Kane scores as Bayern thump Spurs in pre-season friendly - World
Harry Kane scored his first goal against his former side as Bayern Munich romped past Tottenham 4-0 at home in a pre-season friendly on Thursday. Kane, who is boyhood club Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 matches, put Bayern in the lead after 12 minutes with a composed penalty box finish. The England captain then had a chance to double Bayern's lead two minutes later when Joao Palhinha, who joined Spurs from Bayern on a season-long loan on Sunday, gave away a penalty. Kane however slipped, blasting his shot well over the bar. It was the first time Kane failed to convert a spot kick since his miss in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France. Kingsley Coman added the home side's second with a superb curling shot from the edge of the box with 61 minutes gone. Bayern teenagers Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare both scored in the dying stages to complete the one-sided victory. Kane joined Bayern in a 100 million euro (£87 million) transfer from Spurs in the summer of 2023. The match was the Europa League winners' last chance to fine tune before next Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash with European champions Paris Saint-Germain. Spurs have had a mixed bag under new coach Thomas Frank this pre-season, beating London rivals Arsenal along with Reading, while being held to draws with Newcastle, Luton Town and Wycombe. 'Playing in CHAN was my childhood dream' – Sudan's 18-year-old Hussein
At just 18 years old, Musa Hussein is already living the dream of millions across Africa. The teenage sensation announced himself on the continental stage by scoring in Sudan's opening match of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, becoming the youngest player in the tournament to find the net. Born in October 2006, Hussein is not just making history — he's making headlines. In this exclusive interview with the young forward shares his thoughts on achieving a lifelong ambition, his admiration for Ivorian star Wilfried Zaha, and his gratitude to Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah, who he calls a 'father figure.' Humble, focused, and fiercely ambitious, Hussein opens up about the pride of wearing the Sudanese jersey, his aspirations for an individual award at CHAN 2024, and his ultimate goal — a move to a top European league. Q&A: Musa Hussein – Sudan National Team Forward You made your debut at CHAN 2024 against Congo. How did it feel to finally play in this tournament? Mousa Hussein: I'm extremely happy to be part of such a major competition. It's the biggest moment of my football career so far. This participation is a huge source of pride for me and my entire family. You scored in your debut match. How did it feel to find the net? What did your teammates, coach, and family say afterwards? Scoring in my very first CHAN match was a great honour. I owe it all to my teammates for their support and encouragement on the pitch. Of course, I hoped the goal would lead us to victory, but that's football. After the match, I received congratulations from everyone — my coach, teammates, and family. It meant a lot to me. At 18, you're the youngest player wearing Sudan's colours. You've featured in CHAN qualifiers, the final tournament, and even World Cup qualifiers. What does that experience mean to you? I owe everything to the Sudanese national teams. They've shaped my football journey — from the U17s to the U20s and now the senior team. Every time I wear the Sudan shirt, I feel a deep sense of pride. My teammates and I dream of reaching the World Cup one day. It's a tough mission, but certainly not impossible. You're nicknamed 'Kanté.' Who gave you that nickname, and do you like it? One of my friends from the city of Kassala gave me that nickname, and it spread quickly. I actually love it and carry it with pride. What's your message to Sudanese fans during CHAN 2024? We promise to give our all to make them proud and to achieve results that match their ambitions. What does playing in the TotalEnergies CHAN tournament mean to you personally? It means everything. Since childhood, I dreamed of playing in a tournament like this and representing my country on such a big stage. Are you targeting a personal award — perhaps top scorer or best young player of the tournament? Absolutely. Winning an individual title while wearing the Sudan shirt would be a huge honour for me, and I'll work very hard to achieve it. Who is your role model among African players? My role model is Wilfried Zaha from Cote d'Ivoire. I admire everything he's achieved in his career. What would you like to say to your coach, Kwesi Appiah, who gave you the opportunity to play for the national team? Coach Appiah is like a father figure to me. I learn so much from him. I thank him for everything he's done for the team, and I hope we can achieve results that match both his ambitions and the hopes of our people. What are your aspirations for the future? My dream is to play professionally in Europe's top leagues. I'll keep working hard every day to make that dream come true. Final words? I want to thank everyone who has supported me — from my family to my coaches, teammates, and the fans. I promise to keep working and improving to raise Sudan's flag high.

