100,000 to 150,000 units annually isn't far-fetched, and that's only on the American market. Toyota's global presence is much bigger than Ford's, so it could leverage the benefits of economies of scale to bring costs down. Perhaps tellingly, Ericksen said that 'affordability is one of the biggest headwinds' facing the car industry.
We'll need to be patient to find out how Toyota envisions a small truck for the 21st century; We won't see the truck in 2025 and we might not see it in 2026, either. 'My hope is that you will see it very soon, but there are a lot of moving pieces,' Ericksen told MotorTrend . He added that Toyota's engineering team currently has its plate full.

In April this year, Sierra Northern Railway completed tests for a four-axle, hydrogen-fuelled, zero-emission switching locomotive in West Sacramento, California. The development of this locomotive received a $4m investment from the California Energy Commission, with GTI Energy managing the project. This funding supports the design, integration, and demonstration phases, marking an essential contribution to California's clean transportation goals. By Laurie Chen and David Shepardson BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -China has granted temporary export licenses to rare-earth suppliers of the top three U.S. automakers, two sources familiar with the matter said, as supply chain disruptions begin to surface from Beijing's export curbs on those materials. At least some of the licenses are valid for six months, the two sources said, declining to be named because the information is not public. It was not immediately clear what quantity or items are covered by the approval or whether the move signals China is preparing to ease the rare-earths licensing process, which industry groups say is cumbersome and has created a supply bottleneck. China's decision in April to restrict exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has tripped up the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. China's dominance of the critical mineral industry, key to the green energy transition, is increasingly viewed as a key point of leverage for Beijing in its trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump. China produces around 90% of the world's rare earths, and auto industry representatives have warned of increasing threats to production due to their dependency on it for those parts. Suppliers of three big U.S. automakers, General Motors,, Ford and Jeep-maker Stellantis got clearance for some rare earth export licenses on Monday, one of the two sources said. GM and Ford each declined to comment. Stellantis said it is working with suppliers "to ensure an efficient licensing process" and that so far the company has been able to "address immediate production concerns without major disruptions." China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment. China's critical-mineral export controls have become a focus on Trump's criticism of Beijing, which he says has violated the truce reached last month to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. On Thursday, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a lengthy phone call to iron out trade differences. Trump said in social-media post that "there should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products." Both sides said teams will meet again soon. U.S. auto companies are already feeling the impact of the restrictions. Ford shut down production of its Explorer SUV at its Chicago plant for a week in May because of a rare-earth shortage, the company said. The approval for the auto suppliers follows a green light granted to a U.S. electronics firm's suppliers last week and another one issued earlier this week to suppliers of a U.S. non-auto company, the first person said, declining to name the companies. "We have to give the Chinese the benefit of the doubt that they're working through this. It's up to them to show that they are not weaponizing it," said the person. Reuters reported on Wednesday that China has introduced a tracking system for its rare earth magnet sector in a move to improve its control over the sector and crackdown on smuggling. That's the rationale from Premier Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives in adjourning the legislature Thursday for another unusually long summer break , infuriating opposition parties who said the move makes it harder to scrutinize the government's actions. The lengthy recess comes a week after MPPs voted themselves pay increases of 35 per cent with a pension plan and as Ford repeatedly talks about the need for Ontarians to work together in fighting U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. Government House Leader Steve Clark said the break is necessary because the Conservatives passed 10 laws — including the controversial Bill 5 that fast-tracks mining and infrastructure development by bypassing provincial and local rules in which critics call a blank cheque for damage to the environment, endangered species, labour laws and Aboriginal treaties. 'It's been an ambitious sitting,' Clark added in reference to the six weeks MPPs spent at Queen's Park this spring in the wake of the Feb. 27 election. 'The government now is looking for time to implement that policy.' Not so fast, said his New Democrat counterpart John Vanthof, who called Bill 5 a 'case in point' on why the legislature needs more sitting days with more daily question periods, committee hearings and public hearings on proposed legislation. 'When you rush things through the legislature, when you shorten the time the legislature sits, you make bad legislation,' Vanthof told MPPs before the Progressive Conservatives used their majority to pass the motion for a 20-week break, which ends seven days after Thanksgiving. 'It's just actually not wanting to be accountable,' charged Liberal House Leader John Fraser. After MPPs return Oct. 20, they will sit for seven weeks until their Christmas break, meaning the legislature will have been in session for just 13 of 52 weeks this year. During breaks, MPPs typically work in their ridings. For 2026, the legislative calendar has legislators returning from their summer break on a more traditional and earlier timeline, on Sept. 14. Unless that changes.
