CHENNAI: In a targeted operation against the illegal transportation of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice,
Railway Protection Force
(
RPF
) personnel seized approximately 2,000 kilograms of smuggled rice at Chennai Egmore Railway Station on Saturday evening.
The special drive was conducted on May 25, between 5 pm and 6.30 pm, by a team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Joseph Amala Dass along with Head Constables G Kannan, V Kumaravel, and N Rajesh under the Chennai Egmore RPF division.
During the operation, the team identified and confiscated 40 unclaimed bags filled with smuggled PDS rice, weighing around two metric tonnes.
The rice bags, suspected to have been illegally diverted from the govt-subsidised distribution network, were found abandoned on the railway premises.
Authorities suspect that the smugglers intended to transport the rice using the railway network before abandoning the consignment fearing police surveillance.
The seized goods were handed over to Head Constable Velmurugan of the Chennai South Civil Supplies CID for further investigation and legal action.
Police officials stated that efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the rice and identify individuals involved in the smuggling operation. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has increased vigilance at key transit points to prevent further misuse of the railway system for illegal transport of essential commodities.

146 killed in seven years from falls off moving trains in Madurai division in Tamil Nadu
MADURAI: In the wake of the video of a woman dancing on the footboard of a speeding train in Nagercoil making its rounds on social media, the Southern Railway in its reply to an RTI query filed by TNIE has stated that 146 people died in accidental falls from moving trains in Madurai division in the last seven years. Recently, a social media influencer, Shakela Banu from Nagercoil, made a reel while dancing to a song from the footboard of a moving train. She was widely criticised for the dangerous act and a case has been registered against her. In the aftermath of the incident, TNIE filed an RTI query to the Divisional Security Commissioner of RPF Madurai. In reply stated that they did not have data from 2015 to 2018. However, they reported 26 deaths in 2019, 11 in 2020, 9 in 2021, 17 in 2022, 38 in 2023, 37 in 2024, and 8 in 2025 (till April), totalling to 146 deaths over the years due to accidents caused on moving trains. The Madurai division covers twelve districts in the state and one district in Kerala. An RPF officer said that accidental falls are avoidable deaths in trains. Notably, not all recorded accidental falls are caused by stunts. The railways have provided awareness and instructions to allow passengers to travel safely. In 2023-24, railway police have registered 21 cases for footboard travel and imposed a penalty of Rs 8,700, whereas in 2024-25, it rose to 148 cases for the same and collected Rs 56,900 as a penalty. 'Eight cases were registered in April and six cases in May 2025,' police added. Speaking to TNIE, DRM Madurai Sharad Srivastava said both RPF and ticket checking staff have been asked to do more drives against footboard travel. Action will be taken against those who are involved in photography/videography without permission, he said.

Trichy: As many as 39 cases of boom barrier (railway gates) damages and other violations were booked and 1.2 lakh was collected from violators between Jan and May 2025 by the Trichy railway division. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) observed on Thursday to raise awareness on the importance of safety at railway level crossings, M S Anbalagan, divisional railway Manager (DRM) informed that the division maintains 493 level crossing gates. Emphasizing growing concern over gate rule violations, he said that 90 cases were booked last year (Jan–Dec 2024), and 11 lakh were collected as penalties. He stated that reckless behaviour by road users not only damages railway property but hampers train's punctuality and endangers human lives. To mitigate such risks, cautionary and statutory signboards were installed to advise road users to strictly adhere to safety norms while crossing the railway tracks. The DRM underlined the ongoing efforts to enhance safety through the rationalization of level crossings by constructing limited use subways (LUS), road under bridges (RUBs), and road over bridges (ROBs) in collaboration with the state govt. Anbalagan and other senior officers flagged off a mass awareness rally and the safety publicity mobile vehicle in front of Trichy Junction railway station. The rally proceeded through Central bus terminus. The team distributed safety pamphlets and educated the public on level crossing safety. Later, a vehicle bearing safety awareness banners, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) visited level crossing gates near Trichy Town, Srirangam, and Thiruverumbur railway stations.

Andhra's U-turn on Appealing Tuni Arson Verdict Spotlights Clout of Kapu Community
New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh government has quickly reversed its decision to appeal the 2023 acquittal of 41 people in the 2016 Tuni train arson case. This sudden reversal, made within 24 hours, throws into sharp relief the political sensitivity surrounding the Kapu community. Events began Monday (June 2), when the Home (Courts-B) Department issued a government order (G.O. Rt. No. 852). The order directed the public prosecutor at the Andhra Pradesh high court to appeal the May 1, 2023 judgment of Vijayawada's VII Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court for Railways. That judgment had acquitted all accused in the Tuni arson case. By Tuesday, however, another order, G.O. Rt. No. 869, formally withdrew the earlier directive. The public prosecutor was instructed not to proceed with the appeal. The initial G.O. reportedly prompted concern among political leaders. Deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan, president of the Jana Sena Party (JSP) and a prominent Kapu leader, was reportedly displeased by the move to reopen a case affecting Kapu sentiments. The decision to withdraw the G.O. drew public statements from Kapu community representatives. Chinamilli Venkatarayudu, Kapunadu West Godavari district president, was quoted by South First saying the initial move was intended to 'persecute the Kapus'. Bandi Srinivasa Rao, a Kapu Ikya Vedika leader from Eluru district, reportedly called the initial decision 'vendetta politics', adding that the government had 'hurt the feelings of the Kapus'. The Tuni incident, central to these government orders, occurred on January 31, 2016. During a 'Kapu garjana ' ('roar of Kapus') rally in Tuni in East Godavari district, led by former minister Mudragada Padmanabham, to demand OBC status for the Kapu community, protesters allegedly stormed the Tuni railway station. Four coaches of the Ratnachal Express were set on fire and other public property was damaged. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) later filed cases against 41 individuals, including Padmanabham (accused #1) and Dadisetti Raja (accused #3), then a Kapu leader and now Tuni MLA, under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Railways Act. On May 1, 2023, the Vijayawada railway court acquitted all 41 accused, citing insufficient evidence and procedural lapses in the investigation. The court also ordered disciplinary action against three RPF officials for a flawed investigation. The Wire has reached out to Padmanabham. We shall update the copy once he responds. Why is the Kapu community politically so important? The Kapu community forms an estimated 15-17% of Andhra Pradesh's population, concentrated in coastal districts, particularly East and West Godavari. This demographic strength translates into considerable electoral influence. For decades, some Kapus have persistently demanded inclusion in the OBC list, similar to agitations by Jats, Marathas and Patels elsewhere in India. This demand often accompanies a sense of historical underrepresentation in political power compared to the Kamma and Reddy communities, which respectively provide much of the leadership and support for the Telugu Desam Party and the YSR Congress Party. Kapu community leaders assert large population figures to bolster these claims for political power and resources. Historical analyses show various cultivating sub-groups (Munnurukapus, Balijas, Telagas) consolidated under the broader 'Kapu' identity, a term originally meaning cultivator. Pressures from the post-liberalisation economy also intensify these socio-political dynamics and demands. There have been previous attempts to politically mobilise the Kapu community. In 2009, Chiranjeevi, a popular Telugu actor and Pawan Kalyan's elder brother, launched the Praja Rajyam Party. Stating 'social justice' as its motto, it won about 18% of the vote and around 20 assembly seats. However, the party was merged into the Congress immediately after the elections. Pawan Kalyan, himself a major film star, began his political journey in 2014, initially backing the National Democratic Alliance. He later distanced himself, aligning with Left parties and the Bahujan Samaj Party for the 2019 elections, before later embracing a more pronounced Hindutva stance.
