And Semenyo, 25, emerged as a target after Tottenham also put Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo on their shortlist.
The Bees' French forward netted 20 Premier League goals last term.
But despite the opportunity to reunite with Frank in north London, Mbeumo reportedly favours a £60m move to Manchester United.
Semenyo then became the clear alternative after also proving himself to be a goal menace when cutting inside on his left foot.

MARC MY WORDS Guehi makes summer transfer decision between Arsenal and Liverpool
The Athletic claims Tottenham even went so far as to contact Bournemouth over a move for their Ghanaian winger, who netted 13 goals and bagged seven assists in 42 games this term.
However, the Cherries have already seen their squad ravaged by big sides this summer.
Dean Huijsen joined Real Madrid for £50million last month, while fellow defender Illya Zabarnyi could be off to Paris Saint-Germain for around £60m.
Milos Kerkez has also agreed a £40m switch to Premier League champs Liverpool.

And with forwards always carrying a premium, it's claimed that Bournemouth told Tottenham to pay £70m for Semenyo.
The mind-blowing fee was immediately rebuffed Spurs, who have decided to not pursue a deal for now.
Daniel Levy reveals he wants Tottenham to win Champions League AND Premier League under 'super' Thomas Frank
They will continue to scour the market for a new right-sided forward at a better price.
But should Tottenham fail to secure an alternative, they could come back for Semenyo later in the transfer window.
The former Bristol City and Sunderland man still has four years to run on his Cherries contract.
And Semenyo is also on the shortlist at Man United, who could move should they end up losing Mbeumo to Spurs.

Marc Guehi 'prepared to see out Crystal Palace contract' amid interest from Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle
is said to be willing to bide his time at Crystal Palace despite widespread interest in his signature from elsewhere. Guehi was courted by Newcastle United last summer but Palace rejected an offer worth around £50million, before Tottenham Hotspur failed with a bid in January. Both Newcastle and Spurs remain keen on the 24-year-old centre back, while Liverpool are also now listed among his admirers. But according to The Guardian, Guehi is prepared to see out his Palace contract, which is due to expire at the end of June 2026. That might not suit the decision makers at Selhurst Park, though, as it would likely mean losing their star man on a free transfer. Guehi — who has been capped 23 times by England and is expected to play a crucial role at next year's World Cup — featured in 35 of Palace's 38 Premier League matches last season. The former Chelsea academy star also played in all six of Palace's games in their triumphant FA Cup campaign, including the 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final. Liverpool's interest may intensify following the expected departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. But Guehi is among several defenders being monitored by the Reds. Meanwhile, Tottenham's need for a new centre back could hinge on whether Cristian Romero stays or leaves this summer. It is no secret that the Argentina star is wanted by Atletico Madrid.

Benjamin Nygren signs for Celtic as bargain transfer fee, contract details and stunning scouting report emerge
Celtic are set to snap up the Sweden international in a cut-price deal but could be quids in further down the line according to Marc Rieper. Benjamin Nygren has been hailed as the 'full package' after sealing an initial £1.3m move to Celtic on a four-year deal with an option until 2030. The winger has agreed a cut-price movefrom Danish side Nordsjaelland, with official confirmation expected in the coming days, as Brendan Rodgers beefs up his attacking options. And according to former Hoops hero Marc Rieper the Parkhead club are getting top class talent who will coin in a massive profit further down the line. Nygren netted 16 goals across all competitions last season and his form didn't go unnoticed back home, earning him a first senior call-up under Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson in March. He has since won four caps and scored twice for his country. Now the 23-year-old, currently on holiday, looks set to complete his move to Parkhead and have a first crack at the Champions League after snubbing interest from Anderlecht, Copenhagen and the MLS. And Denmark legend Rieper told Mail Sport: 'I've seen Nygren a number of times. He is the full package. A really good player. 'He has tremendous speed, good passing ability and is a really, really good finisher - and from long range. 'When you play for Nordsjaelland you need to be able to keep the ball and he is really good in that sense. 'Celtic have got a really good player in Nygren. He is top class.' Nygren was one of the Danish Sperliga's most effective attacking threats over the last two seasons and had interest from across Europe a year ago. With just six months left on his contract at Nordsjaelland the Danes have accepted the knockdown fee rather than lose the player for nothing in December. But Rieper expects Celtic will make a huge profit on Nygren further down the line - with the former defender tipping him to be the latest star to become a £10m-plus player at Parkhead. He said: 'If you do well at Celtic and in Europe then you are very easily a £10million-plus player. 'The way prices are going in Italy, Germany and the Premier League then £10million - as ridiculous as it is to say - is not even a big number any more. 'Look at Matt O'Riley, he's on the verge of leaving Brighton for crazy money as well. I think they will make a good profit on Nygren one day. 'He is a young player and he has got really good ability. But they can look forward to enjoying him in a Celtic shirt for the next few years first.'
