Google made it clear that AI is a big part of its business at the company's I/O event last month. Its Gemini AI model was the star of the show, and the tech giant plans to inject the AI into all of its devices and services, including its upcoming smart glasses, Google Search results, and Gmail.
In the big AI race, Google is usually in second place behind OpenAI's ChatGPT, but a new update for Gemini could give it a big lead over the competition.
With its latest update, Google Gemini can now act more as an AI assistant, a common goal for the different tech companies. Gemini Pro and Ultra users can now have the AI do scheduled actions by asking it to perform a task at a certain time or make a recurring action.
"Now you can wake up with a summary of your calendar and unread emails, or get a creative boost by having Gemini write five ideas for your blog every Monday," Dave Citron, senior director, product management for the Gemini app, said in a blog post. "Stay informed by getting updates on your favorite sports team, or schedule a one-off task like asking Gemini to give you a summary of an award show the day after it happens. Just tell Gemini what you need and when, and it will take care of the rest."
The Gemini update is already live for those with Gemini Pro and Ultra subscriptions, along with individuals using qualifying Google Workspace business and education plans.
All the big tech companies are trying to get their AI model to be the
The company that is still behind with its AI agent is Apple. It could be said that Siri was the first agent out of the gate when it came out in 2011, but its usefulness continues to lag behind when compared to the likes of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Apple did plan to release an overhauled Siri this year. The company announced this change last year when it revealed its Apple Intelligence feature, but turmoil within the company has been setting back the reveal of the new Siri. Apple reportedly changed leadership of the team handling the new Siri, but it's unlikely to make its debut this year.
AI, in general, has been a sore spot for Apple. Although it has a partnership with OpenAI and makes use of ChatGPT for its AI services, it has been rumored that Apple won't have much AI to talk about at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference that starts on Monday.

Google Is Offering Buyouts to US Employees Throughout the Company
Google is offering buyouts to U.S. employees across multiple divisions of the company, including within its search division. The company's knowledge and information division, which includes Google's search, advertising, and commerce teams, announced its "voluntary exit program" today, the company told Investopedia. Buyouts have also been offered to the tech titan's central engineering teams, the company confirmed. 'Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead,' Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini wrote in a statement. "A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person," Mencini added. Google's latest move to reduce headcount comes after multiple rounds of layoffs in 2024, and a major push at the start of 2023 that laid off approximately 12,000 workers, or about 6% of its workforce. Shares of Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) climbed about 1% Tuesday, leaving them down over 5% for 2025 so far. They were little changed in after-hours trading. What is Liquid Glass? Internet reacts to Apple's new software design
USA TODAY and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article. Pricing and availability subject to change. Apple's Liquid Glass made a splashy debut this week, but it might not be for everyone. Some social media users have been quick to criticize or poke fun at the "beautiful, new" software design for iOS 26, which was unveiled at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference, an annual information technology conference hosted by the tech juggernaut. The design, dubbed Liquid Glass, was crafted with a "translucent material [that] reflects and refracts its surroundings, while dynamically transforming to help bring greater focus to content," Apple said in a news release. Alan Dye, Apple's vice president of Human Interface Design, called the iOS 26 rollout the company's "broadest software design update ever." 'It combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve, as it transforms depending on your content or context," said Dye in a statement. Here's what to know about Liquid Glass, and what people are saying about it. Liquid Glass is a new software design, or aesthetic, described by Apple CEO Tim Cook as "Expressive. Delightful. But still instantly familiar." Expressive. Delightful. But still instantly our new software design with Liquid Glass. — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) June 9, 2025 According to Apple, the "look" makes apps and system experiences more expressive and delightful while being instantly familiar. It is translucent and behaves like glass in the real world and its color is informed by surrounding content and intelligently adapts between light and dark environments. The new design, unlike previous iterations, will extend across platforms, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26 and watchOS 26. Many people like the idea of Apple's "Liquid Glass," but the execution, not as much. Some of the most prominent concerns include the readability of notifications and the distortion to the image behind the squiggly, bubble-shaped app outline. "The new liquid glass looks abysmal and is a perfect example of focusing on form/prettiness/design over of functionality/readability/practicality like, what are we doing here," an X user wrote in a June 9 post. Some have also speculated the new design would not have passed the sniff test of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. "Steve Jobs had very famously said that design was how it works, not how it thoughts on liquid glass would have been interesting," one user wrote, referencing a famous quote from the founder. Others, still, felt that Apple completely missed the mark by offering the "liquid glass display" instead of revisiting the AI upgrades unveiled at last year's WWDC. Memes, critiques and threads have surfaced on social in the wake of Apple's announcement. But once you put everything together and fill the screen, it turns into noise and makes things feel way too — Shayan (@ImSh4yy) June 9, 2025 Apple's Liquid Glass rollout is actually genius: the design ensures that you can't read the comically-wrong Apple Intelligence notification summaries. — Trung Phan (@TrungTPhan) June 10, 2025 Liquid glass…. 'this new material'. Ffs it's a graphic. — Asoz Rashid (@AsozRashid) June 9, 2025 I like the idea of liquid glass but the readability is not good at all…#WWDC25 — Bradley (@VerdeSelvans) June 10, 2025 I don't think the reaction to Apple's liquid glass is a 'who moved my cheese' moment. This is just objectively bad design: — Bryan Jones (@bdkjones) June 10, 2025 Liquid Glassに対する既視感 — あるごす (@argos_M1111) June 9, 2025 the Liquid Glass effect is so satisfying on menus — † lucia scarlet 🩸 (@luciascarlet) June 10, 2025 liquid glass looks sick — Dan Toomey (@dhtoomey) June 9, 2025 steve jobs in heaven watching apple introduce the liquid glass design. — Sahil (@sahilypatel) June 9, 2025 Apple trying to convince us they've done something groundbreaking by adjusting the opacity of the control center and calling it 'liquid glass' should be a crime. — no chaser, neat.
