Hong Kong residents and tourists will be able to enjoy plenty of discounts, giveaways and other deals when the city celebrates the 28th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule on July 1.

Free transport
Commuters will have a chance to win one of the 71,000 MTR tickets available in a raffle being held on July 1 via the rail operator's mobile app. The tickets are valid until January 2 next year.
The Airport Express will be free for Child Octopus card holders, while those with the JoyYou card, available to residents aged 60 and above, will enjoy half-price fares.
From July 1 to 3, trams trips will be free of charge. Star Ferry fares for journeys between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai will also be free on July 1.

Complimentary ferry tickets will be given out to 200 lucky commuters on the Central-Cheung Chau route, with 100 free tickets also being distributed for the Central-Mui Wo service and the North Point-Hung Hom/Kowloon City route.

The shutdown of Singapore-based airline Jetstar Asia is a sign of turbulent times ahead for budget carriers in the region as they grapple with higher costs and stiffer competition, aviation analysts have said. On Wednesday, Jetstar Asia, the low-cost arm of Australian airline Qantas, announced that it would close down at the end of July. The decision followed a review of the budget airline, which had in recent years been challenged by rising supplier costs, airport fees, aviation charges and competition in the region, Jetstar group said in a statement. Jetstar Asia added that the increase in costs was projected to continue, putting unsustainable pressure on its ability to offer low fares, which was fundamental to its business model. 'Unfortunately, increasing competition in the region, high market capacity and rises in supplier costs and airport fees over recent years mean that we simply can't continue to offer the low fares that we are proud of and committed to,' Jetstar group chief executive Stephanie Tully said. Linus Benjamin Bauer, founder of aviation consultancy BAA & partners, said Qantas was rightly reallocating capital to higher-yield opportunities. 'This is a warning sign. In a post-Covid world, cost discipline and market relevance are non-negotiable. Expect more market exits or strategic retrenchment, especially in fragmented, overserved low-cost carrier markets like Southeast Asia,' he said.

‘Panda fever' created 19% attendance boost at Hong Kong's Ocean Park: official
'Panda fever' has translated into a significant boost in business for Hong Kong's Ocean Park, with the debut of several new bears leading to a 19 per cent surge in attendance year on year since their debut, according to the city's tourism minister. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui also said in a written reply on Wednesday to lawmakers' questions that an additional HK$121 million (US$15.4 million) had been secured from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to upgrade the pandas' enclosures. The move would help solidify Hong Kong's status as a premier panda tourism destination, she added. Hong Kong is home to six giant pandas, who comprise Ying Ying and Le Le, their twin cubs, Jia Jia and De De, and An An and Ke Ke, who were gifted to the city by Beijing to celebrate the 27th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty. An An and Ke Ke made their debut in December 2024, and cubs Jia Jia and De De were unveiled to the public in February of this year. 'They have been well received by both locals and visitors, and Ocean Park's attendance has since then increased by around 19 per cent over the same period last year,' Law said.
