
Wine Freshness Hacks: Expert Storage Tips for Any Bottle
The good news is that open wine doesn't automatically go bad overnight. With the right storage -- like re-corking the bottle, keeping it upright, and storing it in the fridge -- you can extend the life of your wine by several days. Red, white and sparkling wines all have slightly different windows, but you don't have to rush to finish them right away. A little care can help preserve flavor and prevent waste.
To make sure you're getting the most out of every bottle, I spoke with wine educator Rachel Thralls, who shared her best advice on how to store wine properly -- including the truth about putting red wine in the fridge. On that last topic, Thralls answers bluntly: Yes. Your refrigerator's cool temperature helps keep opened wine fresh for up to five days. Just be sure to let it return to the proper serving temperature before drinking.

Here's how long wine lasts and how best to store it
Once any bottle of wine stays open beyond the few hours it takes to breathe and decant, its quality begins to deteriorate. That's why it is crucial to take some steps to preserve its longevity, should you want to finish the remaining beverage before it essentially turns to vinegar.
According to Thralls, each wine type requires different storage methods. Here's a breakdown of the most common.
Red wine
Open red wine should be stored in the fridge to preserve it and removed about 10 minutes before serving.

Days it will last in the fridge: 3-5
"Red wines can be stored in a cool, dark place with a cork or in your wine fridge or refrigerator," says Thralls. "The more tannin and acidity the red wine has, the longer it tends to last after opening."
For example, a lower tannin wine like Pinot Noir won't last as long as rich reds like Cabernet Sauvignon.
"Some wines will even improve after the first day open," Thralls adds. "If you don't have a wine fridge, your regular fridge is better than letting the wine sit out in a 70-degree room. Just take the red wine out about 10 minutes before you want a glass so it warms up a little. The red wine will also open up in the glass."
Full-bodied white wine
Days it will last in the fridge: 2-3
Fuller-bodied whites tend to lose their oomph a little faster.

"Full-bodied white wines such as oaked chardonnay and viognier tend to oxidize more quickly because they see more oxygen during their prebottling aging process," explains Thralls. "Be certain to always keep them corked and in the fridge. If you drink a lot of this type of wine, it's a really smart idea to also invest in vacuum caps."
Not long after the cork is popped, all wine begins to deteriorate.

Sparkling wine has the shortest shelf lives of any wine.

"Sparkling wines lose their carbonation quickly after opening," stresses Thralls. "A traditional method sparkling wine such as cava or Champagne (which have more atmospheres of pressure, aka more bubbles) will last a little longer than a tank method sparkling wine like prosecco."

Light white, sweet white and rosé wines

Uncorked light white wines can go for as long as five days if kept cold.

"Most light white and rosé wines will be drinkable for up to a week when stored in your refrigerator with a cork," advises Thralls. "You'll notice the taste will change subtly after the first day as the wine oxidizes. The overall fruit character of the wine will often diminish, becoming less vibrant."

The aforementioned guidelines are helpful for any wine novice, Thralls suggests a few general rules to take into consideration with any opened bottle.
1. Invest in a wine preserver. "They work very well for keeping wine after it's been opened. You can use the cork and push it back in or try [a product such as] Repour, which removes the oxygen from the bottle." Coravin wine systems are pricier but these high-tech units actually refill the bottle with argon gas, extending the life of red and white wine for up to a month.
2. Store any open wine in the refrigerator. "Or a wine fridge, if you have one," says Thralls. "This cold storage will slow down any development of the wine, keeping it fresh. The ideal cellar or wine fridge temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit."
3. Keep wine away from direct sunlight or sources of heat. "This includes above a refrigerator or oven. It will get 'cooked' and ruin the aroma and flavor."

