Court sets July 1 to decide on committal bid against Isham Jalil for contempt
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil's remarks on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's trial and appeal posed a genuine risk of undermining public confidence in the administration of justice, the High Court here heard.
DPP Mohamad Mustaffa P. Kunyalam submitted Friday (May 30) that Isham ( pic) had brought the judiciary into disrepute with statements that questioned the conduct and decisions of both the Federal Court and High Court concerning the SRC International Sdn Bhd and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) cases involving Najib.

He said the conduct of Isham, whose full name is Hizatul Isham Abdul Jalil, amounted to interference in the due administration of justice and constituted a serious contempt of court.
As such, he submitted, it warranted either a fine or custodial sentence.
"The contemnor's averments that his statement during the town hall session was a fair and genuine criticism towards the judiciary are clearly against the evidence stacked against him," he said during proceedings before Justice K. Muniandy.
Isham purportedly made the comments during an interview titled Townhall for Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa, on Sept 30, 2023, which was posted on The Malaya Post's Facebook page the same day.
Isham's counsel, Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, contended that the prosecution had failed to establish its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court fixed July 1 for its decision on the Attorney General's (AG) application to initiate committal proceedings against Isham.
On March 4 last year, the court granted the AG's application for leave to commence the committal proceedings.
In an ex parte application filed on Dec 28, 2023, the AG sought an order for Isham to be fined or committed to prison.
The AG claimed that during the interview, Isham had challenged the recusal process involving Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who is presiding over the 1MDB trial at the High Court.
The AG further asserted that Isham's remarks had tarnished the reputation of the judiciary and could potentially erode public confidence. – Bernama

PKR Youth chief makes case for accepting ‘professional' Zafrul

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The head of PKR Youth, Kamil Munim, has stated support for accepting former Umno leader Tengku Zafrul Aziz into PKR, saying the move would boost support for the party. Kamil said PKR should be open to taking in professional figures like Tengku Zafrul; the decision would show that the party was continuing to expand its horizons as a mature party, reflecting its readiness to continue leading the nation. 'I believe that Tengku Zafrul joining PKR, which is understood to have been in discussion for more than a year, would allow us to attract support from various quarters as we build a more progressive, just and inclusive nation,' he said in a post on X. 'This is in line with PKR's commitment to politics based on ideas, expertise and integrity. Tengku Zafrul's experiences can offer some added value to PKR,' said Kamil, who is a political secretary to PKR president and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member yesterday and stated his intention to join PKR. This ruffled some feathers within his former party, with Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warning PKR against breeding disharmony between the government allies. PKR central leadership council member Adam Adli was quoted by Malaysiakini as expressing concern that ties with Umno would become tense because of Tengku Zafrul's decision. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the party will consider the input of its government allies as well as PKR's own grassroots in evaluating membership applications, including that of Tengku Zafrul.

Tengku Zafrul's GE15 pledge unenforceable, says Tok Mat
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said he could not see how the GE15 pledge could be enforced against Tengku Zafrul Aziz as he did not win the seat he contested. PETALING JAYA : The review of a pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul Aziz when he was a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th general election cannot be enforced because he did not win in the election. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said Tengku Zafrul was appointed as the investment, trade and industry minister in his capacity as a senator, Bernama reported. 'This matter is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win in the election. 'That pledge is made by any elected representative as a state assemblyman or an MP. 'If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not to the individual. 'The individual who becomes a candidate and wins signs many agreements, including reimbursing the costs incurred by the party and many other things. 'Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator. So I don't see how the pledge can be enforced against him,' he told reporters after a luncheon in Seremban today. He was commenting on a statement by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, who urged the party to take stern action against Tengku Zafrul, who announced his departure from Umno to join PKR yesterday. Puad also asked the party to review the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul when he was a BN candidate in GE15. Tengku Zafrul lost in the election for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. Puad asked the party to study the possibility of demanding RM100 million in compensation if Tengku Zafrul's action is considered as party hopping. Asked whether the resignation would affect Umno, Mohamad, who is also Rembau MP, said Tengku Zafrul did not hold a high position in the party and it would not have a significant impact on Umno. Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party's legal team would review whether Tengku Zafrul had breached the agreement signed during GE15, which binds candidates to the party.
