Success Academy Charter students' test scores were nearly double those of NYC public school peers: data
Pass rates for pupils at the charter network in grades 3-7 were nearly double those of their public school counterparts, the figures from Success Academy show.
The charter school system boasted that 92.5% of its 9,280 students in those grades passed the 2025 English Language Arts exam while 96.2% proved they were proficient in math.
'We believe, and have proven, that when children have access to excellent schools, they achieve excellence,' Success Academy founder and CEO Eva Moskowitz said in a statement.

'It is an absolute tragedy that so many are prevented from accessing the kind of school that would allow them to fulfill their potential.'
Success Academy saw its students' ELA pass rate jump more than 10% compared to the previous year, while a modest 1.2% bump was recorded in math, according to its data.
By comparison, students in the nation's largest public school district — while also notching better scores than last year — were still largely missing the mark.
Some 56.3% of public school students in grades 3-8 met the proficiency standards for ELA, while 56.9% passed math, the Department of Education said this week.
Success Academy also pointed out that its black and Hispanic students excelled by far greater margins than pupils in those racial and ethnic groups at DOE schools.
Black students in the charter system had a 95.5% pass rate in math, compared to just 43% in public schools. Hispanic students at Success Academy secured a 96.8% proficiency rate, as DOE students in the same ethnic group garnered 43.1%.
Black and Hispanic students also hit the right mark on the ELA exam, at 91.8% and 93.2% proficiency rates, respectively, while those who made the grade in DOE schools were at only 47% and 43.5%, the figures show.
While the state tests are typically given to grades 3-8, Success Academy's eighth graders took the regents exams for ELA and Algebra instead.
Success Academy enrolls about 22,000 students across 59 elementary, middle and high schools while the DOE provides instruction to roughly 1.1 million students at some 1,800 schools.

Success Academy has long fought for more space in DOE buildings while battling the influential United Federation of Teachers union, which along with state leaders, have resisted lifting caps on the number of charter schools that can open in the city.
'Overall the charter schools are doing well. We congratulate them,' Bronx state Sen. Luis Sepulveda told The Post. 'I support the charter schools and traditional public schools.'
Mayor Eric Adams and public school officials earlier this week hailed the latest test DOE scores because more public school students passed the ELA and math exams than the year prior.
'I also applaud [DOE] Chancellor Melissa Ramos and Michael Mulgrew of the UFT because the test score results that came out a few days ago are moving in the right direction for the traditional public schools,' Sepulveda said.

Justice Department said to consider probe of Fed's Lisa Cook
The Department of Justice is potentially launching an investigation into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, according to a letter seen by Bloomberg News. The notification comes only a day after President Donald Trump pushed for her resignation from the central bank. In the letter, senior DOJ official Ed Martin urged Fed Chair Powell to remove Cook from her Board of Governors post. 'At this time, I encourage you to remove Ms. Cook from your Board,' Martin wrote in the letter, per Bloomberg. 'Do it today before it is too late!" Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing and Finance Agency, sent a criminal referral on Wednesday to the DOJ, alleging that Cook had been misleading in her mortgage applications for a pair of residential properties in Georgia and Michigan. Following the referral, President Trump was blunt in pushing for her resignation. "Cook must resign, now!!!" he said in a short social media post . The White House and Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Cook, for her part, is digging in. 'I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet,' she said in a statement provided by a Fed spokesperson on Wednesday. 'I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.' Pulte's referral letter — first posted on social media — described mortgage documents it had obtained about Cook, alleging she had "falsified bank documents and property records to obtain more favorable loan terms." Over the course of a month in 2021, Cook obtained primary residence mortgages on two properties in Michigan and Georgia, declaring both to be her main residence. Trump recently had an opportunity to imprint his stamp on the central bank after the early resignation of former Fed Governor Adriana Kugler. That allowed him to name White House aide Stephen Miran to the slot, at least for now. He must still be confirmed by the Senate. Another opening in the Board of Governors would pave the way for the president to install a second pick who's receptive to his constant demand for lower interest rates. Still, Trump's ability to fire a Senate-confirmed appointee is extremely limited. Only the Fed chair can theoretically remove a sitting governor for cause, usually defined as conducting "malfeasance in office" or "neglect of duty" in the position. Cook was nominated by former President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in a May 2022 party-line vote. She is the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's Board of Governors, a seven-member group that takes frequent votes on monetary policy and helps regulate the financial sector. Her current term expires in 2038.