One could argue that wine temperature depends on personal preference; there are optimal temperatures that somms and wine professionals aim for.
Generally, wine actually tastes better served slightly cool, which applies to both whites and reds. This $21 device can chill warm wine (or any other liquid) in seconds.
"The same ideology of experiencing coffees, teas and sparkling waters at different temperatures also applies to wine," says Thralls, revealing that the more delicate floral aromatics in fine wines can actually be subdued at overly cool temperatures or burn off too quickly when the wine is too warm.
"If you drink affordable wine most of the time, serving it slightly chilled will disguise most 'off' aromas," she shares. "A wine above 70 degrees Fahrenheit will start to smell more alcoholic because of increased ethanol evaporation that occurs as the temperature rises."
Thralls notes that this is a good reason to not fill your wine glass up to the brim. "A typical serving of wine is about 5 ounces and a bottle of wine contains just over 25 ounces, so you should get about five glasses of wine per bottle," she explains. "The extra space in a typical wine glass is designed to hold the aromas when you swirl and smell your wine, so try and save some space."

Champagne and sparkling wines
Affordable sparkling wines taste best served at 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have a high-quality, more expensive Champagne or sparkling wine, serve at ideal light white wine temperatures, which are slightly warmer.
Light white wines and rosés
Examples of light white wines are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. These wines are best served between 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, slightly cooler than heavier white wines. Rosé wines also taste best and maintain their crispness and acidity at these temperatures.
Heavy whites and light reds
Heavier white wines, such as chardonnay, taste well at a range of temperatures depending on someone's personal preference, from 48 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Oak-aged whites' fruit tends to taste better and when served slightly warmer. Lighter red wines such as Pinot Noir taste better at this cooler end of the spectrum.

Medium-bodied reds
Medium-bodied reds, such as merlot, are best served right around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is also the ideal cellar temperature. You can grab your bottle right out of your cellar and pour a glass. Keep in mind that wines tend to warm up in the glass as well.
Full-bodied and aged reds
Full-bodied reds such as cabernet sauvignon, syrah and zinfandel are best served between 59 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. But isn't that too cold for a red wine? The wine will taste much better if cool and, as Thrall mentioned, the glass will warm the wine as well.
No matter how you swirl it, a good wine is one that doesn't end up down the drain. If you must tap out and savor the remainder of your bottle for future imbibing pleasure, take all of these tips into consideration and you'll never waste money (and precious alcohol) again. Cheers.

