Fresh caste survey ploy to increase quota for minorities, claims Shobha
MANGALURU: Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment and MSMEs Shobha Karandlaje on Thursday accused the Congress government in Karnataka of hatching a conspiracy to increase the reservation for minorities through a fresh caste census.
Talking to reporters in Mangaluru, she alleged that the State Government has 'one-point agenda behind the caste census which is to show that the population of minorities has increased and thereby increase reservation for them.'
She alleged that whenever Siddaramaiah comes to power, he tries to divide people on the basis of religion and caste, and the fresh caste census is intended to further divide the people.
People of the state will not accept it, Shobha said, questioning the sudden U-turn of the CM despite stating that he will implement the caste census amid opposition to it. 'So much money was spent on it in a span of 10 years. Two commissions were appointed,' Shobha recalled.
Expressing serious doubts about the completion of the fresh caste census within 90 days, she said the caste numbers will be written sitting in AC rooms. 'Did the Jayaprakash Hegde Commission visit your homes to check your caste?' she asked.
Earlier, she said the fresh caste survey was announced and was intended to divert people's attention from the Bengaluru stampede that killed 11 people.
Shobha blamed the State Government for not providing land for railways, national highways, and other Central projects, resulting in delays in the implementation of several key infrastructural projects in Karnataka.
'Nitin Gadkari (union transport minister) asks us not to approach him, stating that Karnataka is not ready to give land for highways and DCs are not cooperating. Every time when I approach him, he asks why the South Indian states are not ready to give land,' the minister said.
She also took serious exception to Siddaramaiah not attending NITI Aayog meetings.
'How many NITI Aayog meetings have you attended? Then how will you present the state's demands? You don't want development. You only make drama on the pretext of guarantees,' she asked the CM. Further, she said that the MSME minister of the state has not met her so far.

The committee will publish its report within three months. The government said that the panel will be headed by the home secretary and will include representatives from the state and central governments, not below the rank of joint secretary. Elevated Rotary Road Being Explored For Medical Square: Gadkari
1 2 3 4 Nagpur: An ambitious project to alleviate traffic woes at the busy Medical Square is being contemplated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari . The Nagpur MP on Thursday said he is ideating upon a project to build an elevated rotary road to help ease the traffic flow. In a brief statement about it, Gadkari said, "At Ashok Chowk, we are planning to construct a signal-less square, like a roundabout rotary. Another thing I have in mind is, Medical Square. To build an elevated road (rotary) there." The Union minister clarified that these are in the conceptualization stage. Regarding the Liberty Square flyover, Gadkari said that the design is faulty, but it will be rectified. "I have already prepared a proposal for Rs34 crore and it has been sent for clearance. A new design has been readied for it," said Gadkari, while addressing the media on Thursday. The flyover has three landings, one at Katol Road, one at Mankapur and one between LIC Square and RBI Square. It's the landing at the latter section which is being redesigned, and it's likely that another landing might connect on the road going towards LIC Square. At this point Gadkari even called his official from the sidelines and enquired about the status of that file. After speaking with the official, Gadkari said "Work will start soon and the problem will be solved. Giving an update on other flyovers of the city, Gadkari first spoke about the Kadbi Chowk flyover going towards Mominpura. "All permissions have been taken and the issue (for delay) is due to encroachment at Mominpura. We have given the work to MahaRail and this will benefit everyone because directly from Mominpura you can connect to Kamptee Road." About the Pachpaoli flyover, Gadkari said, "For the flyover from Kamal Talkies, we are using the latest technology from Malayasia for construction. At Kamal Chowk, we will build a huge market where all vendors will get space." He added that a lot of flyovers have been built or approved for Nagpur, which will ultimately provide succour for traffic movement. In East Nagpur, which has got many flyover projects, Gadkari joked that there is now no space remaining. "MLA Krishna Khopde has got so many projects approved that no space is left vacant. I told him that only a 2m wide lane remains in one of the localities, and maybe we should construct one flyover here too," said Gadkari. Siddaramaiah flags ‘stark imbalance in returns', seeks higher central tax pool share
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday met the 16th Finance Commission in Delhi and is learnt to have 'highlighted a stark imbalance in fiscal returns', telling the Commission that 'for every rupee Karnataka contributes to Union taxes, it receives only 15 paise in return'. A statement issued after the meeting by the CM's office said that Siddaramaiah 'pointed out that the reduction in Karnataka's share under the 15th Finance Commission from 4.713% to 3.647% resulted in a cumulative loss of over Rs 80,000 crore during the award period'. The overall share allocated to all states from central taxes was reduced to 41% for 2021-26, as against 42% in the previous cycle, primarily due to the creation of Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Siddaramaiah demanded a larger allocation for the state from the central tax pool for the five-year period beginning April 1, 2026. According to the statement, Karnataka 'proposed that the share of taxes devolved to states (vertical devolution) be increased to at least 50% (from April 1, 2026), and that cesses and surcharges be capped at 5%'. 'The state also recommended including Union non-tax revenues in the divisible pool.' 'For sharing funds among states (horizontal devolution), Karnataka suggested that each state retain about 60% of what it contributes, with 40% going to less-developed states, ensuring both growth and equity,' it said. Siddaramaiah told the Commission that 'to make the formula fairer, Karnataka has proposed reducing the weight of the income-distance criterion and giving more weight to a state's economic contribution, so that high-performing states are not penalised, but encouraged,' said the statement. The state also called for 'critical reforms' to make the fiscal devolution system 'more growth-oriented, predictable, and fair' and highlighted three 'key issues' — the growing disparities in per capita devolution; the flawed design of revenue deficit grants, and the unpredictable nature of state-specific grants. During the meeting, the CM told the Commission that the state recommends replacing discretionary special grants with a formula-based allocation of 0.3% of Gross Union Receipts. The CM also sought support for Rs 1.15 lakh crore investment to strengthen Bengaluru's infrastructure, given its major role in Karnataka's economy, said the statement.