AI firm rolls out tool to detect nuclear weapons talk
Artificial Intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic has rolled out a tool to detect talk about nuclear weapons, it said in a Thursday blog post. 'Nuclear technology is inherently dual-use: the same physics principles that power nuclear reactors can be misused for weapons development. As AI models become more capable, we need to keep a close eye on whether they can provide users with dangerous technical knowledge in ways that could threaten national security,' Anthropic said in the blog post. 'Information relating to nuclear weapons is particularly sensitive, which makes evaluating these risks challenging for a private company acting alone,' the blog post continued. 'That's why last April we partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to assess our models for nuclear proliferation risks and continue to work with them on these evaluations.' Anthropic said in the blog post that it was 'going beyond assessing risk to build the tools needed to monitor for it,' adding that the firm made 'an AI system that automatically categorizes content' called a 'classifier' alongside the DOE and NNSA. The system, according to the blog post, 'distinguishes between concerning and benign nuclear-related conversations with 96% accuracy in preliminary testing.' The firm also said the classifier has been used on traffic for its own artificial intelligence (AI) model Claude 'as part of our broader system for identifying misuse of our models.' 'Early deployment data suggests the classifier works well with real Claude conversations,' Anthropic added. Anthropic also announced earlier this month it would offer Claude to every federal government branch for $1 in the wake of a similar OpenAI move a few weeks ago. In a blog post, Anthropic said federal agencies would gain access to two versions of Claude.

DOJ Urges Fed's Powell to Remove Cook as Probe Gets Underway
(Bloomberg) — The Justice Department signaled possible plans to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, with a top official informing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell of the probe and encouraging him to remove her from the board in a letter sent Thursday. Ed Martin, a Justice Department official who has led similar investigations into Senator Adam Schiff of California and New York Attorney General Letitia James, told Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that Cook's case 'requires further examination' in the letter. 'Do it today before it is too late! After all, no American thinks it is appropriate that she serve during this time with a cloud hanging over her.' President Donald Trump has discussed firing Cook, according to a White House official familiar, but that's not under active consideration. Trump would prefer to see Cook resign or be fired by Powell, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the issue. Powell doesn't have the legal authority to fire Cook, a Senate-confirmed presidential appointee. Only the president can remove a Fed governor and only for cause. Cook on Wednesday said she intended to remain at the central bank, after Trump called for her resignation. 'I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet,' Cook said in an emailed statement via a Fed spokesperson. 'I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.' A resignation would create another opening for Trump to fill on the Fed board as the president piles pressure on the central bank to lower rates. Trump has tarnished Fed Chair Jerome Powell as 'Too Late' for not slashing rates months ago, and suggested he too should step aside. Trump has also heavily criticized Powell and the Fed over the cost of its ongoing headquarters renovation project. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte wrote a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Martin on Aug. 15 suggesting that Cook may have committed a criminal offense. The letter alleged that Cook 'falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statute.' Cook became the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's Board of Governors in Washington when she was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2022. Her term expires in 2038. Martin didn't immediately respond to a message left for comment. The Federal Reserve declined to comment. 'As we begin any investigation of the conduct like that by Ms. Cook in the referral, I will likely be required for confidentiality purposes to remain silent about our investigations,' Martin wrote in the letter to the Fed chair. Her departure would give Trump an opportunity to secure a four-person majority on the seven-member board after another Biden appointee, Adriana Kugler, announced on Aug. 1 she would vacate her position early. Kugler's term was set to expire in January. Two other governors, Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, were appointed during Trump's first term. During her initial confirmation process, Cook faced intense scrutiny from Republican lawmakers and conservative media outlets who accused her of misrepresenting parts of her resume and tried to use that to sink her nomination. She strongly denied the allegations and was confirmed on a party-line vote in the Senate, with then-Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in to break a 50-50 tie. As a governor, Cook has held a permanent seat on the Federal Open Market Committee, the group of 12 policymakers that votes on monetary policy decisions. The panel also includes five presidents from the Fed's 12 regional banks. Cook has expressed worry over inflation and tariffs this year, but also said in early August that the July jobs report was 'concerning' and could indicate a potential turning point for the US economy. The central bank is expected to cut its benchmark rate when it next gathers in September. (Updates with White House official's comment in fourth paragraph.)