Big medals haul for Egypt at African boccia - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly
Hosted at Dr Hassan Mustafa Sports Hall in 6th of October City under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and organised by the Egyptian Boccia Federation led by Ahmed Adam, the event served as a qualifier for the 2026 Boccia World Cup. The Egyptian national team delivered an exceptional performance, earning a total of 11 medals across individual, pairs and team events. In the individual competitions, Egypt claimed eight medals - four gold and four silver. The team also secured two gold medals in the pairs category and a bronze in the team event. In the BC4 pairs event, Hanaa Al-Far and Mustafa Abou Saada captured the gold medal. In the BC3 pairs category, Abdel-Rahman Saad and Rahma Mustafa also achieved gold. The team of Tasneem Gouda (BC1), Mohannad Fawzi, and Islam Al-Madlaa (both BC2) earned the bronze medal in the team event. In the individual competitions, Rahma Hesham (BC3), Hanaa Allam (BC4), Samir Abdel-Moez (BC3), and Tasneem Gouda (BC1) each secured gold medals. Meanwhile, silver medals were awarded to Fawzy (BC2), Abou Saada (BC4), Saad (BC3), and Mustafa (BC3). The African championship was entrusted to the Egyptian Boccia Federation in recognition of Egypt's strong reputation for hosting major regional and international events with excellence and professionalism. Boccia is a Paralympic sport that requires exceptional precision and muscular control. The sport is contested at local, national and international levels, by athletes with severe physical disabilities. Played from a seated position, the aim is to throw red or blue leather balls as close as possible to a small white ball known as the 'jack.' The game is contested in individual, pairs or team formats, with the objective of placing one's balls closest to the jack to score the highest number of points. President of the Egyptian Boccia Federation Adam confirmed that the International Boccia Federation had commended Egypt for its successful hosting of the African Boccia Championship, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in South Korea. Adam said he received high praise from the international federation for the organisation of the championship and extended thanks to all the organising committees, especially that of volunteers. He emphasised that the international federation also applauded the performance of the newest referees, as the tournament witnessed the participation of eight local referees who impressed everyone with their outstanding performance. He noted that Dr Hassan Mustafa Sports Hall was the ideal venue for hosting boccia competitions, as it combines competition and training zones and accommodation in one location, making it exceptionally suitable for boccia athletes and reducing logistical challenges. Adam added that no complaints were received from any of the participating delegations, expressing his satisfaction, 'as this reflects the high-level organisation of the championship and enhances Egypt's reputation as a premier host'. He extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its continuous support of the sport. He added that competition in Africa has become 'extremely fierce' and that the championship featured remarkable and intense contests, reflecting the development of boccia across the continent. Despite the increased level of competition, Egypt still managed to achieve outstanding results in both individual and pairs categories. Adam also addressed the players of the national team directly. 'You fulfilled your responsibilities and more. We always aim for more medals because we're ambitious, but you've done your part and exceeded expectations.' He pointed out that the Egyptian national team continues to develop in both performance and results. Since its international debut in 2022, the team has progressed steadily from winning three medals in their first international appearance, to securing eight in the second, and now capping this continental event with 11 medals, a significant accomplishment for the team. Adam also appealed to sponsors and business leaders to support the athletes, highlighting that the equipment used in boccia is very expensive and requires financial backing. The African championship was entrusted to the Egyptian Boccia Federation under Adam's leadership due to the international federation's confidence in Egypt's consistent ability to successfully organise major continental and international events. Moreover, Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi honoured the Egyptian boccia team's delegation following their impressive performance at this, the third African championship. During the meeting, the minister praised the team's remarkable achievements. Out of 10 participating athletes, the national team secured a total of 11 medals: one gold, four silver, and six bronze. This success highlights the growing level and development of boccia in Egypt. Sobhi expressed his pride in the players, noting that seven athletes had officially qualified for the 2026 World Cup in South Korea. He emphasised the ministry's commitment to supporting Paralympic sports and providing full backing for athletes with disabilities, ensuring they continue to represent Egypt honorably on the international stage. He added that this recognition aligns with the state's strategy to support and celebrate outstanding athletes, particularly in specialised sports where Egypt continues to make notable progress and achieve significant results at both continental and global levels. * A version of this article appears in print in the 7 August, 2025 edition of Al-Ahram Weekly Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
