Popular beach 'one of world's most overrated' – 31% of visitors say it's dirty

The UK beach has been slammed by holidaymakers in reviews
Despite the UK's renown for its picturesque coastal retreats, one of its famed beaches has unfortunately found itself on a global list for less than flattering reasons. Bournemouth Beach has been ranked among the world's most overrated beaches, drawing criticism from both British and international tourists.
Cloudwards experts scrutinised TripAdvisor reviews for 200 of the globe's most frequented beaches. They explained their methodology: "We used complaint-related keywords like 'dirty', 'overcrowded', 'long queues', 'noise', and 'disruption' to filter the reviews, then looked at how frequently they were applied to each beach to calculate an overall 'complaint score."

Bournemouth Beach, nestled in Dorset, landed in the top five of this less desirable ranking. The beach is known for its seven-mile stretch of sand, crystal clear waters, and striking cliffs. The beach even boasts its own micro-climate, offering some of the warmest sea temperatures in the UK.

Whether you're lounging on the sand, exploring the pier, savouring local cuisine, or engaging in water sports, there's something for everyone throughout the year. However, this recent study has labelled the beach as "overrated", reports the Express.
Bournemouth beach received a total complaint score of 65.1/100 (with 100 being the worst). The study revealed that 31.7% of reviews claimed the beach is dirty, 52.5% complained it is overcrowded, 10.2% grumbled about long queues, and 5.6% remarked on high noise levels.
However, Bournemouth Beach fared better than some US beaches, with Waikiki Beach in Hawaii earning a complaint score of 100/100, making it the "most complained-about beach worldwide".
The expert's assessment of Waikiki Beach highlighted overcrowding as the main issue (67.3% of complaints), followed by cleanliness concerns (15.9%), and to a lesser extent, long queues and noise.
According to TripAdvisor, Bournemouth beach boasts an average rating of 4.5 bubbles from over 9,000 reviewers. However, a glance at the comments reveals a less rosy picture, with the most recent review (June 2025) being decidedly negative.

The disgruntled visitor wrote: "Dirty rundown, no pride in the area. Also got fined £100 for putting a cigarette on a planter full of buts, no bins, little jobsworth won't be going again, nothing like it used to be."
Another reviewer remarked: "Great beach, but some tourists are animals, leaving litter everywhere. I was helping out with beach clean for Marine Conservation for my daughter and as soon as the beach was done, it was covered in beer cans, plastic debris, vapes, and numerous wet wipes, broken glass, Cigarette ends everywhere."

One visitor expressed their disappointment with Bournemouth's main beach, noting the overcrowding issue. They commented: "We've been to Bournemouth many times and love the area in general but really disappointed with the main beach area on our last visit.
"We'd gone late afternoon, having spent the day at one of the smaller beaches (which was lovely), so I realise the beach and facilities will have taken a hammering over such a busy day, but it was smelly and dirty."

It's a tiny market town, making Sher Khan's national win all the more impressive. The multi-award winning restaurant boasts a 4.7 TripAdvisor rating, based on over 500 reviews, with customers praising its 'friendly reception' and 'tasty food'. One described it as 'Simply the best in Alnwick'. On the menu, you'll find classics like jalfrezi and tandoori chicken alongside a variety of other regional favourites. But if you don't live in the north east, don't worry, plenty of other restaurants have received awards this year. In the North West, Aroma Asian Restaurant in Burnley claimed the crown. The family run restaurant has been creating authentic cuisine since 2007, according to its website and is another highly-lauded establishment on Tripadvisor, with 4.7 stars. Everest Lounge in Market Harborough topped the East Midlands and Lavang in Solihull took the West Midlands award. Spice Valley in Norwich was named the best in the East of England, while Spice Route in Andover won the South East, and Mattancherry in Taunton triumphed in the South West. Aside from the regional accolades, awards were also handed out to the best curry houses in cities across England. Those looking for the best in the capital will have to head to the Masala Inn in Bexleyheath. The small restaurant in southeast London has both takeaway and dine-in options available and is open seven days a week. It'll set you back around £15 for a main course. The restaurant has a 4.7 Tripadvisor rating, based on over 400 reviews. One pleased customer wrote: 'Absolutely wonderful and well spiced food. The staff was unreal and so kind and caring. 'Will definitely be coming back, can't explain how good the food was.' Meanwhile, Spice n Spirits was crowned as Manchester's best. The takeaway is located in Little Hulton, Salford, and has a small dining area but they also have a cozy dine-in spot near Bolton. The menu features a variety of Indian-style street dishes, you'll find starters from around £4 and mains from £10. The restaurant has 4.6 stars on Tripadvisor, full of satisfied customers. One described it as the 'best Indian restaurant in Manchester with spectacular service'. Another wrote it was 'best Indian restaurant for miles', with 'superb food and great service even when very busy'. More Trending The awards ceremony, held on Monday, August 11, at the Eastside Rooms in Birmingham, brought together chefs, restaurateurs, and industry figures from across the country for a night celebrating the diversity of England's curry scene. Irfan Younis, a spokesperson for The English Curry Awards 2025 said: 'It was another memorable event that honoured the dedication and hard work of the nominees and celebrated the rich tapestry of flavours that the curry industry brings to the English culinary landscape. Marbella 'deserted' as tourists stay away from Costa del Sol hotspot

