India may be forced to leave U-23 stars behind as 17 players fail to report for camp
The U-23 preparatory camp kicked off in Bengaluru on Aug 1, with only 10 players who made it to Tajikistan for the two friendlies in attendance Panaji: India coach Naushad Moosa could be forced to field several untested players for the crucial AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers next month as more than half of the probables are yet to report for the preparatory camp in Bengaluru. The U-23 preparatory camp kicked off in Bengaluru on Aug 1, with only 10 players who made it to Tajikistan for the two friendlies in attendance. Seventeen others who were handpicked failed to report as they remain busy with club duties in the Durand Cup and AFC Champions League Two playoff. Some of the players have hardly been involved in the Durand Cup. 'We arranged for two friendlies in Malaysia against Iraq (later this month) and had a long camp, so that the team gets good preparations. But if the players are unavailable due to club commitments, our efforts will count for nothing,' said All India Football Federation (AIFF) deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan. 'We can understand there are FIFA international windows (for release of players) but clubs need to make some sacrifices in the interest of the national team. We have a talented group of U-23 players.' Many of the players who are missing are definite starters. Mohun Bagan defender Abhishek Singh and striker Suhail Ahmad Bhat, for example, are with the senior national team. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Leones: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Then there's Parthib Gogoi and Macarton Louis Nickson (NorthEast United), besides Mohammed Sanan and Nikhil Barla (Jamshedpur FC), all of whom are expected to play a crucial role in the Qualifiers. Goa coach Manolo Marquez has told Moosa that he will release Ayush Chhetri, Sanatomba Singh and Alan Saji after the AFC Champions League Two playoff against Al Seeb on Aug 13. 'The AIFF has preliminarily registered 50 players with the AFC for the Qualifiers so Moosa was forced to pick additional players to make up the numbers at the camp. It's not an ideal situation as most of these players are not ready for international competitions,' said another official. The gap came to the fore when India U-23 played a friendly against FC Goa in Bengaluru and conceded a goal in the first minute itself. They eventually lost 5-0. 'The Durand Cup final is on Aug 23 and the team leaves for Malaysia before that,' said a source who has been tracking this development. 'You cannot allow players to join the team without attending training sessions.' India are drawn to play Bahrain (Sept 3), Qatar (Sept 6) and Brunei (Sept 9) in the Asian Cup qualifiers in Doha. Chibber was asked to draw parallels between the two sides. To which she said, 'We can't compare the men's team with the women's team but I myself have been playing for the women's football for the past 15 years. 'What we have achieved recently after 25 years of hard work, showcases the capabilities of our footballers and in what direction we are moving. We are headed towards a good future, a bright future.'

BCCI fast-tracks Vaibhav Suryavanshi in special programme as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma ODI exit chatter grows
14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has had a dream start to his cricketing career with some record-breaking performances in the IPL, followed by a stellar U-19 tour of England. However, that might not be all—if a new report is to be believed, Suryavanshi is on the BCCI's radar, with the Indian board looking at the young batter to fill the void left by the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As per a MyKhel report, Suryavanshi will undergo a special training programme designed by the BCCI, focusing on technical drills and match-specific scenarios. Suryavanshi's childhood coach, Manish Ojha, while talking to the publication about the BCCI's plans, said, "BCCI is looking ahead. The senior players are gradually retiring, and to fill that vacuum, the next batch of youngsters must be fully ready. This training for Vaibhav is part of that process. We pick boys one by one and prepare them accordingly for the demands of international cricket." After returning from his England duties, Suryavanshi attended a special training session with the Rajasthan Royals and then received a call from the BCCI that landed him at the National Cricket Academy on 10 August. The left-handed batter is expected to stay only a week at the NCA before joining the U-19 side for the next assignment. Ojha said that the 14-year-old now wants to work on bringing consistency to his long-format scores. 'He has the ability to attack from the very first ball, which is a huge positive in T20s and one-dayers. You've seen it in the IPL, U-19, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. But in longer formats, his performance level drops compared to white-ball cricket. The aim is to raise that consistency—if he plays 10 innings, 7-8 should be impactful,' Ojha added. The chatter about Suryavanshi taking up a bigger role in Indian cricket comes shortly after a new Dainik Jagran report claimed that the upcoming Australia tour could mark the end of ODI careers for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Meanwhile, a PTI report citing a BCCI official stated that the Indian board is focusing on the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup next year and would not make such a significant decision hastily. Notably, the two batters had announced their retirement from T20 cricket last year and, ahead of the England Test series this year, had also decided to quit Test cricket.
