221 MPs call for Britain to recognise Palestinian state amid starvation in Gaza
Their letter, co-ordinated by Sarah Champion – Labour chairwoman of the International Development Select Committee, said: 'We are expectant that the outcome of the conference will be the UK Government outlining when and how it will act on its long-standing commitment on a two-state solution; as well as how it will work with international partners to make this a reality.'

Parliamentarians from Labour, the Conservatives, Lib Dems, SNP, Greens, Plaid Cymru, SDLP and independents were among those who signed the letter.
Senior signatories include Labour select committee chairs Liam Byrne and Ruth Cadbury, the Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey, as well as Tory former minister Kit Malthouse.
Ministers have faced growing calls to recognise a Palestinian state immediately amid mounting global anger over the starving population in Gaza.
Sir Keir Starmer said on Friday evening that such a move needed to be part of the 'pathway' to peace in the Middle East.
'That pathway will set out the concrete steps needed to turn the ceasefire so desperately needed, into a lasting peace,' the Prime Minister said.
He added: 'Recognition of a Palestinian state has to be one of those steps. I am unequivocal about that. But it must be part of a wider plan which ultimately results in a two-state solution and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis.
In a statement released on Friday alongside the leaders of France and Germany, the Prime Minister urged 'all parties to bring an end to the conflict by reaching an immediate ceasefire'.
Sir Keir, French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Friedrich Merz also called for Israel to stop restricting the flow of aid into Gaza.

Evyatar David, 24, was taken hostage on October 7, 2023, while attending the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel. He's been held in Gaza ever since, but new video footage of David has been released by Hamas showing him in a tunnel. While digging what he said was his own grave, David was heard saying in the video: 'I haven't eaten for days… I barely got drinking water.' His family said in a statement: 'We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza – a living skeleton, buried alive.' Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, slammed the footage as an attempt to 'pressure Israel'. Israel has come under increased scrutiny as thousands of Gazans have begun to starve, due to a lack of aid allowed in at checkpoints along the border. On October 7, 2023, 251 Israelis were taken hostage by Hamas during a cross-border attack. 49 remain in Gaza, 27 of which are believed to be dead. Elsewhere in Gaza, photos of starving Palestinians, some of them babies, have emerged in the past weeks, sparking public outcry for intervention in the conflict, which is about to enter its third year. Israel has denied any responsibility for what experts have deemed a famine, despite controlling the flow of all aid into the enclave. The UN documented dozens of deaths from malnutrition during the last week of July, citing some who collapsed in the streets while trying to reach food. The desperation for food has led to crowding at the few aid locations in Gaza. 73 people were killed by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) while trying to reach aid. On July 30, blood mixed with flour as the dead were wheeled away in carts after the IDF opened fire at hundreds of Palestinians looking for food at an aid point in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Defence Forces, who control the Zikim Crossing distribution point, admitted firing shots when their soldiers felt 'threatened'. Hours later, more than 48 were dead with hundreds more injured at the main entry point for humanitarian aid to northern Gaza, according to a local hospital. Hamas claimed the shooting lasted around three hours as thousands were funnelled towards the trucks delivering vital aid. More Trending The Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) say Israeli military has turned these humanitarian points into 'killing grounds, deliberately targeting civilians in their most vulnerable state'. In a statement, the IDF said: 'We place utmost importance on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and work to enable and facilitate the transfer of aid in coordination with the international community, and certainly do not intentionally act against humanitarian aid trucks.' What little food remains has been pushed to black-market extremities, as shown by prices shared with Metro by Christian Aid workers on the ground. A 25kg sack of flour is now more expensive than a Michelin-star dinner in Paris, costing as much as £414, compared to £8.80 before the start of the war. Downing Street documents opened at The National Archives also show that the Canadian general brought in to oversee decommissioning almost walked away in 2003 because the IRA was refusing to allow experts to be involved in decommissioning, wouldn't accept the methods the experts wanted to ensure safety, and wouldn't allow the commission to say what arms were destroyed.

Independent leader accused of jumping on Reform bandwagon
Pembrokeshire County Council's main opposition group, the 21-strong Independent Group (IPG), is led by Cllr Huw Murphy; the council itself run by a coalition. The recent July 18 Reform 'social,' held in Carmarthen, attended by Cllr Murphy and it believed at least three other members, was listed as a paid-for members-only event. This raised fears about whether the IPG members were supporting the party, or could even be contemplating joining. Cllr Murphy, who became leader of the IPG last year, confirmed he had attended the event, but had also attended a Plaid Cymru conference and a talk by Mark Drakeford, adding: 'I am not a member of any political party and all meetings I have attended to date I have not spoken; I attend to listen and by listening it's clear that there is a desire for change.' Cllr Murphy later said there was 'no likelihood' of any IPG members defecting to Reform, adding: 'We went, so what? I'm sure some people would say 'good for you' and some would say 'how dare you?'.' Conservative Group member Cllr Aled Thomas said: 'Not content with working with Labour to increase council taxes by nearly 10 per cent [during the 2025-26 budget setting] and advocating for a 12 per cent rise prior to that, the Independent Group have really embarrassed themselves with this latest flip-flop. 'It's hard to take anything seriously from the IPG leader who jumps on whatever the latest populist trend is. Week after week we've heard Cllr Murphy talk about his independence and how he's not swayed by party politics. Yet we find out he and members of his 'independent' group are funding Reform UK. 'Reform UK wants to see Welsh language targets scrapped, and the decimation of our farmers by advocating for hormone treated beef and chlorinated chicken to flood our supermarkets. If that's the type of policies the IPG now stand for, then they should be honest with the constituents they represent.' Pembrokeshire County Council's Labour group said: 'Residents deserve clarity and conviction from those elected to represent them. Instead, what we see from Cllr Murphy is the behaviour of a political chameleon — attending party political events while claiming to be above party politics, and dismissing legitimate concerns as 'so what'. 'The 'independent' group is becoming a real rag-tag opposition group who are happy to jump on any bandwagon whenever one comes along. 'Pembrokeshire voters need to know who or what they will be voting for at the next local elections. It's clear some in the group share Reform's politics but where does that leave the rest of them?' Responding Cllr Murphy said: 'No-one from Labour complained when I attended a meeting when Mark Drakeford was the keynote speaker, but they complain now.' He added: 'It needs to be pointed out the Independent Group is almost the same size as the Pembrokeshire Conservative and Labour Group combined which clearly show how unpopular both parties are with the average Pembrokeshire voter and the omens for both Lab and Tories in 2026 and 2027 appears dire and they would do well to focus on voter concerns than get stressed over what IG councillors do in their spare time.'