Southwest Flight Forced Into Extreme Maneuver to Avoid Mid-Air Collision
A Southwest Airlines flight resorted to a sudden drop to avoid a mid-air traffic collision while departing from Burbank, Calif. The plane abruptly descended 475 feet to avoid a collision with a Hawker Hunter aircraft, ABC News reported. About six minutes after Southwest flight 1496 took off from Hollywood Burbank Airport, it abruptly descended from 14,100 feet to 13,625 feet. The flight was bound for Las Vegas. Steve Ulasewicz, a passenger on the flight, said he experienced a "significant drop," and told ABC News the pilot announced that they had performed the maneuver to "avoid a midair collision." "Southwest Airlines Flight 1496 responded to an onboard alert that another aircraft was in the vicinity while in Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement obtained by NBCLA. "The FAA is investigating the event that occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Friday, July 25." A spokesperson for Hollywood Burbank Airport told NBCLA authorities are "looking into the incident, however, there is currently no evidence that it occurred within the airspace above our airport." Southwest Airlines confirmed crew responded to onboard air traffic alerts after departing from Burbank. Two flight attendants were treated for injuries, but no one else was harmed. "The crew of Southwest Flight 1496 responded to two onboard traffic alerts Friday afternoon while climbing out of Burbank… requiring them to climb and descend to comply with the alerts," Southwest Airlines said in a statement obtained by NBCLA. "The flight continued to Las Vegas, where it landed uneventfully. Albuquerque Reliques: A statue on Fourth honoring pioneer women
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — At the corner of Fourth Street and Marble Avenue, there's a statue that's been standing for nearly 100 years. The piece aims to honor the pioneering women of the early 1900s. The Lew Wallace chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Trails Association donated 'Madonna of the Trail' to the city back in 1928. It was adopted by the city's public art program 70 years later. During this time, the piece underwent some conservation work. Albuquerque Reliques is a web series taking a look at landmarks, art, and oddities in the area. Pt I. – Pt. II – Story behind the 'Transformers' sculptures downtown Pt. III – A mural at Civic Plaza representing resiliency Pt. IV – Pt. V – Downtown hawk sculpture symbolizing the west Pt. VI – A faux dinosaur fossil installation in a west side arroyo Pt. VII – An Old Town chapel 'From my understanding, it was a mission of specifically the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Trails Association, to honor women who were pioneers during this time,' said City of Albuquerque Public Art Outreach Coordinator Mandolen Sanchez. 'And so, you know, they wanted these monuments kind of along the country in different spots. And so this was an area they identified and were interested in sharing it.' The statue showcases a woman in a bonnet and a dress with boots, carrying two children. It was created by Architect August Leimbach out of Algonite stone. The statue is one of 12 placed along Route 40 from Maryland, to California. On the side of the statue, there's a passage which reads — 'Into the primitive west,Face upflung toward the she came,Her children beside she made them a home,Beautiful pioneer mother!' A time capsule is buried in the same area as the statue. The capsule was initially buried in 1928, then replaced during the statue conservation work in 1998. 'They did find the time capsule when they moved the piece. And a lot of the materials had been kind of damaged by water and just the environment. It wasn't sealed completely,' said Sanchez. 'But, you know, that did give an opportunity for, in the 1998 move, to do a new time capsule that is part of that.' The time capsule includes original items from 1928, such as a padlock from a memory box placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution, an Albuquerque Journal article, and a 1928 silver dollar. There are also new additions, such as a beanie baby and Balloon Fiesta pins. The capsule is expected to be opened in 2048. The City of Albuquerque has mostly moved away from monuments/memorials as public art pieces. 'Because there are so many other avenues for people to fund projects like that and, you know, dedicate them to individuals or larger communities,' said Sanchez. 'And so, you know, I think it's a balancing of having public art funds be available for artists for other projects as well.' Albuquerque officials discuss moving historic diner to Route 66 Visitor Center
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For some it's a childhood memory, 'I grew up there. I remember that diner like I mean growing up, we walked by it, we ate at it, we did everything because it was part of our community,' said one member during a Route 66 Visitor Center Commission meeting. The traveling Valentine Diner, known as the Little House Diner, has moved around the city from places like Downtown to Nob Hill. And now, the city will decide its future with this goal in mind, 'To fulfill the original intent of the donation by the Hernandez family, which was to preserve it and celebrate its individual history,' said Shelle Sanchez, Director of Arts and Culture with CABQ. The proposal is to move the diner from Nob Hill, where it's being repurposed as a police substation, to the Route 66 Visitors Center, where it will be restored as a functioning diner. 'To me, what has happened with the diner is a disgrace,' said one member of the commission about the adjustment made to its original design. 'Their vision was for it to be in a prominent place, and I don't feel like out here is in a prominent place,' said one Hernandez family member. Members of the Hernandez family questioned the newly formed Route 66 Visitor Center Commission about whether people would actually go to the location on the outskirts of town. 'We kind of want it to be used the way they wanted it to be used, and I don't get that impression from, you know, putting it out here,' said one Hernandez family member. A Larry Barker investigation revealed that the city spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to furnish the building without proper oversight. Three years after its ribbon-cutting, the building still isn't open to the public. The city said this could change by the end of the summer, as they are in the process of hiring staff for the center. They believe that with a sign park coming this fall, the center will pick up traction. 'We actually are very optimistic about the number of people that will come here,' said Sanchez. Nob Hill's Neighborhood Association said they will be disappointed if the diner is relocated, saying, 'The little diner is dear to our hearts. It's been there 28 years.' Members with Nob Hill Main Street expressed support for the project, saying, 'If there's a place where this Valentine diner can be properly showcased, then that should be what happens.'