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Marbella, a renowned holiday destination in southern Spain, has seen a decline in visitor numbers as tourists cut back on lavish holidays, with one nationality noticeably absent. Long ingrained in the British public's mind, Marbella transformed from a humble fishing village on the outskirts of Malaga into a bustling tourist hotspot throughout the 20th century. The Marbella Club Hotel, founded by Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg in 1954, put the location on the map as a must-visit spot for Europe's elite. In recent years, it has become synonymous with celebrity glamour and extravagance, attracting bronzed Instagrammers in droves for Champagne spray parties. Despite remaining a favourite among Brits and Love Island contestants alike, it appears that some are beginning to fall out of love with 'Marbs'. This includes one unfortunate holidaymaker who was denied entry to Towie star Elliott Wright's restaurant due to his footwear. This summer saw a drop in tourist numbers on the Costa del Sol, marking the first decrease since the pandemic began. The downturn has been particularly noticeable in Marbella, where Spanish tourist numbers fell by 34% in June, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), reports the Mirror. In July, the city welcomed 68,630 visitors, which is 8,201 fewer than in 2024. The decline in visitors is wreaking havoc across Marbella's hospitality sector, with business owners left wondering how they'll survive financially. "There are days when we feel like we're not holding our heads in our hands from so much work, and others when the restaurant is empty. It's as if people are more restrained when it comes to going out," Yolanda, a waitress at one of the downtown hospitality establishments, told Sur. A retail worker in Marbella informed the publication that Spanish visitors to the resort are arriving with tighter budgets. They attributed this to "how expensive accommodation has become" alongside inadequate public transport links between Malaga and Marbella - which are situated 40 miles apart along the coastline - for the 10% drop in tourist numbers overall this summer. Despite falling visitor numbers, Marbella is hardly experiencing a ghost town atmosphere. Hotel occupancy has climbed to 80.08 percent, with guests staying an average of 3.95 nights - the highest figure recorded since 2016. Laura De Arce, director of tourism for the City Council, commented: "The city continues to attract a traveler profile that values excellence, exclusivity, and a differentiated offering. This not only translates into high occupancy rates but also into strong profitability, confirming Marbella's leadership in the premium tourism sector in the Mediterranean." Earlier this week, readers of the Mirror voiced their opinions on Spain as a holiday spot and expressed concerns about visiting due to recent high-profile protests against overtourism. "The message we are receiving loud and clear from locals, especially in the islands and where we usually visit in Andalucia, is that we should stay away and are not welcome," one gentleman informed us.

American in UK tries fish and chips but is told they've 'made a mistake'

Sarah Renee, an American who moved to the UK, frequently shares her thoughts on British foods and various UK brands. In her most recent review, she chose to sample the classic dish of fish and chips. Fish and chips, an iconic British dish adored by millions, is a staple in school canteens every Friday and countless shops across the nation specialise in this beloved classic. It seems our friends across the pond are also keen to sample this national treasure, including Sarah Renee, an American expat now living in the UK. ‌ Known for her TikTok reviews of British food and popular UK brands like Greggs, SpudBros and Toby Carvery, Sarah recently went on a five-hour journey to Bournemouth to taste the seaside town's famed fish and chips, comparing it to the fare back home in Orange County, Southern California. ‌ At Harry Ramsden's, she ordered a large cod with a regular portion of chips, gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce. ‌ Firstly, she took a bite of the fish, describing the flavour as "incredible" before dipping some into the gravy, mistakenly thinking it was meant for the fish and not just the chips. Finding the combination "unique", she then sampled the curry sauce with the fish, confessing: "I've never heard of curry and fish and chips but I'm gonna try it anyway." Deciding she preferred the fish with curry sauce over gravy, she next tried a chip dunked in gravy, declaring: "That's much better than the one at the Chinese." ‌ Wrapping up her review, Sarah enthused: "Okay this tastes nothing like California fish and chips so this is fantastic. "I'm giving Harry Ramsden a ten out of ten. This is phenomenal." Harry Ramsden's, a renowned fast food chain in the UK, is famed for its fish and chips. ‌ Its Bournemouth branch, situated on the seafront, boasts seating for up to 420 diners. While the restaurant 's signature dish is fish and chips, it also offers a variety of other options, including wholetail scampi, a selection of beef, chicken, cod or halloumi burgers and a classic caesar salad. Sarah's TikTok video has sparked more than 1,900 comments, with several viewers suggesting she should have avoided Harry Ramsden's. ‌ A local from Bournemouth commented: "I'm from Bournemouth, this is the worst fish and chips you can get. It's a chain restaurant, so many better places to go, always go local. Total tourist trap." Another viewer agreed: "Harry Ramsden's is a chain though, it's even better from an independent chippy." A third chimed in: "I hate to tell you this but Harry Ramsden's is the worst fish and chips going, it's a chain. Try Lakeside in Poole, if you're still in the area! It's the best." A fourth remarked: "Harry Ramsden's is not the best way to try British fish and chips as they're a chain." However, one Harry Ramsden's fan defended the chain: "I went to the exact same restaurant twice a couple of weeks ago because it was sooo good."
