Singapore health, transport ministers deny links to Fujian gangster Su Haijin after dinner photos spark scrutiny
SINGAPORE, May 6 – Singapore Ministers Ong Ye Kung and Chee Hong Tat have clarified that they had no personal connection with Su Haijin, a known member of a Fujian gang, after photos surfaced showing them at the same dinners as him.
In a joint statement released by their press secretaries, the ministers said they attended the gatherings at the invitation of a friend and were unaware that Su would be present.
'As ministers, they meet a diverse range of people at various events and gatherings,' the statement read.
It added that Ong recalled encountering Su again at a separate dinner months later.
Ong Ye Kung is serves as the Singapore health minister, while Chee Hong Tat is transport minister and second finance minister.
The statement stressed that the ministers had no dealings or contact with Su before or after those dinners.
The statement added that the PAP government upholds a high standard of integrity, and the ministers are determined to uphold this although they may inadvertently come into contact with people who are later established to be unsavoury.
Su, a Cypriot national, was among 10 foreigners arrested in a S$3 billion (RM9.8 billion) money laundering case on August 15, 2023.
He was sentenced to 14 months' jail in April 2024, after admitting to one charge of resisting arrest and two money laundering charges. Another 11 charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
Photos of Ong and Chee with Su were posted on the Instagram account of former Reform Party president Charles Yeo.

Prabowo sends Gerindra officials to meet Megawati, deliver confidential message
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri (left) talks with House Speaker Puan Maharani of the PDI-P and Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of Gerindra Party at her residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, in this undated photo. - Instagram/@sufmi_dasco via The Jakarta Post/ANN JAKARTA: Officials from President Prabowo Subianto's Gerindra Party have revealed that they met with Megawati Sukarnoputri—the matriarch of the de facto opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)—at her private residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, to deliver a confidential message from the President. Gerindra executive chairman and House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad shared the news on his Instagram account on Thursday (June 5), saying the delegation 'received guidance and input for the good of the nation under the leadership of Pak Prabowo' during the visit a few days earlier. When asked by reporters about whether the meeting discussed the possibility of the PDI-P joining Prabowo's big-tent Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), Dasco said no, but acknowledged that the topic often comes up during interactions between the two parties. He also stopped short of revealing the agenda discussed during the meeting with Megawati, saying it involved a confidential message from the President. Separately, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, who accompanied Dasco to Megawati's residence, said the country's fifth president had reminded him to 'stay healthy and take care of Prabowo,' as quoted by Antara. Political observer Kunto Adi from Padjadjaran University suggested the visit was likely linked to the PDI-P's upcoming congress, where the party is expected to announce its political stance regarding Prabowo's administration. 'It is very possible that [the increasingly intense relationship between Prabowo and Megawati] signals that the PDI-P will soon join Prabowo's cabinet,' he said, as reported by Kompas. Prabowo and Megawati made a rare joint appearance on Monday to celebrate the birth of the country's founding ideology Pancasila. In the lead-up to the ceremony, Prabowo personally welcomed Megawati and exchanged jokes and pleasantries. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Three killed in Russian attack on Ukraine's Kharkiv; Ukrainian drones injure two near Moscow
LONDON: Overnight missile and bomb strikes by Russia on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv left three people dead and 22 hurt, while a Ukrainian drone attack in the Moscow region wounded two people, officials from both countries said separately on Saturday. Russian forces used high-precision long-range weapons and drones to hit designated military targets in Ukraine overnight, hitting all of them, according to Russia's Defence Ministry. Separately, Ukraine has indefinitely postponed accepting the bodies of its killed soldiers and the exchange of prisoners of war, Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said. This was counter to an agreement between the two countries at a second round of peace talks in Istanbul on Monday, where they said they would swap more prisoners and return the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers. The northeastern city of Kharkiv, one of Ukraine's largest, is just a few dozen kilometres (miles) from the Russian border and has been under frequent Russian shelling during more than three years of war triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion. 'Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war,' Mayor Ihor Terekhov said in a post on Telegram earlier on Saturday. Residential buildings, educational and infrastructure facilities were attacked, he said, and photos showed buildings burnt and reduced partially to rubble, as rescuers carried the wounded away for treatment. Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said there could still be people buried under the rubble after one civilian industrial facility was hit by 40 drones and several bombs. In the Moscow region, two people were injured after a drone attack by Ukraine overnight and on Friday, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram, with nine drones shot down. Russia's aviation watchdog said operations had resumed at the Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports in the Moscow region after being suspended temporarily for flight safety reasons. The Defence Ministry said that since midnight, air defence units had intercepted and destroyed 36 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, including the Moscow region. Ukraine's air forces also shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet on Saturday morning, its military said without providing further details. Russian forces have not yet commented on the matter while Reuters could not independently verify the report. A Ukrainian drone attack deep inside Russian territory last weekend likely damaged around 10% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet and hit some of the aircraft as they were being prepared for strikes on Ukraine, a senior German military official said in a YouTube podcast set for broadcast later on Saturday.
