116 affordable housing units purchased from P.E.I. rental market
The Prince Edward Island government says more than 100 affordable housing units have been purchased from the private rental market over the past year as part of a new program.
The province partnered with three non-profit and co-operative housing organizations last year with the goal of increasing affordable housing options.
The province is providing annual funding to the P.E.I. division of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada, and Kings Square Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
The Community Housing Expansion Pilot allows the organizations to purchase existing housing and plan construction for new units.
'By partnering with the community housing sector, we are addressing the critical need for housing solutions for Islanders caught in the 'missing middle'—those who earn too much for social housing but struggle with rising rental costs,' said Premier Rob Lantz in a provincial news release.
'These collaborations allow us to create sustainable, attainable housing options that bridge the gap, ensuring more Islanders can find a place to call home.'
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation notes housing is considered affordable if it costs 30 per cent or less of an annual income.

P.E.I. signs trade agreement with Saskatchewan
P.E.I. and Saskatchewan have signed a memorandum of understanding to reduce trade barriers. (Source: Prince Edward Island) Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to reduce interprovincial trade barriers amid the ongoing tariff dispute with the United States. P.E.I., which signed MOUs with New Brunswick and Ontario earlier this summer, said the agreement with Saskatchewan will strengthen the economic ties between the two provinces. 'The agreement supports a shared commitment to reducing interprovincial trade barriers and aligns with PEI's Interprovincial Trade and Mobility Act,' a news release reads. 'It provides a framework for greater cooperation between the two provinces, focused on recognizing equivalent standards, streamlining regulations, and improving access to employment and business opportunities across jurisdictions.' According to the release, P.E.I. exports of goods to Saskatchewan were valued at more than $13.7 million while the exports of services were estimated at more than $4.9 million. Saskatchewan imports of goods were valued at more than $12 million and their services were valued at $13 million. Provinces across the country have been advocating for reducing interprovincial trade barriers after the United States imposed tariffs on Canada earlier this year. Trump slams Canada's plan to recognize Palestinian state amid trade talks
U.S. President Donald Trump took to his social media platform just after midnight on Thursday to say he is not pleased with Canada announcing it will recognize a Palestinian state (new window) in September if the West Bank's governing body agrees to make certain commitments. Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine, Trump posted on Truth Social (new window) . That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!! Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed earlier on Wednesday that trade negotiations have not been finalized just two days ahead of the deadline. It is possible that [negotiations] may not conclude by the first of August, Carney said at a news conference on Wednesday. But we'll see with the teams there. We're working hard. WATCH | Trade deadline nears: Trump set an Aug. 1 deadline for Canada to reach a trade deal and has threatened to impose a 35 per cent tariff (new window) on goods that don't comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). That rate would apply to Canadian exports currently being tariffed at 25 per cent, under Trump's emergency powers, citing what he says is a national security threat from fentanyl trafficking. The president has been very clear … that there are certain sectors that are strategic, in their judgment, to the United States' economy: aluminum steel, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber, Carney said. The prime minister previously hinted that the Canadian government is in no rush to finalize a deal by Friday, saying last week that his objective is "not to reach a deal whatever it costs (new window) ." On Monday, Carney said in P.E.I. that trade negotiations with the United States are at an "intense phase (new window) ." Tariffs ordered on some copper products On Wednesday, Trump announced that the U.S. would levy a 50 per cent tariff (new window) on copper products such as pipes and wiring, starting Friday. The White House said it would apply only to semi-finished copper products and other products that heavily use copper when being manufactured. Trump suggested last Friday that the U.S. might not reach an agreement (new window) with Canada and that more tariffs could be in store for the country. I think Canada could be one where there's just a tariff, not really a negotiation, Trump told reporters. Canada's top trade negotiators — Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., and Dominic LeBlanc, minister responsible for Canada-U.S trade — have also downplayed (new window) the likelihood of the two countries reaching a deal by Aug. 1. It's important for us to recognize that there is a time when the deal is the right deal, and it's important for us to be in a position to continue negotiating until we get to that point, Hillman said last week. New Brunswick and P.E.I. sign memorandum to reduce internal trade barriers
New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have signed a memorandum of understanding to improve free trade and labour mobility between the two provinces. 'New Brunswick has what the world wants, and this is another step to creating opportunities for our people and products to shine across the country,' said Premier Susan Holt in a news release. 'Prince Edward Island is our much-loved neighbour, and we look forward to having more co-operation across the Confederation Bridge.' The agreement will help reduce red tape, recognize equivalent standards and improve the ability of workers and businesses to move between the two provinces, said the P.E.I. government in a news release. 'New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have always worked closely together,' said P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz. 'This agreement builds on that relationship by making it easier for people to move, work and do business across our shared region.' New Brunswick recently signed similar agreements with Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba. The memorandums come after trade between Canada and the U.S. has seen a decline. P.E.I. says New Brunswick is its second largest importer of goods and third largest importer of services, with the total exports of goods and services valued at $470 million. Total trade between the two provinces is valued at $1.2 billion.
